How to Beat Poison-Type Pokémon

Poison-type Pokémon are weak to Ground and Psychic-type attacks, taking double damage from both. They resist Fighting, Poison, Bug, Grass, and Fairy-type moves. Steel-type Pokémon are completely immune to Poison-type attacks and the poisoned status condition.

In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, as well as the upcoming Legends: Z-A, countering Poison relies on exploiting its narrow defensive gaps. Ground-type moves like Earthquake provide the most reliable physical damage output. Psychic-type attacks offer excellent special damage, bypassing the high physical bulk common among Poison-types.

Steel-types are the ultimate defensive answer. They take zero damage from Poison-type attacks and cannot be afflicted by the poisoned status condition. Switching a Steel-type into a predicted Sludge Bomb forces the opponent to lose momentum entirely.

Status prevention is crucial during in-game playthroughs. Equipping Heavy-Duty Boots on your lead or pivot Pokémon nullifies the threat of Toxic Spikes upon entering the field. Alternatively, switching a grounded Poison-type of your own absorbs and removes Toxic Spikes instantly.

Poison is an offensively narrow typing. It only hits Grass and Fairy-types for super effective damage. You bring a Poison-type attacker specifically to check Fairy-types, which otherwise dominate many late-game boss battles.

Using Poison-type moves against Steel-types results in zero damage. Ground, Rock, Ghost, and other Poison-types resist Poison attacks, making it a poor choice for sweeping teams. Its true value lies in utility rather than raw damage output.

Moves like Toxic and Toxic Spikes define the typing's offensive pressure. Inflicting the badly poisoned status breaks down high-HP targets that resist direct damage. Venoshock synergizes perfectly with these status effects by doubling its base power against poisoned targets.

Secondary typings drastically alter how you approach beating a Poison-type. Certain combinations neutralize standard weaknesses or introduce new immunities.

• Poison/Dark: The Dark typing grants immunity to Psychic attacks, removing a core weakness. Rely exclusively on Ground-type moves to deal super effective damage.
• Poison/Flying: Flying provides an immunity to Ground-type attacks. You must pivot to Psychic, Electric, Ice, or Rock-type moves to secure knockouts.
• Poison/Water: This combination loses the weakness to Ground but gains weaknesses to Electric. Grass-type moves remain neutral due to the Poison typing.

Always check the secondary typing before locking in an attack. A mispredicted Earthquake against a levitating or Flying-type Poison Pokémon wastes a valuable turn.

Building a team to handle Poison-types requires minimal but specific investment. Every in-game team needs at least one strong Ground-type attacker. Ground provides excellent neutral coverage alongside its ability to crush Poison-types.

Psychic-types act as dedicated special attackers but often lack physical defense. Pair your Psychic-type with a bulky Steel-type to absorb physical Poison jabs and pivot safely. This core handles almost any Poison-type threat in the story.

Keep Pecha Berries or Full Heals stocked during your playthrough. Even when you resist the damage, moves like Poison Fang or Sludge Wave carry high secondary chances to inflict status. Curing poison immediately prevents chip damage from ruining your offensive momentum.
