How to Evolve Amaura

To evolve Amaura into Aurorus, you must raise it to level 39 or higher exclusively during nighttime in your specific game. If you reach level 39 during the day, the evolution will fail. You can trigger the evolution using battle experience, EXP Candies, or a Rare Candy once the sun sets.

Amaura evolves into Aurorus, a Rock/Ice type. Defensively, this is one of the worst typings in the franchise due to massive double weaknesses to Fighting and Steel attacks. A single Mach Punch or Bullet Punch will easily knock it out. Because of its low speed and terrible defensive typing, Aurorus is completely unviable in serious competitive formats.

However, for a standard story playthrough, Aurorus is highly effective and fun to use. Its signature ability, Refrigerate, converts Normal-type attacks into Ice-type attacks and grants them a power boost. This makes accessible moves like Return, Body Slam, or Hyper Voice devastating against in-game NPC trainers. It is a fantastic glass cannon for casual runs.

As a Kalos native, the Sail Fossil Pokémon is highly relevant for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Evolving it requires paying attention to the dynamic time-of-day system within Lumiose City. Unlike older games tied to your console's clock, Legends titles use an internal real-time cycle that shifts as you play.

1. Obtain Amaura by restoring the Sail Fossil.
2. Progress the in-game time to night by resting at a base camp or waiting in the overworld.
3. Ensure the sky is completely dark and the night theme music is playing.
4. Level Amaura up to 39 or higher using battle experience or an EXP Candy.

Evolving Amaura in Pokémon GO ignores levels entirely but strictly enforces real-world time. The game uses your phone's GPS and local time zone to determine day and night. You cannot trick the app by changing your phone's time settings.

1. Accumulate 50 Amaura Candy through catching, hatching 7km eggs, or walking it as your Buddy.
2. Open the app after sunset in your physical location.
3. Check the overworld map to confirm the dark night visual is active.
4. Navigate to Amaura's summary screen.
5. Verify the moon icon next to the Evolve button has a green checkmark, then tap Evolve.

In the Galar region, Amaura is available via The Crown Tundra expansion. The evolution relies on the Nintendo Switch system clock, which dictates the time of day in the Wild Area. Nighttime in Galar runs strictly from 8:00 PM to 5:59 AM local time.

1. Place Amaura in your active party.
2. Verify your Switch system clock is set past 8:00 PM.
3. Travel to the Wild Area or Crown Tundra where time flows naturally.
4. Feed Amaura a Rare Candy to hit level 39.

You can manually change your Switch system clock to force it to be 8:00 PM. Keep in mind that altering the system clock will lock daily time-based events in Sword and Shield for 24 hours.

Do not waste time looking for Amaura in Paldea, Kitakami, or the Terarium. The Amaura line is completely absent from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. The developers did not include its data in the Generation 9 code.

If you have an Amaura in Pokémon HOME, you cannot transfer it into these games. You must keep it in HOME, move it to Sword and Shield, or wait for future compatible titles.

The most common issue is a mismatch between real-world time and in-game time. In games like Sword and Shield, the time of day on standard routes is locked to the story progression until you become the Champion. If you are on Route 3 and the story dictates it is daytime, your 9:00 PM real-world clock does not matter. Always evolve time-based Pokémon in the Wild Area to bypass story locks.

Another frequent blocker is the Everstone. If you gave Amaura this item to pass down a Nature during breeding, you must remove it before leveling up. The Everstone hard-stops all level-based evolutions.

Finally, leveling up via passive methods like the Pokémon Nursery or Poké Pelago will never trigger an evolution. The level-up must happen while the Pokémon is in your active party or PC boxes depending on the specific game's EXP share mechanics.
