Is Azelf Good?

Azelf is highly situational in Scarlet and Violet competitive play, currently sitting in the RU tier. It excels exclusively as a dedicated suicide lead or fast special sweeper on Hyper Offense teams. Its complete lack of bulk makes it a poor choice for defensive or balanced rosters.

Azelf trades all durability for pure speed and utility, making it a mandatory staple for specific offensive builds but a liability everywhere else.

Azelf currently occupies the SV RU tier with a steady 3.0% usage rate. Its stat distribution dictates a very specific, unforgiving playstyle: hit fast, disrupt the opponent, and faint on your own terms.

You will almost exclusively see it deployed as a suicide lead on Hyper Offense teams. Its primary job is to dictate the pace of the match from turn one, ensuring hazards are on the field while preventing the opponent from doing the same.

Alternatively, players use it as a late-game special sweeper. However, its complete lack of defensive bulk means it cannot pivot into attacks. It must enter the field cleanly after a teammate faints to have any chance of setting up.

The most effective way to play Azelf is to embrace its frailty. Equipping a Focus Sash is mandatory for the lead slot, guaranteeing it survives at least one catastrophic hit to do its job.

Moveset Breakdown

• Stealth Rock: Essential for breaking opponent Focus Sashes and punishing switches throughout the match.
• Taunt: Shuts down slower hazard setters and completely blocks Defog attempts.
• Knock Off: Removes crucial items from defensive switch-ins, crippling them for the rest of the game.
• Explosion: The ultimate momentum generator. Once hazards are up, Azelf sacrifices itself to deal massive damage and bring in a setup sweeper safely.

This combination ensures that even if Azelf goes down on turn two, your team maintains absolute offensive pressure and tempo.

While the lead set is standard, Azelf can function as a dangerous wallbreaker using Nasty Plot. A single boost turns its already high Special Attack into a massive threat that can punch holes in unprepared RU teams.

For this role, equip a Life Orb for maximum damage output, or Wise Glasses for a slight boost without the recoil. The moveset relies heavily on Psychic for reliable STAB damage. Flamethrower provides essential coverage against Steel-types that resist Psychic.

You can also run Skill Swap to disrupt ability-reliant walls, stripping them of their defensive tools. A Choice Scarf set is a viable alternative to outspeed and revenge-kill faster threats, though locking Azelf into a single move requires precise prediction.

Azelf cannot win games alone. It requires teammates that thrive on the momentum and entry hazards it provides in the early game.

• Mimikyu and Maushold: Both appreciate Stealth Rock breaking sturdy abilities and sashes, allowing them to sweep cleanly with their own setup moves.
• Entei and Krookodile: These physical attackers capitalize on the holes Azelf punches in the opposing team. Krookodile specifically benefits from Azelf's Levitate ability, creating safe switch-in opportunities on predicted Ground-type attacks.
• Yanmega: A devastating special attacker that enjoys Azelf removing special walls with Explosion or crippling them with Knock Off.

Building around Azelf means committing entirely to offensive pressure. If you lose momentum after Azelf faints, its sacrifice is entirely wasted.

Azelf's paper-thin defenses are a massive liability. Any neutral hit from a strong RU attacker will trigger its Focus Sash or outright knock it out.

Kleavor stands out as a premier counter. It easily threatens Azelf with its Bug-type attacks and can set up its own hazards while ignoring Azelf's Taunt if it attacks directly. Dark-type attackers also pose a significant threat, though some Azelf sets run a Colbur Berry specifically to survive a single Dark-type hit and retaliate or set up Stealth Rock.

Furthermore, faster Choice Scarf users and strong priority attackers completely bypass Azelf's Speed advantage, rendering it useless before it can even click Taunt.

Do not draft Azelf if you are playing a bulky offense, balance, or stall team. These archetypes require Pokemon that can take hits, pivot repeatedly, and stick around for long, drawn-out matches.

Azelf offers zero defensive utility outside of its Ground immunity via Levitate. If you need a bulky Psychic-type pivot, you must look toward alternatives that can actually survive a hit and provide slow momentum.

While Azelf is perfectly fine for casual in-game playthroughs due to its high stats, in competitive ranked play, it is strictly a niche tool for Hyper Offense players who are comfortable playing aggressively.
