Is Rhyhorn Good?

Rhyhorn is highly situational in competitive play, sitting at a 0.3% usage rate in the Scarlet/Violet LC tier. While it boasts massive physical bulk and Attack, its abysmal Special Defense and double weaknesses to Water and Grass make it a liability without Eviolite and heavy team support.

Rhyhorn hits like a truck on the physical side but crumbles instantly against any competent special attacker.

Strengths

• Exceptional physical Defense and Attack for a first-stage evolution.
• Eviolite synergy turns it into an immovable physical wall.

• Lightning Rod ability provides a crucial immunity to Electric-type attacks.

Weaknesses

• Non-existent Special Defense makes it bait for almost any special attacker.
• Crippling 4x weaknesses to common Water and Grass-type moves.
• Painfully slow base Speed requires Rock Polish to outspeed threats.
• Extremely dependent on Eviolite, making it highly vulnerable to Knock Off.

In the current Scarlet and Violet Little Cup (LC) format, Rhyhorn holds a niche position with a 0.3% usage rate. It functions exclusively as a physical tank or a setup sweeper. Its stat distribution heavily favors physical engagements, allowing it to shrug off unboosted physical hits with ease.

When equipped with an Eviolite, Rhyhorn achieves absurd physical bulk for a first-stage evolution. This allows it to comfortably switch into physical attackers, force them out, and create a window for setup.

However, its role is strictly limited by its Special Defense. Rhyhorn cannot operate as a mixed wall. You must position it carefully against purely physical threats to gain any momentum, as even resisted special hits leave a massive dent.

To extract any real value from Rhyhorn in PvP, the Double Dance set is mandatory. This build leverages its natural physical bulk to set up both Speed and Attack boosts. While Assault Vest and Leftovers are options, Eviolite remains the most consistent item for survival.

Here is the standard setup for Scarlet and Violet LC:

• Item: Eviolite (mandatory for setup) or Life Orb (for immediate wall-breaking).
• Ability: Lightning Rod (for Electric immunity) or Rock Head.
• Core Moves: Rock Polish and Swords Dance.
• Offensive Moves: Earthquake and Rock Blast (or Stone Edge).

Rock Polish is non-negotiable. Without it, Rhyhorn remains too slow to sweep, even after a Swords Dance. You must find a physical attacker to set up on, use Rock Polish first, and then attempt to sweep.

Earthquake provides reliable, high-damage STAB. Rock Blast breaks Focus Sashes, while Stone Edge offers raw stopping power. Supercell Slam and Ice Fang can be slotted in if your team desperately needs specific coverage, but you sacrifice setup potential. The Reckless ability exists, but Rhyhorn lacks the optimal recoil moves to abuse it effectively in this format.

Rhyhorn cannot function in a vacuum. It requires dedicated teammates to cover its glaring special vulnerabilities and provide safe entry points. Impidimp is arguably its best partner in the LC tier. Impidimp sets up dual screens, artificially patching Rhyhorn's Special Defense and guaranteeing a safer Swords Dance or Rock Polish.

Other essential synergies include:

• Stunky: Absorbs Grass-type attacks and provides crucial offensive pressure against special walls.
• Greavard: Acts as a spin-blocker and physical deterrent, complementing Rhyhorn's defensive profile.
• Wattrel: Offers an immunity to Ground-type moves and threatens the Water-types that force Rhyhorn out.
• Minccino: Provides fast, multi-hit utility to break through Focus Sashes before Rhyhorn attempts a sweep.

With Lightning Rod equipped, Rhyhorn can pivot into Electric-type attacks aimed at Wattrel, creating a solid defensive loop. While the Special Attack boost from Lightning Rod is useless, the free turn grants a perfect window to use Rock Polish.

Rhyhorn's Special Defense is practically non-existent. Any decently powered special attack will OHKO it, regardless of Eviolite. Its Rock/Ground typing is a double-edged sword, providing excellent physical STAB but leaving Rhyhorn with crippling 4x weaknesses to Water and Grass-type moves.

Even non-STAB coverage moves of these types will instantly remove Rhyhorn from the field. Furthermore, it is incredibly vulnerable to priority moves from Fighting-types or Water-types, which bypass its Rock Polish speed boosts entirely.

In the LC tier, Knock Off is ubiquitous. If Rhyhorn loses its Eviolite, its defensive utility vanishes entirely. Weakness Policy builds exist to punish super-effective hits, but they are highly inconsistent gimmicks compared to the Eviolite standard.

Do not draft Rhyhorn if your team lacks a dedicated special sponge. If you cannot pivot out of special attackers safely, Rhyhorn becomes dead weight. It is also a poor choice if the opposing team is heavy on priority users, as a fast sweep is useless if a priority Water-type attack connects first.

For main story playthroughs in Scarlet/Violet or the upcoming Legends Z-A, Rhyhorn is perfectly fine as a physical bruiser. But for serious competitive LC formats, avoid it if you cannot provide heavy team support.

If you need a physical attacker that does not instantly die to special moves, draft Stunky instead for your core. If you are playing outside of the LC format, abandon Rhyhorn entirely and evolve it into Rhydon to access higher stats and the Eviolite benefits in higher tiers.
