Standard Trade Evolution Mechanics
Boldore evolves into
Gigalith via a standard trade. You must exchange
Boldore with another player locally or online. The evolution animation triggers on the receiving player's screen immediately after the trade sequence completes.
No specific level, friendship threshold, or held item is required to initiate this process. A
Boldore can evolve at level 25 right after evolving from
Roggenrola, provided you have a trading partner.
If
Boldore holds an Everstone during the transfer, the evolution cancels automatically. Ensure the held item slot is empty or holds a different item before initiating the trade. The receiving player will otherwise be stuck with an unevolved
Boldore.
The Linking Cord Exception (Legends: Arceus)
Pokémon Legends:
Arceus removes multiplayer trade requirements for trade-evolution Pokémon. Players instead use a Linking Cord item directly on
Boldore from the satchel to trigger the evolution into
Gigalith.
Linking Cords can be purchased at the Trading Post in Jubilife Village for 1,000 Merit Points. They also drop randomly in space-time distortions or as rewards for specific requests, such as Request 64: Getting to Know Ghosts.
Using the item consumes it permanently. The evolution occurs immediately in the overworld, bypassing the traditional trade screen entirely.
Competitive Verdict: Gigalith (6.5/10)
Gigalith serves as a dedicated physical wall and weather setter in lower competitive tiers. Its primary competitive value stems from the Sand Stream ability, which summons a sandstorm for five turns upon entering the field.
This weather condition passively boosts Rock-type Pokémon's Special Defense by 50%. This mechanic patches up
Gigalith's base 80 Special Defense, turning it into a highly effective mixed tank. Competitive Rating: 6.5/10.
Gigalith fits best on Trick Room teams or dedicated Sand offense builds. Players looking for a fast sweeper or a flexible pivot will find
Gigalith detrimental due to its abysmal base 25 Speed and easily exploitable defensive typing.
Pros, Cons, and Team Synergy
Gigalith competes directly with
Tyranitar and
Hippowdon for the Sand Setter role. It lacks
Tyranitar's offensive dual-typing and
Hippowdon's reliable HP recovery via Slack Off.
- Pros: Massive base 135 Attack, base 130 Defense, and access to Stealth Rock. Explosion provides a high-damage exit strategy to bring in Sand Rush sweepers safely.
- Cons: Pure Rock typing leaves it vulnerable to common Ground, Fighting, Water, Grass, and Steel attacks. Zero reliable recovery forces total reliance on Leftovers or Rest.
Ideal teammates include Sand Rush abusers like
Excadrill or
Stoutland, which double their speed in the sand. Flying-types like
Corviknight or
Mandibuzz provide perfect defensive synergy by absorbing the Ground, Grass, and Fighting attacks aimed at
Gigalith.
Optimal Movesets and EV Allocation
A standard utility set maximizes
Gigalith's longevity and entry hazard control. Allocate 252 EVs to HP and 252 EVs to Special Defense with a Careful nature.
This specific spread maximizes the 50% Special Defense boost from Sand Stream. The mandatory moveset includes Stealth Rock, Rock Blast or Stone Edge, Earthquake, and Toxic to wear down opposing walls.
For Trick Room teams, switch to a Brave nature with 0 Speed IVs. Maximize Attack (252 EVs) and HP (252 EVs). Equip a Choice Band or Life Orb and run Stone Edge, Earthquake, Heavy Slam, and Superpower to function as a slow, immediate wallbreaker.
Ability Tracking: Sturdy vs. Sand Stream
Players must check
Boldore's ability before trading to ensure the resulting
Gigalith fits their team. A
Boldore with the Weak Armor ability evolves into a
Gigalith with Sand Stream.
Conversely, a
Boldore with Sturdy retains Sturdy upon evolution. Sturdy guarantees survival against any single attack from full HP, ensuring Stealth Rock goes up successfully against aggressive leads.
Sand Stream is mandatory for weather teams, while Sturdy is better suited for suicide-lead sets in hyper-offense builds. Hidden Ability
Boldore (Sand Force) evolves into Sand Force
Gigalith, which is generally outclassed by Sand Stream.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you evolve Boldore without trading?
In most mainline games, trading is strictly required. However, in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, you can evolve Boldore without trading by applying a Linking Cord item directly from your satchel.
What level does Boldore evolve?
Boldore has no level requirement for evolution. It can evolve at level 25 immediately after evolving from Roggenrola, provided it is traded to another player.
Does an Everstone prevent trade evolution?
Yes. If Boldore holds an Everstone during a trade, the evolution process cancels. The receiving player will get a Boldore, not a Gigalith.
Which Boldore ability turns into Sand Stream?
A Boldore with the Weak Armor ability will evolve into a Gigalith with Sand Stream. If Boldore has Sturdy, it will remain Sturdy after evolving.
