Dratini (In-Game & PvP)
Dratini is highly situational for story playthroughs and entirely unviable for competitive PvP. As a base-stage Dragon-type, it requires massive EXP investment and babysitting to reach its final form. While its Dragon resistances help in early routes, its low base stats make it dead weight in late-game scenarios without Eviolite.
Verdict
You carry
Dratini purely for the

Tier & Role: A Playthrough Investment
Dratini holds no tier in standard Smogon Scarlet/Violet competitive play. Its base stats are simply too low to function as a sweeper, wall, or pivot in any serious PvP environment. You will never see
Dratini in VGC or high-ladder singles.
In a standard story playthrough, its role is strictly an 'EXP sponge'. You place it in your party to passively absorb experience through the modern EXP Share mechanics. It acts as a delayed-gratification investment.
If you force
Dratini onto the active field, its only viable role is a frail setup sweeper. Relying on Dragon Dance to boost its mediocre Attack and Speed is mandatory if you want it to secure KOs against Gym Leaders or Team Star bosses.
Best Uses & Matchups
Dratini shines brightest in the early-to-mid game when facing opponents that rely on elemental starter types. Its inherent Dragon typing grants it resistances to Fire, Water, Grass, and Electric attacks.
This makes
Dratini a safe switch-in against early Gym Leaders like Kofu or Brassius in Scarlet and Violet. It can absorb a resisted hit, set up a Dragon Dance, and retaliate. Shed Skin adds massive value here, giving it a 33% chance each turn to wake up from Spore or cure a Thunder Wave paralysis.
The Mirror Herb Advantage
In Generation 9,
Dratini benefits heavily from the Mirror Herb picnic mechanic. You can teach it Extreme Speed immediately by setting up a picnic with a compatible Pokémon, bypassing the need to wait for its evolution.
- Favorable Matchups: Early-game Water and Grass types with low physical defense.
- Status Absorber: Excellent for pivoting into predictable Will-O-Wisp or Thunder Wave users thanks to Shed Skin.
- Eviolite Tanking: With Eviolite equipped, it can survive neutral hits from mid-game trainers while setting up.
Honest Weaknesses: Why It Lags Behind
Dratini's biggest flaw is its pacing. Being in the 'Slow' experience group means it requires 1,250,000 EXP to reach level 100. During a normal playthrough,
Dratini will constantly fall behind your main team's levels, making it harder to justify using in active combat.
Its Base Stat Total of 300 is atrocious for mid-to-late game. Even with an Eviolite boosting its Defenses by 50%, a base 45 Defense and 50 Special Defense cannot withstand STAB attacks from fully evolved opponents. It gets OHKO'd by almost any physical Ice or Dragon move.
Fairy-types completely invalidate
Dratini. Pokémon like
Tinkaton or
Dachsbun in Paldea will wall its Dragon-type STAB moves and easily KO it before it can accumulate enough Dragon Dances to pose a threat with Normal-type coverage.
Avoid Dratini If... (And Better Alternatives)
Do not put
Dratini on your team if you want immediate offensive pressure. It requires constant babysitting and uses up your Eviolite slot, which is often better suited for naturally bulkier unevolved Pokémon like
Bisharp or
Primeape.
Avoid
Dratini entirely if you are playing a fast-paced Nuzlocke or a speedrun. The EXP requirement will stall your progression, and its frailty makes it highly susceptible to random critical hits before it reaches level 30 to become
Dragonair.
Superior Alternatives
Frigibax: The
Baxcalibur line offers much better immediate offensive presence in Scarlet and Violet. Its Ice/Dragon typing provides superior coverage, and Thermal Exchange prevents burns.
Gible: Ground/Dragon is a far better offensive typing for story modes.
Gible evolves into
Gabite at level 24, giving you a tangible power spike much earlier than
Dratini's level 30 requirement.
Pokémon GO Viability & Shadow Dratini
In Pokémon GO, standard
Dratini has zero viability in any PvP league, including the Little Cup, due to its squishy stats and lack of fast-charging pressure. Its sole purpose is to be farmed for
Dratini Candy and Candy XL.
However, Shadow
Dratini is a high-priority catch. While you still won't use the
Dratini itself, keeping a high-IV Shadow
Dratini to evolve during a Team GO Rocket takeover event is crucial. Shadow
Dragonite is a top-tier raider and a menace in the Master League.
Never purify a high-IV Shadow
Dratini. The 20% shadow damage bonus is mathematically superior for late-game PvE raiding compared to the minor stat bump from purification.
Preparation for Legends: Z-A
With Pokémon Legends: Z-A returning to Kalos,
Dratini's historical availability in that region (Route 21 in X/Y) suggests it will return. If the game retains the grit/effort level mechanics from Legends:
Arceus,
Dratini's early-game viability might slightly improve.
Grit items allow you to artificially inflate a base-stage Pokémon's stats early on. Pumping
Dratini's HP and Speed with grit items could mitigate its natural frailty, making the grind to
Dragonite much less punishing than in traditional mainline titles.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dratini
Is Dratini better than Gible in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?
Gible is significantly better for playthroughs. Gible's Ground/Dragon typing provides immunity to Electric attacks and excellent STAB coverage early on. Furthermore, Gible evolves at level 24, giving you an immediate mid-game power spike, whereas Dratini remains weak until level 30.
Should I evolve Dratini immediately?
Yes. There is absolutely no strategic benefit to keeping Dratini unevolved. Evolving it into Dragonair at level 30 provides a much-needed boost to its base stats. Delaying evolution only makes it harder to survive standard trainer battles.
What is the best ability for Dratini?
For story playthroughs, Shed Skin is the best ability. It grants a 33% chance to cure status conditions like paralysis or sleep at the end of each turn. Marvel Scale is its Hidden Ability, but it requires Dratini to be statused to boost Defense, which is too risky given its low HP.
Is Dratini good in Pokémon GO?
Dratini itself is useless in Pokémon GO battles. However, it is highly valuable as a source of Candy to power up Dragonite. If you catch a Shadow Dratini, keep it as a Shadow and evolve it for maximum raid DPS.
