Geodude (In-Game & Competitive)
Geodude is highly effective for early-game story playthroughs and Nuzlockes thanks to its massive physical Defense and the Sturdy ability. However, it is completely unviable in serious competitive PvP due to its abysmal Speed, terrible Special Defense, and crippling 4x weaknesses to Water and Grass types.
Verdict
Geodude dominates the early game with physical bulk and Sturdy, but its extreme weaknesses and trade-evolution requirement hold it back later.

Tier & Role: The Early-Game Wall
Geodude occupies a very specific niche: it is an absolute powerhouse for the first 25 to 30 levels of a playthrough, acting as a premier physical wall. Its base Defense is exceptionally high for an unevolved Pokémon, allowing it to easily absorb hits from early-route Normal, Flying, and Bug types.
In single-player modes,
Geodude functions primarily as a physical tank and Stealth Rock setter. Once you reach the mid-game, its role shifts toward being a slow, hard-hitting attacker that relies entirely on the Sturdy ability to survive long enough to launch an Earthquake or Rock Slide.
For competitive PvP,
Geodude does not exist on the radar. It lacks the stats, Speed, and defensive typing to survive in any serious format. Even in Little Cup (LC), there are better options with fewer exploitable weaknesses.
Recommended Playthrough Sets & Mechanics
The Standard Story Tank
When running
Geodude in Pokémon Scarlet/Violet (via the Teal Mask DLC) or preparing for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, your setup should maximize its physical presence while mitigating its terrible Speed.
- Ability: Sturdy (Mandatory. Rock Head is too niche, and Sand Veil requires setup).
- Item: Eviolite (if keeping as
Geodude/
Graveler) or Hard Stone. - Moves: Earthquake, Rock Blast / Stone Edge, Stealth Rock, Self-Destruct / Explosion.
- Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpA) or Impish (+Def, -SpA).
Sturdy is the cornerstone of this set. Because
Geodude is incredibly slow, it will almost always take a hit first. Sturdy ensures it survives a 4x effective Water or Grass attack with 1 HP, allowing you to retaliate with a massive Earthquake or set up Stealth Rock.
In Nuzlocke runs,
Geodude's access to Self-Destruct or Explosion gives it a secondary role as a panic button. If a boss fight spirals out of control, a Sturdy-backed Explosion can secure a crucial knockout, sacrificing
Geodude to save the rest of your team.
Best Uses & Matchups
Geodude excels in specific, predictable matchups where physical damage is the only threat. It completely walls early-game Electric types, taking zero damage from their STAB moves while threatening back with Ground-type attacks.
Against Flying and Bug types,
Geodude's Rock typing provides essential resistances. Gym leaders or boss fights that rely on these types struggle to break through its physical bulk. Moves like Rock Blast also break through Focus Sashes or Sturdy on opposing Pokémon.
In the context of Pokémon Legends mechanics (like
Arceus and the upcoming Z-A),
Geodude benefits greatly from Agile and Strong styles. Using an Agile style Rock Smash can sometimes manipulate turn order enough to compensate for its abysmal base Speed, letting you follow up with a Strong style Bulldoze.
Honest Weaknesses: Why It Falls Off
Geodude's typing is a double-edged sword. Rock/Ground gives it two crippling 4x weaknesses: Water and Grass. Any special attack of these types, even from an underleveled opponent, will trigger Sturdy or outright KO
Geodude if it has taken prior chip damage.
Its Special Defense is practically non-existent. Even neutral special attacks from mid-game opponents deal massive damage. You cannot leave
Geodude in against Psychic, Ghost, or Dark-type special attackers, as it will be reliably two-shot before it can act twice.
The evolution method is another major flaw.
Geodude evolves into
Graveler at level 25, which provides a decent stat bump, but reaching
Golem requires a trade. If you are playing a traditional mainline game without access to trading,
Graveler's stats simply cannot keep up with late-game opponents. Pokémon Legends games fix this with the Linking Cord item, but in standard playthroughs, this remains a hard cap on its viability.
Avoid If... & Better Alternatives
Do not use
Geodude if your team already has multiple slow Pokémon, or if you share compounding weaknesses to Water, Grass, or Fighting types. A team with
Geodude, a Fire starter, and a Dark type will struggle immensely against late-game Water or Fighting specialists.
If you are playing Pokémon Scarlet and Violet,
Nacli (and its evolution
Garganacl) is a strictly better alternative.
Nacli is pure Rock, removing the 4x weaknesses to Water and Grass. More importantly, its Purifying Salt ability makes it immune to status conditions and halves Ghost-type damage, making it a far superior and more reliable physical wall that fully evolves via leveling.
If you specifically need a Ground-type physical attacker,
Rhyhorn offers similar bulk with a better Attack stat, though it suffers from the same typing drawbacks. For a pure Ground option,
Mudbray provides excellent physical damage with the Stamina ability, completely outclassing
Geodude's defensive scaling.

Frequently Asked Questions About Geodude
Is Geodude better than Nacli in Scarlet and Violet?
No. Nacli and its final evolution Garganacl are vastly superior. Nacli is pure Rock, avoiding the 4x weaknesses to Water and Grass, and its Purifying Salt ability grants immunity to status conditions, making it a much better wall.
Should I keep Geodude unevolved with an Eviolite?
Only temporarily. While Eviolite boosts Geodude's Defense to massive levels, its base HP and Special Defense remain too low to survive late-game hits. You should evolve it to Graveler and eventually Golem for the permanent stat increases.
What is the best ability for Geodude?
Sturdy is the best ability. Because Geodude is very slow and has two 4x weaknesses, Sturdy guarantees it survives at least one hit from full HP, allowing you to heal or get off a crucial attack like Earthquake.
Can Geodude be used in competitive PvP?
No. Geodude is entirely unviable in serious competitive formats like VGC or Smogon singles. Its unevolved stats, terrible Speed, and extreme vulnerability to common special attackers make it a liability against human opponents.
