Is Golem Good?

No for high-tier PvP, but situationally decent in lower tiers and great for casual playthroughs. In Scarlet and Violet singles (ZU tier), Golem serves as a niche suicide lead. Its massive physical bulk and Sturdy ability guarantee setting up Stealth Rock, but devastating 4x weaknesses to Water and Grass ruin its viability in standard play.

Strengths

• Excellent physical bulk allows it to shrug off non-super-effective physical attacks.

• Fatal 4x weaknesses to common Water and Grass attacks.
• Abysmal Special Defense makes it instant bait for almost any special attacker.
• Extremely slow, meaning it will almost always take a hit before moving.

In the current competitive landscape of Scarlet and Violet, Golem finds itself relegated to the ZU tier. With a mere 1.5% usage rate, it is far from a meta staple.

Its primary role is that of a suicide lead or a slow, bulky physical wallbreaker. The combination of a massive physical defense stat and a naturally high attack stat looks incredible on paper.

However, modern competitive play is ruthless. Golem's abysmal speed and crippling special defense make it incredibly difficult to position safely without immediately losing momentum.

Guaranteed Hazards

If you are bringing Golem to a ranked singles match, the suicide lead set is your most reliable option. This build completely relies on the Sturdy ability.

Sturdy guarantees that Golem will survive any single attack from full HP. This ensures you can almost always set up Stealth Rock on your first turn.

Once knocked down to 1 HP, the Custap Berry activates. This gives Golem priority on its next turn, allowing it to fire off a devastating STAB attack or an Explosion before going down.

Alternatively, you can use Rock Tomb to lower the opponent's speed, making it much easier for your next Pokémon to secure a revenge kill.

Sweeping Potential

While the suicide lead is standard, Golem can attempt a sweeping role using Rock Polish. Doubling its speed allows it to outpace many unboosted threats.

For this setup, the Weakness Policy is a high-risk, high-reward item choice. If Golem takes a super-effective hit and survives via Sturdy, its offensive stats skyrocket.

A moveset of Earthquake, Stone Edge, and Fire Punch provides excellent neutral coverage across the board.

You can also run the Rock Head ability if you are utilizing recoil moves, though this requires giving up the safety net of Sturdy. A Focus Sash can artificially replicate Sturdy in this specific scenario.

For a purely defensive pivot, holding Leftovers or a Rocky Helmet can punish physical attackers, utilizing Smack Down to ground Flying-types for a follow-up Earthquake.

Golem cannot function alone. It requires teammates that can cover its glaring defensive holes and capitalize on the hazards it sets.

• Hitmontop: Offers Intimidate support to further buffer physical hits and can clear opponent hazards.
• Jolteon: A blazing fast special attacker that forces out the bulky Water-types Golem fears.
• Tauros-Paldea-Combat: An excellent physical breaker that synergizes perfectly with Golem's hazard pressure.
• Dusknoir: Acts as a spinblocker to ensure your Stealth Rock stays on the field after Golem faints.

Golem excels when facing pure physical attackers that lack super-effective coverage. Normal, Flying, and Fire-type physical attackers will struggle to break through its natural bulk.

However, its counter list is massive. Because its defensive typing is so easily exploited, we must look at attacking types. Water and Grass attackers are Golem's absolute worst nightmare.

A 4x weakness to both types means even weak, non-STAB special attacks will easily trigger Sturdy or score an OHKO. Fighting and Ground-type attackers also pose a massive threat.

Never leave Golem in against a special attacker unless you are deliberately sacrificing it to trigger a Custap Berry Explosion.

Competitive viability aside, Golem is historically fantastic for casual playthroughs. In Scarlet and Violet's story mode, its high Attack and Defense make it a highly reliable physical tank.

Looking ahead to Pokémon Legends: Z-A, physical bruisers usually perform exceptionally well in single-player campaigns. If Golem is available, it will likely be a solid team member for the main story.

In PvE, you do not have to worry about perfectly optimized special attackers outspeeding you at every turn, allowing Golem's raw stats to actually shine.

Do not use Golem in high-ladder VGC doubles. The format is far too fast, and spread moves like Earthquake and Surf make it impossible to keep Golem alive for more than a single turn.

If you need a bulky Rock-type in modern Scarlet and Violet competitive play, Garganacl is the vastly superior alternative. Garganacl's Purifying Salt ability and reliable recovery make it the premier physical wall.

Ultimately, Golem is strictly a niche pick for ZU singles or a fun, nostalgic choice for your main adventure. Respect its limits, and it will do exactly what you need it to.
