Is Hitmonchan Good?

Hitmonchan is highly situational. In competitive Scarlet and Violet PvP, it is restricted to the ZU tier where it serves as a niche Rapid Spin utility attacker. While its Iron Fist-boosted priority moves provide decent revenge-killing potential, its terrible Special Attack and low Speed make it unviable in standard or high-level formats.

Hitmonchan is heavily outclassed by faster Fighting-types but retains a small niche in ZU as a hazard-clearing spinner with priority.

Strengths

Hitmonchan currently sits in the ZU tier for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, holding a meager 2.1% usage rate. The competitive landscape has not been kind to this classic Fighting-type. Modern formats demand high Speed or massive bulk, and Hitmonchan falls awkwardly in the middle.

Its primary role in ZU is acting as a utility spinner. Access to Rapid Spin allows it to clear entry hazards, which is a highly valued trait in any tier. However, unlike premier spinners, Hitmonchan lacks the raw defensive stats to switch in repeatedly without taking severe damage.

To compensate for its sluggish Speed, Hitmonchan relies heavily on priority. Mach Punch and Bullet Punch are absolute staples in its moveset. When combined with the Iron Fist ability, these moves hit just hard enough to pick off weakened opponents, giving Hitmonchan a secondary role as a revenge killer.

Despite this utility, it is strictly a low-tier option. Players looking to climb ranked ladders in standard formats should look elsewhere, as Hitmonchan will instantly fold to standard Flying or Psychic-type attackers.

The Assault Vest Spinner

This is the most consistent set for Hitmonchan in the ZU tier. The Assault Vest leverages its naturally high Special Defense, allowing it to survive hits from special attackers and retaliate or clear hazards.

• Moves: Rapid Spin / Drain Punch / Mach Punch / Knock Off.

Drain Punch acts as Hitmonchan's only form of recovery, keeping it healthy throughout a match. Knock Off is crucial for removing items like Heavy-Duty Boots or Leftovers from defensive switch-ins. Rapid Spin clears the field, while Mach Punch ensures you can strike first against faster, frail targets.

The Heavy-Duty Boots Pivot

If your team desperately needs a spinner that ignores entry hazards upon entering the field, Heavy-Duty Boots is the preferred item. This set sacrifices special bulk for longevity against hazard-stacking teams.

• Item: Heavy-Duty Boots (or Protective Pads to ignore contact penalties).
• Moves: Rapid Spin / Close Combat / Mach Punch / Knock Off.

Here, Close Combat replaces Drain Punch for maximum immediate damage. Since you lack the Assault Vest, Hitmonchan cannot afford to stay in for long trades. Close Combat allows it to punch a massive hole in the opponent's defensive core before pivoting out.

Setup Variations

While rarer, Hitmonchan can run setup sets using Swords Dance or Bulk Up alongside a Life Orb or Leftovers. However, its low Speed makes sweeping difficult even at +2 Attack. These sets require extensive team support and are generally less reliable than its utility variants.

Hitmonchan shines when paired with teammates that cover its glaring weaknesses and capitalize on its hazard-clearing abilities. In the ZU tier, it forms a strong core with specific offensive and pivoting threats.

Typhlosion is an excellent partner. As a Fire-type, Typhlosion heavily relies on Hitmonchan's Rapid Spin to keep Stealth Rock off the field. In return, Typhlosion effortlessly melts the physical walls that Hitmonchan struggles to break.

Clawitzer and Morpeko also provide fantastic synergy. Clawitzer operates as a slow, devastating special wallbreaker that appreciates Hitmonchan removing hazards and softening targets with Knock Off. Morpeko, on the other hand, offers high-speed pivoting and can handle the Ghost and Psychic-types that threaten Hitmonchan.

For hazard control and momentum, Mesprit is a top-tier teammate. Mesprit can set up its own hazards, pivot out safely, and tank the Psychic-type attacks aimed at Hitmonchan. Finally, Dugtrio is invaluable for trapping and eliminating grounded Poison or Electric-types that might otherwise stall Hitmonchan out.

Hitmonchan's biggest flaw is its crippling vulnerability to Ghost-type Pokémon. Because Rapid Spin is a Normal-type move, Ghost-types can freely switch in to block the hazard removal. Since Hitmonchan relies on this utility to justify its team slot, being spinblocked completely neuters its momentum.

Its Speed stat is another massive liability. In a metagame where offensive threats are faster than ever, Hitmonchan almost always takes a hit before it can act. While Mach Punch helps mitigate this, priority moves lack the base power to OHKO healthy targets.

Furthermore, Hitmonchan's abilities outside of Iron Fist are entirely useless in competitive play. Keen Eye and Inner Focus provide zero offensive or defensive pressure, forcing it into a highly predictable Iron Fist set. Opponents know exactly what moves Hitmonchan is carrying just by seeing it on the team preview.

Finally, it struggles immensely against dedicated physical walls. Without a Life Orb or Swords Dance boost, Drain Punch and Close Combat fail to break through bulky Water or Flying-types, turning Hitmonchan into setup fodder.

Do not use Hitmonchan if you are playing in standard OU, UU, or VGC formats. It simply lacks the stats to compete with modern paradox Pokémon or high-tier staples. It will be outsped and knocked out before it can utilize Rapid Spin.

Avoid picking Hitmonchan if your team requires a dedicated, fast physical sweeper. Its reliance on low-base-power priority moves means it cannot sweep healthy teams. If you need immediate, high-speed physical damage in the ZU tier, Dugtrio is a far superior alternative due to its blistering Speed and trapping capabilities.

Similarly, if you need a bulky Fighting-type that can take repeated physical hits, Hitmonchan is the wrong choice. Its physical Defense is mediocre at best. You are better off relying on teammates like Mesprit to handle defensive utility, or using specialized wallbreakers like Clawitzer for raw damage output.
