Is Keldeo Good?

Situationally good. In Pokémon Scarlet & Violet DLC playthroughs and casual PvE, Keldeo excels as a fast Special Sweeper thanks to its 129 Special Attack and Secret Sword. However, it is completely unviable in serious competitive PvP, heavily outclassed by modern threats with better coverage and abilities.

Great for blasting through NPCs with Secret Sword, but completely overshadowed by Urshifu in competitive formats.

Strengths

• Excellent base 108 Speed and 129 Special Attack.
• Secret Sword bypasses Special Defense walls entirely.
• Resists common Dark, Steel, and Fire attacks.

Weaknesses

• Abysmal movepool coverage (cannot learn Ice Beam).
• Completely outclassed by Urshifu-Rapid-Strike.
• Predictable movesets make it easy to counter.

Keldeo occupies a frustrating middle ground in the current Pokémon landscape. For casual playthroughs, particularly in the Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: The Indigo Disk DLC, it functions as an A-tier Special Sweeper. Its base 129 Special Attack and 108 Speed allow it to outspeed and OHKO a massive portion of the in-game NPC rosters.

Its primary role is simple: hit fast and hit hard. You bring Keldeo in to punch holes in the opponent's team using high-base-power STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) moves. Because it resists common priority moves like Sucker Punch and Bullet Punch, it can reliably stay on the field against typical story bosses.

However, in serious competitive PvP formats, Keldeo is effectively untiered. It lacks the raw utility, priority, and ability synergy required to survive against modern threats. While it was a menace several generations ago, power creep has left it behind, making it a liability in ranked matches.

Keldeo’s entire identity revolves around its signature move, Secret Sword. While this is a Special Attack that utilizes Keldeo's massive 129 Special Attack stat, it calculates damage against the target's Physical Defense. This unique mechanic completely breaks traditional defensive cores.

In PvE, this means Keldeo effortlessly destroys dedicated Special walls. Pokémon like Blissey, Snorlax, or Goodra that normally absorb Special attacks take massive physical damage from Secret Sword. You never have to switch Keldeo out when facing a high Special Defense opponent.

Favorable Matchups

• Dark and Steel types: Keldeo resists their STABs and hits back with super-effective Fighting damage. Kingambit and Incineroar fall instantly.
• Rock and Ground types: With its high Speed, Keldeo outpaces almost all of them, securing easy OHKOs with Surf or Hydro Pump.
• Normal-type walls: Secret Sword makes quick work of any Normal-type trying to stall the game.

Because Keldeo's movepool is notoriously shallow, building its moveset is straightforward. You are essentially forced into a dual-STAB setup with very limited coverage options. For general DLC playthroughs and casual battles, a Choice Specs or Mystic Water set is optimal.

The Standard Sweeper Set

• Item: Choice Specs (for raw wall-breaking) or Mystic Water (for flexibility).
• Ability: Justified (its only ability, granting an Attack boost when hit by Dark moves—largely useless for a Special attacker).
• Moves: Hydro Pump / Surf / Secret Sword / Icy Wind.
• Tera Type: Water or Fighting (to boost its existing STABs).

Hydro Pump provides nuclear damage, while Surf offers 100% accuracy for sweeping weaker trainers. Secret Sword is mandatory. The fourth slot is where Keldeo struggles; Icy Wind or Air Slash are usually the best options, but their low base power makes them unreliable against bulky Grass or Dragon types.

Keldeo's biggest flaw is its movepool. For a Water-type Special attacker, not having access to Ice Beam is a fatal weakness. It cannot effectively threaten Grass or Dragon types, forcing it to switch out or rely on the weak Icy Wind. Opponents can easily predict its moves because it only ever clicks Water or Fighting attacks.

Furthermore, its ability, Justified, boosts Physical Attack when hit by a Dark-type move. Since Keldeo is purely a Special attacker, this ability is entirely useless. It essentially fights without an ability, putting it at a massive disadvantage against Pokémon with meta-defining traits.

It also struggles heavily against bulky Water types, Fairy types, and Psychic types. Pokémon like Slowbro, Azumarill, and Tapu Lele completely wall Keldeo, absorbing its attacks with ease while threatening an OHKO in return.

Do not use Keldeo for high-level Tera Raids. It lacks reliable setup moves like Nasty Plot. It only has access to Calm Mind, which is too slow to build up damage before the Raid boss resets your stats. Additionally, it lacks any form of reliable self-healing outside of the inaccurate draining moves.

More importantly, avoid Keldeo entirely if you are playing Ranked PvP (VGC or Singles). If you need a fast Water/Fighting type, Urshifu-Rapid-Strike is the strictly superior choice. Urshifu hits harder physically, its Surging Strikes always result in critical hits (ignoring stat drops), and its ability Unseen Fist allows it to completely bypass Protect.

Urshifu also gains access to Aqua Jet for priority, solving the speed-control issues that Keldeo faces. Unless you are playing a restricted format where Urshifu is banned, there is no competitive reason to slot Keldeo into your team.

As players look toward Pokémon Legends: Z-A in 2025, Keldeo's viability could shift drastically depending on the regional Pokédex. If power-crept Pokémon like Urshifu and the Paradox forms are excluded from the game, Keldeo could easily reclaim its spot as a top-tier threat.

In restricted, curated environments without overwhelming power creep, base 108 Speed and 129 Special Attack are devastating. If Legends Z-A introduces new move tutors or expands its coverage options—finally giving it Ice Beam or a better Fairy counter—Keldeo's verdict will improve significantly.

For now, keep it in your PC for competitive matches, but feel free to let it loose in the Blueberry Academy terrarium where it still shines as a phenomenal PvE sweeper.
