Politoed (Competitive)
Politoed is highly situational but strictly mandatory for rain teams in the Smogon SV RU tier. It relies entirely on its Drizzle ability to enable Swift Swim sweepers. Outside of dedicated weather teams, it lacks the stats and recovery to function as a standalone bulky Water-type.
Verdict
Politoed is a one-trick amphibian that dictates the pace of RU rain teams but falls flat everywhere else.

Tier & Role: The King of RU Rain
In the current Scarlet and Violet competitive landscape,
Politoed occupies a very specific niche in the Smogon RU tier, sitting at a 5.9% usage rate. Its entire viability revolves around a single asset: the Drizzle ability. When
Politoed enters the field, it summons rain for five to eight turns, instantly changing the weather arithmetic of the match.
Without Drizzle,
Politoed would be virtually unplayable. Its alternative abilities, Water Absorb and Damp, are mathematically useless compared to the raw utility of automatic weather generation.
Politoed does not function as a traditional wall or a standalone tank. Instead, it plays the role of a dedicated enabler and bulky pivot.
Its stat distribution is aggressively average, heavily leaning into Special Defense. This allows it to take a stray special attack, set the rain, and attempt to disrupt the opponent before going down. You do not draft
Politoed to sweep; you draft it to ensure your actual sweepers have the weather they need to win the game.
Offensive Synergies & Best Teammates
Politoed is only as good as the Pokémon standing behind it. In SV RU, drafting
Politoed means you are immediately drafting
Barraskewda or
Basculegion.
Barraskewda becomes the fastest physical threat in the tier under rain, using Choice Band or Mystic Water to tear through defensive cores.
Politoed sets the stage, and
Barraskewda executes the sweep.
Basculegion and Basculegion-F offer a bulkier, more resilient Swift Swim option. Their Ghost typing provides crucial immunities to Normal and Fighting moves, covering
Politoed's blind spots.
Kingdra remains the premier special attacking Swift Swim option, leveraging Choice Specs to fire off unresisted Water-type attacks across the tier.
Barraskewda: The ultimate physical glass cannon under rain.
Basculegion / Basculegion-F: Bulky physical or special wallbreakers that ignore Normal/Fighting attacks.
Kingdra: The special attacking equivalent, immune to Burn drops and highly resistant to Water/Fire.
Forretress: The premier hazard control partner.
Forretress is a mandatory defensive partner. Since
Politoed forces switches, entry hazards like Stealth Rock and Spikes rack up massive residual damage.
Forretress sets these hazards while also providing Rapid Spin to keep
Politoed's side of the field clean, ensuring it can switch in multiple times to reset the rain.
Disruption & Niche Sets: Perish Trap and Specs
While the standard setter build is the most common,
Politoed has access to a vicious utility movepool that can catch opponents off guard. The most infamous is the Whirlpool and Perish Song combination. By trapping a defensive wall with Whirlpool,
Politoed can sing a Perish Song, stall out the turns with Protect, and switch out at the last second to guarantee a knockout.
Haze is another critical utility option. RU is filled with setup sweepers that view
Politoed as passive setup fodder. Dropping a Haze the turn an opponent uses Calm Mind or Dragon Dance instantly resets their progress, forcing them to attack
Politoed's respectable special bulk directly.
For players looking to break the mold, a Choice Specs set can function as a surprise wallbreaker. Using Drizzle-boosted Surf or Weather Ball alongside Earth Power and Ice Beam allows
Politoed to severely dent common switch-ins. Earth Power is specifically vital here to catch Electric types attempting to gain momentum, while Leftovers can be run on bulkier variants to compensate for its lack of reliable recovery.
Hard Counters & Matchup Nightmares
Politoed's flaws are glaring and easily exploitable by top-tier RU threats.
Necrozma is a primary offender. If
Politoed lacks Encore or Haze,
Necrozma uses it as free setup fodder for Calm Mind or Dragon Dance, easily tanking a Surf and proceeding to sweep the team.
Gardevoir and
Gallade pose similar threats, leveraging their high Special Defense to ignore
Politoed's attacks before retaliating with massive damage.
Electric and Grass types naturally terrorize
Politoed.
Toxtricity is a specific nightmare matchup. It resists
Politoed's STAB attacks, ignores Substitutes with Boomburst, and threatens a clean OHKO with its Electric STAB.
Politoed cannot stay in against
Toxtricity under any circumstances unless it is running the niche Earth Power on a prediction.
Toxtricity: Resists Water, OHKOs with Electric STAB, ignores Substitute.
Crawdaunt: Threatens massive physical damage with Knock Off, removing
Politoed's crucial Damp Rock or Heavy-Duty Boots.
Mimikyu: Uses Disguise to take a hit and sets up Swords Dance freely.
Necrozma,
Gardevoir,
Gallade: Bulky Psychic types that shrug off Water attacks and set up or wallbreak.
Crawdaunt is another major issue. It hits incredibly hard on the physical side, targeting
Politoed's weaker Defense stat. A single Knock Off removes
Politoed's item, crippling its ability to provide long-term rain support or safely pivot.
In-Game Playthrough Viability (Scarlet & Violet)
For a standard Scarlet and Violet story playthrough,
Politoed is frustrating to acquire and mediocre to use. Evolving
Poliwhirl requires trading it while holding a King's Rock. This trade evolution mechanic makes it inaccessible for players who prefer a solo experience or lack Nintendo Switch Online.
If you do manage to get one, its performance in the story is a mixed bag. Drizzle is overkill for standard NPC battles, and the constant weather animations slow down the pacing of the game. Its low base Speed means it takes unnecessary damage from wild Pokémon and trainers before it can move.
While its bulk allows it to survive most hits in the main story, there are simply better, faster, and more easily accessible Water-types in Paldea, such as
Palafin or
Azumarill, which hit much harder without requiring a trade evolution.
When to Avoid & Best Alternatives
Do not use
Politoed if you are not running a dedicated rain team. It does not have the stats, the recovery, or the defensive typing to operate as a standalone bulky Water-type. If you just need a Pokémon to take hits and pivot, look elsewhere. It is also a liability against hyper-offense teams that can overwhelm its average physical defense before it can safely pivot out.
If you are playing in higher tiers like Smogon OU,
Politoed is completely unviable. The premier alternative is
Pelipper.
Pelipper completely outclasses
Politoed in OU because it possesses Roost for reliable recovery, U-turn for guaranteed momentum, and a secondary Flying typing that provides a crucial ground immunity.
If you are playing RU and simply need a bulky Water-type pivot rather than a weather setter,
Slowking is a vastly superior choice. It offers Regenerator for passive healing, Future Sight for offensive pressure, and Chilly Reception for safe pivoting, performing the standalone defensive role that
Politoed mathematically cannot.

Politoed Competitive FAQ
Is Politoed better than Pelipper?
No. In higher tiers like OU, Pelipper is strictly better because it has Roost for recovery and U-turn for pivoting. Politoed is only used in lower tiers like RU where Pelipper is banned, serving as the default Drizzle setter by necessity.
What is the best moveset for Politoed?
The standard RU setter set runs Surf, Weather Ball, Ice Beam, and Encore. You should hold a Damp Rock to maximize rain turns or an Eject Button to safely pivot out after taking a hit, guaranteeing a safe switch for your sweepers.
What are Politoed's biggest weaknesses?
Politoed suffers from low base Speed and a complete lack of reliable recovery. It gets worn down easily by entry hazards like Spikes and Stealth Rock, and it is highly vulnerable to strong Electric and Grass attackers like Toxtricity.
Is Politoed good for a Scarlet/Violet playthrough?
It is generally not recommended for the main story. Evolving it requires trading a Poliwhirl with a King's Rock, which is tedious. Furthermore, its low Speed and the constant rain animations slow down the pacing of standard NPC battles.
