Is Regice Good?

Regice is highly situational and generally poor in modern competitive play, sitting squarely in the ZU tier for Scarlet and Violet. Despite possessing legendary Special Defense, its pure Ice typing leaves it incredibly vulnerable to common entry hazards and physical attackers. It functions adequately as a bulky special attacker in lower tiers, but fails against standard high-ladder meta threats.

Regice boasts immense special bulk but is completely held back by its Ice typing and reliance on Rest for recovery.

Strengths

• Massive Special Defense allows it to tank almost any unboosted special attack.
• Excellent BoltBeam offensive coverage (Ice Beam + Thunderbolt).
• Clear Body ability prevents opponents from lowering its stats.
• Access to utility moves like Thunder Wave to cripple faster threats.

Weaknesses

• Pure Ice is the worst defensive typing, offering only one resistance (Ice) and four common weaknesses.
• Extremely slow, forcing it to take a hit before moving.
• Severely weak to Stealth Rock unless holding Heavy-Duty Boots.
• No reliable recovery moves outside of the Rest + Sleep Talk combo.

In the current competitive landscape of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Regice finds itself relegated to the ZU (Zero Used) tier. With a marginal usage rate of roughly 1.4% in this specific bracket, it is far from a meta staple.

Its primary role is that of a Special Tank or Bulky Attacker. On paper, its base Special Defense is astronomical, allowing it to shrug off special hits that would obliterate other Pokémon. However, base stats only tell half the story.

Because it is a pure Ice-type, Regice lacks the resistances necessary to function as a true universal wall. It is forced to rely on its natural bulk rather than type advantages. Its ability, Clear Body, is a significant asset here, ensuring that opponents cannot drop its Special Attack or Special Defense with secondary move effects.

While Ice Body exists as a secondary ability option, it is largely inferior unless you are running a highly specific Snow team, making Clear Body the undisputed standard for standard singles play.

To get any mileage out of Regice, you must commit to sets that either maximize its offensive coverage or lean heavily into its stalling capabilities. Here are the two most viable approaches in the ZU tier.

The Assault Vest Tank

This set turns Regice into a bulky offensive pivot. By holding an Assault Vest, its Special Defense reaches absurd levels, allowing it to trade blows with almost any special attacker.

Ice Beam and Thunderbolt provide the coveted "BoltBeam" coverage, hitting a massive portion of the roster for neutral or super-effective damage. Focus Blast punishes Steel and Rock-types that try to switch in, while Flash Cannon provides necessary coverage against Fairy and opposing Ice-types.

The RestTalk Wall

Because Regice lacks Roost or Recover, it must rely on Rest to heal. This set requires patience and prediction.

• Moves: Rest, Sleep Talk, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt

Rest fully restores its HP and cures status conditions like Toxic. Sleep Talk ensures Regice isn't entirely passive while asleep. If entry hazards are a major issue for your team, Heavy-Duty Boots are mandatory here to prevent Regice from losing a quarter of its health every time it switches in.

When positioned correctly, Regice can be a nightmare for teams that rely entirely on special damage. In the ZU tier, it comfortably switches into special attackers that lack super-effective coverage.

Its offensive pressure is surprisingly consistent. The combination of Ice Beam and Thunderbolt is notoriously difficult to resist. Water-types that switch in to tank an Ice Beam are immediately threatened by Thunderbolt, while Flying and Grass-types are obliterated by its STAB Ice attacks.

Furthermore, Regice can utilize Thunder Wave on predicted switches. Because it is incredibly slow, paralyzing a faster incoming threat can instantly swing the momentum of a match, allowing Regice or a teammate to outspeed and secure a knockout on the following turn.

Against teams that try to play a war of attrition using stat-dropping moves, Clear Body shines. Regice ignores these attempts entirely, maintaining its offensive presence and defensive bulk throughout the match.

We have to address the elephant in the room: pure Ice is arguably the worst defensive typing in the franchise. Regice is weak to Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel—four of the most common offensive types in the game.

Physical attackers completely dismantle it. While its Special Defense is legendary, its physical Defense is merely average. A strong physical Fighting-type or Rock-type attacker will easily OHKO (One-Hit Knockout) Regice before it even has a chance to move, exploiting its terrible Speed tier.

Entry hazards are another massive vulnerability. Stealth Rock strips away 25% of its maximum HP every time it enters the field. If you are not running Heavy-Duty Boots, Regice's longevity is severely compromised, forcing it to use Rest prematurely.

Finally, Regice is highly susceptible to passive damage if it isn't running Rest. Toxic poison or Leech Seed will wear it down rapidly, bypassing its massive defensive stats and forcing it off the field.

Regice cannot function in a vacuum; it requires a team built to cover its glaring physical and typing-based weaknesses. In the SV ZU tier, specific partners are essential for its success.

Torkoal is a phenomenal partner. It provides crucial utility by spinning away Stealth Rock with Rapid Spin, protecting Regice from hazard damage. Additionally, Torkoal's massive physical Defense perfectly complements Regice's special bulk.

Skuntank offers excellent type synergy. It absorbs Toxic spikes, provides an immunity to Psychic-types, and can handle Ghost and Dark-type threats. Skuntank can also use Knock Off to remove Heavy-Duty Boots from opponents, making Regice's offensive pressure more threatening.

Farigiraf and Clawitzer serve as excellent offensive partners. Farigiraf's ability blocks priority moves that would otherwise pick off a weakened Regice, while Clawitzer provides immediate wall-breaking power against the Fire and Rock-types that threaten Regice.

Regirock can form a thematic and effective defensive core, taking on the physical hits that Regice cannot survive, particularly from Flying and Normal-type physical attackers.

If you are trying to climb the ranked ladder in standard OU or UU formats, leave Regice in the PC. The power level of higher tiers is simply too much for it to handle. Fast, physical wallbreakers will exploit its weaknesses effortlessly.

You should also avoid drafting Regice if your team lacks reliable hazard control. Without a dedicated Rapid Spin or Defog user, Regice will spend the entire match taking chip damage from Stealth Rock and Spikes, rendering its bulk useless.

If you need a bulky special wall, consider looking toward bulky Water-types or Steel-types instead. They offer vastly superior defensive profiles, multiple resistances, and often have access to reliable recovery moves that do not put them to sleep.

For casual story playthroughs, however, Regice is perfectly fine. The AI rarely utilizes entry hazards or optimized physical wallbreakers, allowing Regice to comfortably tank hits and fire off powerful Ice Beams against Gym Leaders and Elite Four members.
