Is Regirock Good?

Regirock is highly situational and largely confined to the ZU tier in Scarlet and Violet. While its massive physical bulk and access to Iron Defense and Body Press make it a sturdy physical wall, its pure Rock typing leaves it vulnerable to common Fighting, Ground, and Water-type attackers.

In the current Scarlet and Violet competitive landscape, Regirock finds itself relegated to the ZU tier, holding a modest 9.2% usage rate. Its stat distribution heavily favors physical defense, making it one of the most resilient physical sponges in the lower tiers.

However, its pure Rock typing is a massive defensive liability. It takes super effective damage from common attacking types like Fighting, Ground, Water, Grass, and Steel.

Despite these flaws, Regirock carves out a specific niche as a dedicated physical wall and hazard setter. It relies heavily on its defensive traits to stay relevant against physical threats.

You can choose between two viable abilities depending on your build. Clear Body is excellent for ignoring stat drops from opposing abilities or moves. Sturdy acts as a built-in safety net, guaranteeing Regirock can survive at least one massive hit to retaliate or set up.

To get the most out of Regirock in Scarlet and Violet, you need to lean fully into its physical bulk. The most effective strategy revolves around turning its massive defense into offensive power.

The Iron Defense + Body Press Wall

This set turns Regirock into a dangerous threat against physical teams. By boosting its defense, it simultaneously increases its damage output.

• Moves: Iron Defense, Body Press, Stealth Rock, Stone Edge (or Rock Blast)
• Ability: Clear Body
• Items: Leftovers or Rocky Helmet

Iron Defense sharply raises its physical bulk, making it nearly unkillable by physical attackers. Body Press calculates damage using the Defense stat instead of Attack, allowing Regirock to hit incredibly hard after a boost.

For utility, Stealth Rock provides essential hazard support for the team. Your STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) option can be Stone Edge for burst damage or Rock Blast to break substitutes.

Other viable options include Thunder Wave for speed control or Heavy Slam to punish lighter targets. If you prefer immediate damage over setup, an Assault Vest, Black Belt, or Expert Belt can be used on a purely offensive variant.

Regirock shines when positioned against pure physical attackers that lack super-effective coverage. Once it sets up an Iron Defense, most physical hits simply bounce off.

To succeed, Regirock requires teammates that can cover its glaring defensive holes. You need partners that can handle special attackers and resist its many weaknesses.

Ideal ZU Teammates

• Venusaur: Provides crucial resistances to Water and Grass-type attacks while threatening them back.
• Skuntank: Absorbs toxic hazards and provides a crucial immunity to Psychic-type moves.
• Mesprit: Offers Ground immunity and can provide speed control or pivoting.
• Jolteon: Outspeeds threats that Regirock cannot, forcing out Water and Flying-types.
• Clawitzer: Brings heavy special wallbreaking power to complement Regirock's physical presence.

When paired with these allies, Regirock can safely focus on setting Stealth Rock or setting up its Body Press sweep without fear of being immediately forced out.

We have to be honest: Regirock has massive flaws that keep it stuck in the ZU tier. The biggest issue is its pure Rock typing, which is arguably one of the worst defensive types in the game.

It is exceptionally vulnerable to Fighting, Ground, Water, Grass, and Steel-type attacks. Even with its colossal physical bulk, strong super-effective hits will severely dent it.

Furthermore, Regirock has abysmal Special Defense and Speed. Special attackers will easily outspeed and OHKO it before it can react.

Opposing Mesprit acts as a massive counter to Regirock. Mesprit can exploit Regirock's low special bulk and easily pivot around it, completely shutting down its momentum.

Finally, Regirock suffers from a complete lack of reliable recovery. Its only healing option is Rest, which leaves it asleep and vulnerable for two turns. This forces a heavy reliance on Leftovers, making it easy to wear down over a long match.

You should absolutely avoid bringing Regirock into higher-tier ranked matches. In standard OU or UU play, the power level of special attackers and the prevalence of strong Ground and Fighting-types make Regirock dead weight.

Do not draft Regirock if your team lacks a solid core of special walls. If you cannot safely absorb incoming special attacks, Regirock will be quickly eliminated.

Avoid using Regirock if you need a reliable defensive pivot. Because it lacks recovery outside of Rest, it cannot consistently switch into entry hazards and attacks throughout a long game.

If you need a bulky physical wall in higher tiers, look toward Steel-type or Ground-type walls instead. They offer vastly superior defensive typings and often have access to instant recovery moves.

While its competitive viability is restricted to the ZU tier, Regirock remains a solid choice for casual playthroughs. Looking ahead to Pokémon Legends: Z-A, its raw stats will likely make it a reliable tank for story progression.

In single-player modes, the lack of reliable recovery is less punishing since you can simply use items from your bag. Its massive physical stats allow it to steamroll most generic NPC trainers.

Its Sturdy ability is particularly useful against boss encounters. It guarantees Regirock survives a lethal blow, giving you a free turn to heal or land a crucial hit.
