Shaymin (In-Game & Casual)
Shaymin is strictly a situational PvE powerhouse. In story modes and casual play, its Sky Forme dominates thanks to base 120 Speed and Serene Grace. However, it is completely unviable in serious competitive play because Mythical Pokémon are banned from Scarlet and Violet Ranked formats, and Land Forme is too passive for modern use.
Verdict
Sky Forme turns
Shaymin into a flinch-inducing terror, but its Mythical status and strict transformation limits ruin its consistency.

Tier & Role: The Tale of Two Formes
Evaluating
Shaymin requires splitting it into two entirely different Pokémon. Because it does not appear in Smogon's standard Scarlet and Violet competitive usage stats, we judge it strictly on its performance in casual playthroughs, Tera Raids, and unrestricted formats with friends.
Land Forme is a passive, pure Grass-type with flat base 100 stats across the board. While bulky, its typing leaves it vulnerable to U-turn, Ice Spinner, and Flare Blitz. It functions decently as a cleric using Aromatherapy and Synthesis, but it lacks the offensive pressure needed to clear modern end-game content efficiently.
Sky Forme is where
Shaymin earns its keep. Gaining the Grass/Flying typing, its stats shift drastically to base 120 Speed and base 120 Special Attack. More importantly, it gains Serene Grace. This turns it into a ruthless Special Sweeper. It operates similarly to
Togekiss but hits significantly harder right out of the gate. In a casual playthrough, if you can keep it in Sky Forme, it will sweep entire NPC teams single-handedly.
Best In-Game Sets & Loadouts
To get the most out of
Shaymin in Scarlet and Violet's DLCs or post-game, you must build around Sky Forme's strengths. The goal is to maximize its Speed and exploit Serene Grace to overwhelm opponents before they can exploit its fragile defenses.
The Sky Forme Sweeper
- Item: Leftovers or Life Orb
- Ability: Serene Grace
- Tera Type: Steel or Fire
- Moves: Seed Flare / Air Slash / Earth Power / Synthesis
This is the definitive set. Seed Flare is the primary nuke. With Serene Grace, its 40% chance to drop the target's Special Defense by two stages doubles to an absurd 80%. If the opponent survives the first hit, their Special Defense is usually crippled, guaranteeing a knockout on the second turn.
Air Slash provides the infamous 60% flinch chance, allowing
Shaymin to bypass slower, bulkier threats by simply denying them a turn. Earth Power is mandatory coverage to hit the Steel and Fire types that resist both of its STAB attacks. Synthesis provides reliable recovery, mitigating Life Orb recoil or chip damage from entry hazards.
Best Uses & Matchups
Shaymin excels in breaking down slow, bulky Pokémon that rely on defensive stats rather than offensive pressure. Water, Ground, and Rock types are completely walled and destroyed by Seed Flare. It naturally outspeeds and OHKOs threats like
Ting-Lu,
Dondozo, and
Garganacl in unrestricted battles.
In the context of Scarlet and Violet's Indigo Disk DLC, Sky Forme outpaces many of the challenging NPC trainers. Its base 120 Speed ties with
Sceptile and
Alakazam, meaning it rarely takes a hit before moving. The 60% flinch rate from Air Slash is an excellent panic button against opponents you cannot OHKO, such as bulky Fighting or Bug types.
For Tera Raids, Land Forme actually finds a niche. Its base 100 bulk combined with Natural Cure allows it to survive heavy hits and ignore status conditions. You can run a purely supportive set with Helping Hand, Synthesis, and Grass Knot to assist teammates against Water or Ground-type raid bosses.
Honest Weaknesses: The Gracidea Limitation
Shaymin's biggest flaw is not its stats, but its mechanics. To use Sky Forme, you must use the Gracidea flower. However,
Shaymin instantly reverts to Land Forme at night, or if it gets frozen. In older games, this was tied to the Switch's real-world clock. In Scarlet and Violet, it is tied to the game's internal 72-minute day/night cycle.
This means every 36 minutes of real-world time, your Sky Forme
Shaymin will forcibly revert to Land Forme if night falls in Paldea. You cannot use the Gracidea at night. This makes
Shaymin incredibly frustrating to use for extended gaming sessions, as you are constantly fighting the game engine just to keep your Pokémon in its viable state.
Typing is another severe issue. Sky Forme is doubly weak to Ice. A single Ice Shard from a
Weavile,
Baxcalibur, or even a weak NPC will instantly knock it out due to the 4x multiplier and its mediocre base 75 defenses. Furthermore, its movepool is incredibly shallow. Outside of Grass, Flying, and Ground moves, it has almost zero viable special attacks, leaving it completely walled by Flying/Steel types like
Corviknight or
Skarmory.
Looking Ahead: Pokémon Legends Z-A Context
With Pokémon Legends: Z-A slated for 2025,
Shaymin's utility may shift dramatically. If the game uses the Action Order battle system from Legends:
Arceus, Sky Forme's base 120 Speed will be a massive asset, allowing it to take multiple turns in a row using Agile Style moves.
However, Legends:
Arceus removed Abilities from the game. If Legends: Z-A follows suit, Sky Forme will lose Serene Grace. Without Serene Grace, Seed Flare drops back to a 40% chance for a stat drop, and Air Slash loses its reliable flinch mechanic. This would severely nerf
Shaymin's offensive consistency, reducing it to a fast but predictable Grass/Flying attacker.
Players planning to transfer
Shaymin to future titles should temper their expectations until the mechanical rules of the Kalos return are fully revealed.
Avoid If... & Best Alternatives
Do not use
Shaymin if you are looking to climb the Ranked Ladder in Scarlet and Violet. As a Mythical Pokémon, it is hard-coded to be illegal in VGC and standard Ranked Singles. You should also avoid it if you primarily play the game at night, as the Gracidea flower will constantly fail, leaving you stuck with the underwhelming Land Forme.
If you need a fast, aggressive Grass-type for competitive play or consistent in-game sweeps,
Ogerpon (Teal Mask) is a vastly superior alternative.
Ogerpon is legal in VGC, has a much better offensive typing, a phenomenal ability in Defiant, and doesn't rely on frustrating day/night cycles.
For players who specifically want a Special Attacking Grass-type with stat-manipulating STAB moves,
Serperior is the better choice. With its Hidden Ability Contrary, Leaf Storm boosts its Special Attack by two stages every time it is used, creating a snowball effect that is far more reliable than Seed Flare's 85% accuracy and RNG-dependent stat drops.

Frequently Asked Questions about Shaymin
Is Shaymin Sky Forme better than Land Forme?
Yes, Sky Forme is vastly superior for offensive play. It gains a massive boost to Speed and Special Attack, and the Serene Grace ability makes its attacks far more dangerous. Land Forme is too slow and passive for modern battles.
Can I use Shaymin in Scarlet and Violet Ranked battles?
No. Shaymin is a Mythical Pokémon, which means it is permanently banned from official Ranked Singles and VGC formats. You can only use it in casual playthroughs, Tera Raids, and unranked battles with friends.
Why does my Shaymin keep changing back to Land Forme?
Shaymin automatically reverts to Land Forme when the in-game time turns to night, when it is deposited into a PC box or Pokémon HOME, or if it gets frozen in battle. You must reapply the Gracidea flower during the in-game day to transform it back.
Is Shaymin better than Serperior?
In a casual playthrough, Shaymin Sky Forme is faster and hits harder immediately. However, for actual competitive play and consistency, Serperior is much better because it is legally allowed in ranked formats and uses Contrary Leaf Storm to boost its stats reliably.
