Is Thundurus Good?

Is Thundurus Good?

Thundurus (Viability)

Yes for casual playthroughs, but absolutely No for serious Scarlet and Violet competitive Singles. While its Electric/Flying typing and base 125 Special Attack easily tear through NPC teams in the DLC, massive speed power creep and Prankster ability nerfs have completely pushed Thundurus out of the modern meta.

Verdict

A former titan that now serves best as a reliable, fast Electric-type for your DLC story team rather than a ranked ladder staple.

Tier & Role: A Fallen Giant

Thundurus has suffered a massive fall from grace. Once a terrifying force in older generations, it currently holds no viable tier in serious Smogon SV Singles. The competitive reality of Scarlet and Violet is incredibly harsh to older glass cannons.

Power creep has completely restructured the speed tiers. Base 111 Speed was once elite; today, it leaves Thundurus outpaced by common modern threats. Without a speed-boosting item, it gets outsped and knocked out before it can execute its strategy.

The Death of Prankster Support

Its hidden ability, Prankster, used to be its main selling point for priority status moves. However, mechanical changes over the years have gutted this strategy. Dark-types are now entirely immune to Prankster-boosted moves, blocking its disruption.

Furthermore, Electric-types are immune to paralysis. This means Thundurus cannot reliably cripple opposing fast sweepers like it used to. As a pure special attacker, it lacks the raw damage output to compete with modern wallbreakers without multiple setup turns.

In-Game Playthrough Performance (Scarlet/Violet & Z-A)

While competitively obsolete, Thundurus remains a fantastic choice for casual playthroughs and the Scarlet/Violet DLC story. The Indigo Disk expansion features high-level NPC double battles where Thundurus's offensive stats absolutely shine.

Its Electric/Flying typing is phenomenal for story progression. You gain a crucial immunity to Ground-type attacks, which are spammed heavily by late-game NPCs. It effortlessly handles the numerous Water and Flying types you encounter across the Paldea region and Blueberry Academy.

Anticipating Legends: Z-A

As we look ahead to Pokémon Legends: Z-A, fast, hard-hitting Pokémon historically dominate the open-world format. If Thundurus is available, its high base Speed will allow it to act first against almost all wild encounters.

In single-player modes, you do not need to worry about complex meta strategies. A simple setup with a boosting move followed by strong STAB attacks is more than enough to sweep entire Gym Leader or Elite Four rematches without breaking a sweat.

The Forms: Incarnate vs. Therian

Thundurus forces you to choose between two distinct forms: Incarnate and Therian. The Incarnate form is the default and relies on its base 111 Speed. This speed tier is non-negotiable if you want to outrun the crowded base 110 speed bracket during your playthrough.

Incarnate also gives you access to Prankster. Even with the mechanical nerfs, having priority on Taunt is incredibly useful for shutting down NPC status moves or preventing wild Pokémon from healing during capture attempts.

The Therian Trap

The Therian form boasts a massive base 145 Special Attack and the Volt Absorb ability. On paper, it looks like a superior wallbreaker. In practice, it is a trap for most single-player and singles formats.

Therian drops its Speed to base 101. In modern Pokémon games, base 101 is an awkward, dead zone. You are too slow to sweep and too frail to take a hit. Unless you are running a dedicated speed-control team in double battles, Therian form will consistently disappoint you.

Best Casual Movesets & Synergies

Since you should strictly be using Thundurus for in-game content or casual battles, a pure offensive setup is the most efficient route. Give it a Life Orb or Magnet to maximize its damage output without locking it into a single move.

A Timid nature with maximum effort values in Special Attack and Speed ensures you hit as fast and hard as possible. For the moveset, you need coverage to handle its traditional defensive roadblocks.

  • Nasty Plot: Essential for doubling your Special Attack against passive leads.
  • Thunderbolt: Your most reliable STAB move with perfect accuracy.
  • Sludge Wave: Crucial coverage to hit Grass and Fairy types that resist your Electric attacks.
  • Focus Blast: Provides necessary damage against Rock and Steel types, though its accuracy is a risk.

Pair Thundurus with a strong physical Ground-type. They easily absorb the Rock-type attacks aimed at Thundurus, while Thundurus switches in for free on Ground-type moves targeting your partner.

Matchups It Wins

Thundurus absolutely dismantles bulky Water and Flying types. Slow, defensive Water-types are forced to switch out immediately when Thundurus hits the field. Its raw Electric STAB is simply too threatening for them to absorb.

It also excels against passive, slow teams in casual formats. If you run Prankster Taunt on the Incarnate form, you can completely shut down hazard setters. They cannot lay down Spikes or Stealth Rock, forcing them to use weak attacks against your superior speed.

In the Indigo Disk double battles, Thundurus partners exceptionally well with Earthquake users. You can freely spam spread Ground moves with your partner while Thundurus fires off boosted attacks, remaining immune to the friendly fire thanks to its Flying typing.

Honest Weaknesses

Thundurus is notoriously fragile on the physical side. With a miserable base 70 Defense, almost any strong neutral physical attack will deal massive damage. It cannot function as a defensive pivot under any circumstances.

Priority moves are its ultimate weakness. Because it relies entirely on being faster than the opponent, moves that bypass speed completely ruin its strategy. Strong Ice Shard or Extreme Speed users will frequently secure a one-hit KO against it.

The Stealth Rock Problem

As an Electric/Flying type, Thundurus loses 25% of its maximum HP every time it switches into Stealth Rock. This severely limits how often it can enter the battlefield during a longer match.

To mitigate this, you are almost forced to run Heavy-Duty Boots in any format where hazards are present. This deprives Thundurus of a damage-boosting item, making its hits noticeably weaker against bulky targets.

Avoid If... & Alternatives

Do not use Thundurus if you are attempting to climb the ranked ladder in Scarlet and Violet Singles. The speed power creep is too severe, and it simply lacks the stats to compete. It is also a terrible choice if your team lacks reliable hazard removal.

If you need a bulky pivot, look elsewhere. Thundurus has no reliable recovery moves, meaning any damage it takes is permanent. It will get worn down far too quickly to support your team long-term.

The Superior Alternative: Zapdos

If you want an Electric/Flying type that actually functions well in both casual and competitive environments, use Zapdos. Zapdos has significantly better bulk and access to Roost for instant healing.

Furthermore, Zapdos possesses the Static ability, which heavily punishes physical attackers that try to exploit it. While Thundurus is a fragile, outdated glass cannon, Zapdos remains a versatile staple that fits on almost any team composition.

Frequently Asked Questions About Thundurus

Is Thundurus better than Zapdos?

No. Zapdos is significantly better in almost every format. Zapdos has superior bulk, access to Roost for reliable recovery, and the Static ability to punish physical attackers. Thundurus is a fragile glass cannon that lacks the longevity required for modern battles.

Which form of Thundurus is better to use?

Incarnate form is generally better due to its base 111 Speed and Prankster ability. Therian form has a massive 145 Special Attack, but its base 101 Speed is far too slow to sweep effectively without dedicated speed-control support.

What is the best moveset for Thundurus?

For a casual offensive sweep, run Nasty Plot, Thunderbolt, Sludge Wave, and Focus Blast. Equip a Life Orb or Heavy-Duty Boots, use a Timid nature, and maximize your Special Attack and Speed effort values.

Why isn't Thundurus used in competitive Scarlet and Violet?

Massive power creep has rendered Thundurus competitively obsolete in Singles. It is outsped by modern threats, lacks reliable recovery, and mechanical nerfs to the Prankster ability have ruined its former utility as a priority status supporter.
