For story progression and PvE content across Scarlet and Violet, Urshifu operates as an elite physical wallbreaker. Its entire kit is designed to dismantle defensive setups without relying on stat-boosting turns.

The guaranteed critical hits from its signature moves mean it completely ignores any Defense boosts an opponent might have acquired. This is particularly valuable in late-game encounters where NPCs frequently use setup moves to stall you out.

Because it requires zero setup to deal massive damage, it serves as a reliable fire-and-forget attacker. You send it in, select its signature move, and punch an immediate hole in the opposing team.

Urshifu truly shines in high-level Tera Raids. Raid bosses often spam defensive boosts or set up screens, which usually stall out standard physical attackers and drain the raid timer.

Thanks to guaranteed critical hits, Urshifu ignores Reflect, Light Screen, and any Defense modifiers. The critical hit multiplier also ignores any Attack drops Urshifu might have suffered from moves like Intimidate or Charm.

• Breaking through raid bosses that rely on Iron Defense, Curse, or Acid Armor.
• Bypassing Protect spam from late-game double battle NPCs using Unseen Fist.

Its base physical bulk also allows it to survive most physical hits from raid bosses. This gives you enough time to deal consistent, heavy damage before the timer runs out.

Choosing between the Dark/Fighting Single Strike and Water/Fighting Rapid Strike forms drastically alters your playthrough experience. Both share the Unseen Fist ability, but their offensive profiles differ significantly.

Rapid Strike is generally superior for general PvE. Surging Strikes hits three times, breaking Focus Sashes, Sturdy abilities, and Substitute in a single turn. The Water/Fighting typing also offers excellent neutral coverage against most story trainers.

Single Strike hits harder in a single instance with Wicked Blow. However, its Dark/Fighting typing leaves it with a glaring four-times weakness to Fairy. This makes it much harder to keep alive against random late-game trainers who often carry coverage moves.

Despite its offensive dominance against the AI, Urshifu has massive defensive holes. Its base Special Defense is exceptionally low, meaning almost any strong special attack will force it out or knock it out entirely.

The Single Strike form is notoriously fragile against Fairy-type attacks. A random Dazzling Gleam or Moonblast from a vastly underleveled NPC can easily result in an unexpected one-hit knockout.

Primary Threats to Avoid

While it destroys in-game AI, Urshifu is entirely non-viable in serious competitive formats. It simply does not appear in standard competitive usage statistics for Scarlet and Violet.

Players looking to climb ranked ladders or participate in serious tournaments should leave Urshifu in the PC. Its linear playstyle makes it entirely predictable against human opponents who know exactly how to exploit its poor Special Defense.

Do not attempt to build a competitive team around it. You will find it constantly outmaneuvered by faster threats or walled by specialized defensive cores that human players utilize effectively.

With the upcoming release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Urshifu's role may shift entirely depending on the battle mechanics introduced in the Kalos region.

If Mega Evolution returns as the central mechanic and Terastallization is removed, Urshifu will lose the ability to change its defensive typing. This will make its base weaknesses, particularly to Fairy and Flying, much more exploitable in the new environment.

However, if the game retains a heavy focus on single-player boss fights similar to Noble Pokémon in Legends: Arceus, Urshifu's guaranteed critical hits will likely remain a top-tier asset for story progression.

Do not use Urshifu if your team needs a reliable pivot or a special defensive wall. It cannot take special hits, and sending it into a special attacker is a guaranteed knockout.

You should also avoid it if you are playing formats where multi-hit moves are punished by abilities like Rough Skin or items like Rocky Helmet, as Rapid Strike will destroy its own HP bar.

• Iron Hands: A vastly superior Fighting-type for Tera Raids, offering much better overall bulk and immediate recovery with Drain Punch.
• Palafin: If you need a heavy-hitting physical Water-type, Palafin provides better priority and raw stats after transforming.
• Annihilape: Offers superior survivability and snowballing potential with Rage Fist for long, drawn-out PvE battles.
