Poison Type: Weaknesses & Counters

The Poison type is a unique and strategic element in the Pokémon world, often associated with status conditions that slowly drain an opponent's health. While formidable, these Pokémon have specific vulnerabilities that a skilled trainer can exploit. Understanding these weaknesses is the first step to dismantling a toxic threat.

Offensively, Poison-type moves are not known for their wide coverage, but defensively, the type shines. However, it has two key weaknesses: Ground and Psychic. A powerful Ground-type move like Earthquake can metaphorically 'bury' the toxins, while a Psychic-type attack like Psychic can overpower the biological nature of poison with sheer mental force.

To effectively counter a Poison-type Pokémon, using a strong attacker from one of its weak types is the best strategy. For example, a Pokémon like Excadrill or Garchomp can deliver devastating Ground-type blows. Similarly, Psychic powerhouses such as Alakazam or Espeon can quickly overwhelm most Poison-type opponents.

Resistances and Immunities: The Other Side of the Coin

While it's crucial to know their weaknesses, a complete strategy also involves understanding what Poison-types are strong against. They resist Fighting, Bug, Grass, Fairy, and even other Poison-type moves. This makes them excellent switch-ins against common threats, particularly the powerful Fairy type.

Furthermore, one of the most important interactions to remember is the Steel type's complete immunity to Poison-type attacks. A Pokémon like Metagross or Aegislash can enter a battle against a Poison-type without any fear of taking damage from their STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) moves, making them the ultimate defensive wall.

Dual-typing can alter these matchups significantly. A Poison/Flying Pokémon like Crobat loses its weakness to Ground but gains vulnerabilities to Electric, Ice, and Rock. Always consider the Pokémon's full typing before choosing your counter.
