Is Dialga Good?

Dialga is highly situational in Scarlet and Violet Ubers, currently sitting at a low 1.2% usage rate. While its unique typing makes it a solid Stealth Rock setter and Trick Room enabler, it struggles heavily against dominant meta threats like Koraidon and Ho-Oh.

Dialga offers unique utility for specific team archetypes but falls short as a splashable staple in the current Ubers metagame.

In the Scarlet and Violet Ubers tier, Dialga occupies a highly specific niche, reflected by its low 1.2% usage rate. It is no longer the dominant offensive powerhouse it was in past generations.

Instead, Dialga functions primarily as a dedicated utility lead and enabler for slow, bulky offense teams. Its unique Dragon and Steel typing grants it crucial resistances, allowing it to survive initial hits from many special attackers.

Dialga relies on its Pressure ability to stall out low-PP moves from opposing walls, though Telepathy sees use in double battle formats. Its primary competitive role revolves around setting up Stealth Rock and establishing speed control via Trick Room, rather than attempting to sweep outright.

Dialga's most effective set in the current meta prioritizes utility over raw damage. Equipping a Mental Herb is critical for this role.

The Mental Herb ensures Dialga can bypass fast Taunt users and successfully set up Stealth Rock or Trick Room. Once hazards and speed control are established, Dialga can utilize Draco Meteor for immediate, heavy STAB damage before switching out.

Offensive and Pivot Options

For players leaning into an offensive pivot role, an Eject Pack paired with Draco Meteor creates excellent momentum. The stat drop from Draco Meteor forces Dialga to switch, safely bringing in a Trick Room abuser.

Alternatively, Choice Specs or a Life Orb can be used to turn Dialga into a specialized wallbreaker. These sets rely on Earth Power and Flash Cannon to heavily damage opposing Steel and Fairy types.

Dialga cannot function effectively in a vacuum. It requires specific teammates to capitalize on the utility it provides, particularly when running Trick Room.

Calyrex-Ice is arguably Dialga's best partner. Dialga sets up Trick Room and uses Steel Beam to deal massive damage while simultaneously knocking itself out. This creates a safe, free switch for Calyrex-Ice to enter the field and begin sweeping under Trick Room conditions.

Hatterene is another excellent teammate. Its Magic Bounce ability deters opposing hazard setters and Taunt users, keeping Dialga's side of the field clean.

Other strong partners include Kyogre, Arceus, and Lunala. Kyogre provides immediate offensive pressure and rain to mitigate Fire-type attacks aimed at Dialga's teammates, while Arceus and Lunala serve as secondary win conditions if the Trick Room strategy fails.

Dialga excels when positioned against passive leads or teams that lack immediate, overwhelming physical pressure. Its natural bulk allows it to comfortably set Stealth Rock against many defensive Pokémon.

When utilizing Dragon Tail, Dialga can disrupt setup sweepers and force unfavorable switches, racking up hazard damage in the process. This phasing utility is invaluable for breaking down defensive cores.

The inclusion of Earth Power in its movepool allows Dialga to heavily punish opposing Steel-types that attempt to wall its Dragon STAB. Flash Cannon provides a reliable, drawback-free option to pressure Fairy-types that try to switch into a predicted Draco Meteor.

Dialga's low usage rate is directly tied to its abysmal matchups against two of the most dominant Pokémon in the Ubers tier: Koraidon and Ho-Oh.

Koraidon easily outspeeds Dialga and threatens an immediate OHKO with its overwhelmingly powerful Fighting-type STAB attacks. Dialga has virtually no counterplay against Koraidon unless Trick Room is already active.

Ho-Oh presents a different but equally problematic challenge. Ho-Oh's massive special bulk allows it to easily absorb Draco Meteor and Flash Cannon. It can then threaten Dialga with burns or heavy damage, completely walling Dialga's standard sets.

Furthermore, Dialga suffers from a severe lack of reliable recovery. Being forced to rely on Rest makes it incredibly passive and vulnerable to being set up on, limiting its ability to function as a long-term defensive wall against strong Ground and Fighting attackers.

You should avoid using Dialga if your team is highly susceptible to fast Fighting or Ground-type attackers. If your strategy relies on fast, hyper-offensive momentum, Dialga's low speed and reliance on Trick Room will actively hinder your game plan.

Do not slot Dialga onto a team simply because you need a Dragon-type; its defensive profile is far too specific.

If you need a more reliable and splashable utility setter or bulky win condition, Arceus is a vastly superior alternative. Arceus offers reliable recovery, better speed, and extreme versatility, fitting onto almost any team archetype without the severe drawbacks that hold Dialga back.
