Is Hoopa Good?

Situationally good. In Scarlet and Violet's PU tier, Hoopa acts as a devastating special wallbreaker or Choice Scarf revenge killer. While its massive Special Attack and Special Defense let it tear through slower teams, its abysmal physical bulk and double 4x weaknesses to Ghost and Dark make it extremely fragile against physical attackers.

Hoopa trades physical survivability for immense special breaking power, demanding careful positioning to succeed.

Strengths

• Massive Special Attack stat melts unresisted targets.
• Deep special movepool provides excellent coverage against most types.
• Trick completely cripples defensive walls when holding Choice items.
• High Special Defense allows it to pivot into weak special attacks safely.

• Extremely vulnerable to physical attacks due to a pitiful Defense stat.
• Crippling 4x weaknesses to Ghost and Dark types.
• Requires a Choice Scarf to consistently outspeed common offensive threats.
• The Magician ability is highly situational and rarely impacts competitive matches.

In the current Scarlet and Violet PU tier, Hoopa occupies a highly polarized niche. It is the definition of a glass cannon on the physical side, while acting as a special behemoth. You do not pick Hoopa for a balanced, safe game plan; you pick it to punch massive holes in the opponent's defensive core.

Its role is strictly defined by its item. As a Special Wallbreaker equipped with Choice Specs or a Life Orb, it leverages its massive Special Attack to force switches. Very few Pokémon in the PU tier can comfortably switch into its STAB moves.

Alternatively, it functions as a potent revenge killer when holding a Choice Scarf. This patches up its mediocre Speed stat, allowing it to surprise faster threats. Its Magician ability is largely an afterthought in these formats, as Hoopa rarely wants to lose its primary item to steal a random one from the opponent.

The Choice Scarf Sweeper

This is arguably Hoopa's most reliable set in PU. The Choice Scarf allows it to outpace the majority of the unboosted metagame, turning it into a terrifying late-game cleaner.

• Shadow Ball: Your primary, reliable STAB option with excellent neutral coverage.
• Psychic or Psyshock: Psychic offers maximum base power, while Psyshock is crucial for hitting special walls on their weaker physical Defense.
• Focus Blast: Absolutely mandatory coverage to hit the Dark-types that are immune to its Psychic STAB.
• Trick: The ultimate utility move. Use Trick to lock a defensive wall into a single status move, stealing their Leftovers or Heavy-Duty Boots in the process.

The Assault Vest Pivot

If your team struggles against special attackers, an Assault Vest set capitalizes on Hoopa's naturally high Special Defense. This set allows it to trade blows efficiently.

• Psychic Noise: An incredible utility attack introduced in Scarlet/Violet that prevents the target from healing, shutting down recovery-reliant walls.
• Thunderbolt: Essential coverage for hitting bulky Water and Flying types.
• Grass Knot: Punishes heavy Ground and Rock types that might try to switch in.
• Shadow Ball: Mandatory Ghost STAB.

Hoopa excels when paired with teammates that can cover its glaring physical weaknesses and set up entry hazards. Hazards are crucial because they turn Hoopa's 2HKOs into guaranteed OHKOs.

Rhydon and Coalossal are premier partners. They provide the physical bulk Hoopa desperately lacks, easily absorbing the physical attacks aimed at it. In return, Hoopa effortlessly handles the special attackers that threaten them.

Offensive synergy is equally important. Floatzel and Galvantula apply immense fast pressure. Galvantula can set Sticky Web, which completely negates Hoopa's average Speed issue, allowing you to run a Life Orb or Choice Specs instead of a Choice Scarf for maximum damage.

Finally, Shaymin forms a devastating special attacking core with Hoopa. They share different checks, meaning one can often wear down the opposing team's special walls, allowing the other to clean up late-game.

Hoopa's weaknesses are catastrophic. Its base physical Defense is so low that even resisted physical hits deal massive damage. Any physical attacker with a priority move can bypass its Choice Scarf and threaten an instant KO.

The double 4x weaknesses to Ghost and Dark are its biggest downfall. Wo-Chien is a nightmare matchup; it easily absorbs Hoopa's STAB moves and threatens massive damage, forcing Hoopa to rely on landing an inaccurate Focus Blast.

Bombirdier and Grimmsnarl also completely shut it down. They carry super-effective Dark-type STAB and can easily pivot into its Psychic attacks. Grimmsnarl can also use priority status moves to cripple Hoopa before it can act.

Physical wallbreakers like Heracross and Typhlosion-Hisui will obliterate Hoopa. Typhlosion-Hisui, in particular, outspeeds non-Scarf variants and deletes Hoopa with its Ghost-type STAB. Similarly, Qwilfish-Hisui easily tanks hits with an Eviolite and retaliates with lethal physical Dark-type attacks.

Do not draft Hoopa if your team lacks sturdy physical walls. If your defensive core cannot pivot into strong physical attacks, Hoopa will become a massive liability, bleeding momentum every time it is forced onto the field.

Avoid using Hoopa if the opponent's team is heavily stacked with fast Dark-types or priority users. In these matchups, Hoopa will struggle to find safe entry points and will often be forced out immediately, making it dead weight.

If you need a more reliable, physically defensive Psychic-type pivot, consider alternatives that don't carry double 4x weaknesses. Hoopa is an offensive tool first and foremost; treating it as a standard defensive wall will quickly lead to defeat.
