Is Ledian Good?

Is Ledian Good?

Ledian (Competitive & In-Game)

No, Ledian is not good. In both casual playthroughs and competitive PvP, it suffers from an abysmal Attack stat that completely wastes its Iron Fist ability. While it possesses decent Special Defense and Speed, its terrible Bug/Flying typing and inability to deal meaningful damage make it unviable in almost every situation.

Verdict

Ledian is a tragic case of decent utility moves trapped on a Pokémon with no offensive threat and fragile physical bulk.

Rating 1.5/10 · Tier Untiered / Niche Playthrough · Role : Dual Screener / Fast Utility Pivot

Strengths

  • High base Special Defense allows it to tank weak special hits.
  • Access to a deep utility movepool including Reflect, Light Screen, Tailwind, and Encore.
  • Fast enough to outspeed many unboosted early-game story opponents.

Weaknesses

  • Catastrophically low physical Attack renders its Iron Fist ability completely useless.
  • Bug/Flying typing brings a crippling 4x weakness to Rock and Stealth Rock.
  • Non-existent physical Defense means it folds instantly to neutral physical attacks.
  • Lacks the offensive pressure to prevent opponents from setting up freely.

Tier & Role: The Ultimate Utility Trap

Ledian occupies the lowest possible tiers in any serious competitive format it touches. It is entirely absent from modern Scarlet and Violet ranked usage statistics. Its designated role is theoretically a fast utility pivot or dual screener. It has access to incredible support moves like Light Screen, Reflect, Tailwind, Encore, and U-turn.

However, Ledian fails at this role because it projects zero offensive threat. When Ledian is on the field, the opponent knows they will not take meaningful damage. This allows enemy sweepers to use Ledian as setup fodder, boosting their stats with Swords Dance or Dragon Dance without fear of retaliation.

While its Special Defense is respectable, its HP and physical Defense are abysmal. A dedicated utility Pokémon needs to survive hits to do its job. Ledian cannot survive any strong physical attack, meaning its window to set up screens or Tailwind is incredibly narrow. You are often sacrificing a team slot just to get one Light Screen up before fainting.

The Iron Fist Illusion: Sets & Trap Builds

Game Freak gave Ledian the Iron Fist ability, which boosts the power of punching moves by 20%. Coupled with a movepool that includes Mach Punch, Drain Punch, Thunder Punch, and Ice Punch, newer players often try to build Ledian as a physical attacker. This is a massive trap.

Ledian's base Attack is shockingly low. Even with an Adamant nature, maximum Attack investment, and the Iron Fist boost, a super-effective punch from Ledian will routinely fail to knock out standard story NPCs, let alone competitive targets. The math simply does not support physical Ledian.

  • Optimal Setup (If Forced): Focus entirely on utility.
  • Item: Heavy-Duty Boots (mandatory to survive Stealth Rock) or Light Clay (for longer screens).
  • Ability: Early Bird (Swarm and Iron Fist are useless on utility sets).
  • Moves: Reflect, Light Screen, U-turn, Roost / Encore.

If you absolutely must attack during a playthrough, completely ignore Iron Fist. Run a Special attacking set utilizing Bug Buzz and Air Slash, as its Special Attack, while still very poor, is marginally better than its physical Attack.

In-Game Playthroughs & Legends Z-A Context

In casual playthroughs, such as the Scarlet and Violet Teal Mask DLC where it appears early, Ledian is a temporary crutch. It evolves very early at level 18, giving it a brief window where its fully-evolved stats outpace unevolved early-route Pokémon. During this phase, it can carry you through the first few gyms using fast utility and STAB moves.

By level 25, the game scales past it. Enemy Pokémon will start surviving its hits and knocking it out in return. At this point, keeping Ledian on your team is a self-imposed challenge. It cannot contribute meaningfully to late-game Boss fights, Elite Four battles, or Tera Raids.

Looking ahead to Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Ledian's viability heavily depends on the potential return of Mega Evolution. Unless it receives a Mega form that drastically redistributes its stats to match its Iron Fist ability, it will remain a bottom-tier Pokédex filler. Current modern mechanics do not favor it.

Honest Weaknesses & Matchups

Ledian's Bug/Flying typing is historically awful for defense. A 4x weakness to Rock means Stealth Rock strips half its maximum health the moment it switches in. Without Heavy-Duty Boots, Ledian cannot function as a pivot. It is also weak to common offensive types like Flying, Fire, Electric, and Ice.

It loses every direct physical matchup. Any neutral physical hit from a fully evolved Pokémon—even a resisted Fighting or Grass move from a strong attacker—can severely dent or OHKO it due to its paper-thin Defense. It cannot switch into attacks to save its teammates.

The few matchups Ledian "wins" are against weak, passive special attackers. Thanks to its high Special Defense and access to Roost, it can stall out unboosted special hits from defensive Pokémon. It can also trap slow setup sweepers into repeating non-damaging moves by using Encore, forcing a switch and giving you momentum via U-turn.

To Avoid If... & Better Alternatives

Do not use Ledian if you need a reliable damage dealer, a physical wall, or a late-game sweeper. It will severely disappoint you in all offensive roles. Avoid bringing it to any fight where the opponent leads with a fast physical attacker or a Rock-type.

There are vastly superior Bug-types available in modern generations that fulfill similar or better roles.

  • If you want a fast utility Bug-type: Ribombee is vastly superior. It is faster, hits much harder with its Fairy/Bug STAB, and provides incredible team support with Sticky Web.
  • If you want an early-game Bug physical attacker: Lokix (in Scarlet/Violet) offers immediate, massive physical damage thanks to its Tinted Lens ability and First Impression.
  • If you want a Flying-type pivot: Corviknight or even Scyther perform the pivoting role infinitely better, possessing actual bulk and offensive presence.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ledian

Is Ledian better than Ariados?

Ariados is generally better. While Ledian is much faster and has better Special Defense, Ariados actually possesses the Attack stat necessary to deal damage. Ariados also offers superior utility with Sticky Web and Toxic Thread, making it a more impactful lead than Ledian.

What is the best moveset for Ledian?

The most optimal moveset ignores its Iron Fist ability entirely and focuses on utility. Run Heavy-Duty Boots with Light Screen, Reflect, U-turn, and Encore or Roost. This allows Ledian to set up defenses for the team and pivot out quickly.

Why is Ledian's Attack stat so low despite Iron Fist?

Ledian was introduced in Generation 2, long before abilities existed, and was designed as a special defensive utility Bug. When it received Iron Fist in Generation 4, its base stats were never updated to match the ability, leaving it with a severe disconnect between its design and its actual numbers.

Can Ledian be used in Scarlet and Violet PvP?

Absolutely not. Ledian lacks the stats to survive the extreme power creep of Generation 9. It cannot deal damage, cannot survive physical hits, and is entirely outclassed by other screen setters like Grimmsnarl or Alolan Ninetales.
