Persian (In-Game & PvP)
Situationally good for early-game story progression and farming Pokédollars, but terrible elsewhere. In late-game PvE or competitive PvP,
Persian is completely unviable due to abysmal offensive stats and extreme frailty. While its Speed and Technician ability provide early utility, it is quickly outclassed.
Verdict
Persian is a fast but incredibly weak Normal-type that should be boxed once you reach the mid-game.

Tier & Role: An Early-Game Placeholder
Persian belongs firmly in the lower tiers of in-game playthroughs. While its evolution from
Meowth happens early enough to give you a temporary power spike, that advantage vanishes quickly.
Its primary role is an early-game fast sweeper. With a naturally high Speed stat, it almost always guarantees the first strike against wild Pokémon and early Gym Leaders.
If you are playing through Scarlet and Violet or planning a team for Pokémon Legends: Z-A,
Persian serves best as a temporary placeholder. It lacks the raw stats to function as a dedicated physical attacker once opposing teams fully evolve.
The Technician Advantage
To get any value out of
Persian, you must run the Technician ability. This boosts moves with a base power of 60 or less by a massive 50%.
This turns weak early-game attacks into decent damage dealers. Fake Out becomes a reliable free hit, and Bite offers essential flinch chances against slower targets.
Without Technician,
Persian cannot secure knockouts. Its base Attack is simply too low to rely on standard Normal-type STAB moves without a modifier.
Best Uses & Favorable Matchups
Persian shines brightest when used as a utility Pokémon for farming resources. The move Pay Day is its most defining trait for story mode.
Spamming Pay Day against wild Pokémon or repeatable trainer battles yields a steady stream of Pokédollars. This is especially useful in the early hours of any mainline game where funds for Poké Balls and Potions are tight.
Once you acquire the Amulet Coin, pairing it with
Persian maximizes your early financial gains. However, this utility does not translate to major boss battles.
In-Game Matchups It Wins
During a playthrough,
Persian reliably handles specific archetypes before the mid-game difficulty spike hits.
- Frail Ghost-types: A Technician-boosted Bite outspeeds and heavily damages early-game Ghosts who otherwise wall Normal-types.
- Slow Psychic-types: Its natural Speed allows it to flinch slower Psychic opponents safely using Bite.
- Early Route Bugs and Birds: Fake Out provides free chip damage to easily finish off low-HP encounters.
It acts as an excellent cleaner for weakened teams in the first 20 hours of a game. Just do not expect it to sweep full teams on its own.
Weaknesses: Why It Falls Off Hard
Persian suffers from a catastrophic lack of physical power. Its base Attack stat is unacceptably low for a fully evolved physical attacker.
By the time you face the sixth or seventh Gym Leader,
Persian will fail to knock out opponents even with super-effective coverage moves. This turns it into dead weight on your roster.
Defensive Liabilities
Defensively,
Persian is incredibly fragile. It cannot survive neutral physical hits from heavily offensive Pokémon.
- Fighting-types: A single Close Combat or Mach Punch will instantly knock it out, ignoring its Speed advantage.
- Steel and Rock-types:
Persian lacks the raw power to break through high Defense stats, making it completely useless against these types. - Intimidate users: Any Attack drop renders
Persian completely incapable of dealing meaningful damage.
Its reliance on the Normal typing also means it rarely hits for super-effective damage with its Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB) moves. You are forced to rely on weak coverage options.
In Scarlet and Violet, Terastallization does not save it. Burning a Tera charge on
Persian is a massive waste of resources compared to using it on a true sweeper.
Avoid If... & Superior Alternatives
You should entirely avoid
Persian if you are building a team for the late-game Elite Four, high-level Tera Raids, or any form of competitive PvP.
In Scarlet and Violet ranked battles,
Persian is completely unviable. It lacks the damage output to threaten the current meta and gets easily swept by priority moves or bulky setup sweepers.
Bringing
Persian to a 5-Star or 6-Star Tera Raid is an active detriment to your team. It will die repeatedly and drain the timer.
Better Normal-Type Alternatives
If you need a fast Normal-type physical attacker, there are significantly better options available in modern generations.
Maushold: In Scarlet and Violet,
Maushold offers Population Bomb, which deals vastly more damage than anything
Persian can output while holding a Loaded Dice.
Staraptor: Provides Intimidate, a much higher Attack stat, and excellent Flying-type coverage for story playthroughs.
Snorlax: If you want a Normal-type for Legends: Z-A,
Snorlax offers incredible bulk and actual sweeping potential with Curse.
Box
Persian as soon as your starter reaches its final evolution. It is a stepping stone, not a permanent team member.

Frequently Asked Questions About Persian
Is Persian better than Alolan Persian?
No. Alolan Persian is significantly better due to its Dark typing, Fur Coat ability, and access to Parting Shot. Fur Coat doubles its physical Defense, making Alolan Persian a viable fast pivot, whereas regular Persian is just a weak attacker.
What is the best moveset for Persian in story mode?
The best in-game moveset relies on the Technician ability. Run Fake Out for free priority damage, Bite for Dark-type coverage and flinches, Pay Day for farming money, and U-turn to pivot out of bad matchups.
Can Persian be used in Scarlet and Violet Tera Raids?
Absolutely not. Persian lacks both the defensive bulk to survive raid boss attacks and the offensive stats to break through raid shields. Bringing Persian to a high-level Tera Raid will actively sabotage your team.
Does Persian have any competitive value in VGC?
Persian sees zero usage in serious VGC formats. While it has Fake Out and high Speed, it is completely outclassed by Incineroar and Rillaboom, who offer better typing, bulk, and superior utility moves.
