Unown (Combat & In-Game)
No,
Unown is completely unviable in every combat format. It suffers from abysmal base stats and a movepool restricted entirely to a single attack: Hidden Power. You cannot use it for competitive PvP or standard playthroughs. Its only legitimate purpose is serving as a collectible for completionists hunting its 28 alphabet forms.
Verdict
Unown is a collectible alphabet disguised as a Pokémon, meant to stay permanently in your PC boxes.

Tier & Role: The Ultimate Gimmick
Unown does not hold a competitive tier. It is entirely absent from Smogon's Scarlet and Violet formats because it lacks the programming to exist in the base games. Even in formats where it is legally playable, such as Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, it sits firmly at the absolute bottom of the Untiered bracket.
You cannot assign a traditional role like sweeper, wall, or pivot to a Pokémon that fails at basic survival.
Unown exists purely as a gimmick. Its sole defining trait is its connection to ancient ruins and its 28 distinct alphabet forms.
Bringing
Unown into any serious battle is an intentional handicap. It provides zero defensive utility, cannot set up entry hazards, cannot clear them, and exerts zero offensive pressure. It is a box trophy, not a team member.
Meilleurs usages: The Legends Arceus Blueprint
Game Freak finally found a valid use for
Unown in Pokémon Legends:
Arceus. Instead of forcing it into random grass encounters where players would ignore it, they repurposed the alphabet into a region-wide scavenger hunt.
You track down 28 specific
Unown hidden across the Hisui region. One hangs off a
Magikarp statue in Jubilife Village; another sits precariously on a volcano in the Cobalt Coastlands. This format perfectly aligns with
Unown's lore.
Expectations for Legends: Z-A
If Pokémon Legends: Z-A integrates
Unown into Lumiose City, expect a similar urban hide-and-seek mechanic. Hunting these forms across a dense cityscape provides legitimate gameplay value. Attempting to use them against a Mega Evolution in Z-A, however, will result in immediate defeat.
Matchups & Battle Scenarios (Or Lack Thereof)
Unown wins no matchups. Even with a super-effective Hidden Power, it lacks the Special Attack stat to secure one-hit knockouts against anything but the frailest early-route encounters.
- Against 4x Weaknesses: If you roll Hidden Power Water and face a
Geodude, you might secure a knockout. However, if the
Geodude survives thanks to Sturdy,
Unown will instantly faint to a retaliatory Rock Throw. - Against Setup Sweepers:
Unown is setup fodder. Any opponent with Swords Dance or Dragon Dance will use
Unown's turn to boost their stats for free, resulting in your entire team getting swept. - Against Dark-types: If your
Unown happens to have a Psychic-type Hidden Power, you are completely walled by any Dark-type Pokémon. You cannot switch moves, meaning you must forfeit the matchup immediately.
Faiblesses (Honnête): Why You Must Avoid It
Everything outspeeds it. Everything out-damages it.
Unown's base stats are catastrophically low across the board. It has no bulk to survive physical or special hits, and its speed tier leaves it vulnerable to almost every unboosted attacker in the game.
The Levitate ability provides an immunity to Ground-type moves, Spikes, and Toxic Spikes. While this is objectively a good ability, it is entirely wasted on
Unown. Dodging an Earthquake means nothing when a neutral hit from a weak Tackle or Quick Attack still removes half of its health bar.
Furthermore,
Unown cannot hold an Eviolite because it does not evolve. You cannot patch its defensive flaws with items. Choice Specs can boost its damage slightly, but locking a Pokémon into its only move while it still fails to secure KOs is a waste of a vital held item.
À éviter si… & Better Alternatives
Do not use
Unown if you intend to win battles, progress through a story campaign efficiently, or play any form of PvP. It is a dead slot on your roster that forces the rest of your team to fight a 5v6 battle.
- Alternative 1 -
Sigilyph: If you want a mystical, ancient-looking Psychic/Flying type, use
Sigilyph. It boasts the incredible Magic Guard ability, high Speed, and a massive movepool including Roost, Psychic, and Heat Wave. - Alternative 2 -
Bronzong: For a Levitate user with actual ancient lore,
Bronzong is vastly superior. It provides immense defensive utility, sets up Stealth Rock, and deals heavy damage with Gyro Ball. - Alternative 3 -
Azelf: If you need a hyper-offensive Psychic-type that fits the mystical lake guardian lore,
Azelf offers blistering Speed, massive offenses, and utility moves like Taunt and Explosion.

Frequently Asked Questions About Unown
Is Unown better than Luvdisc?
No. Luvdisc has a high base Speed and can use Swift Swim alongside utility moves like Sweet Kiss, Charm, and Chilling Water. Unown is locked to a single 60 Base Power move. Luvdisc is terrible, but Unown is mechanically worse in every conceivable way.
Can Unown learn any move other than Hidden Power?
Absolutely not. Across all generations, Unown's movepool begins and ends with Hidden Power. It cannot use TMs, HMs, Move Tutors, or Egg Moves. This restriction is hardcoded into every game it appears in.
What happens to Unown in games where Hidden Power is removed?
In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Hidden Power was reprogrammed specifically for Unown to automatically change its type to match the opponent's weakness. In games like Sword and Shield or Scarlet and Violet, Unown simply wasn't included in the Pokédex to avoid the mechanical issue entirely.
Is it worth catching all 28 Unown forms?
Only for completionists. Catching all 28 forms in Legends: Arceus unlocks a completed Pokédex entry and spawns them in the Solaceon Ruins for shiny hunting. In older games, it unlocks minor side-quests, specific dialogue, or cosmetic seals.
