Is Wo-Chien Good?

Situationally good in lower tiers, but mostly underwhelming in high-level PvP. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's PU tier, Wo-Chien functions as a specialized special wall and utility pivot. While its Tablets of Ruin ability effectively cripples physical attackers, a terrible Grass/Dark typing leaves it highly vulnerable to common U-turn pivots.

Wo-Chien relies heavily on its ability to survive, but its typing makes it a momentum sink against experienced players.

Wo-Chien currently sits in the Smogon SV PU tier with an 8.3% usage rate. Despite its legendary status, its competitive viability is heavily bottlenecked by its typing.

It primarily functions as a mixed sponge and utility pivot. The defining trait of Wo-Chien is its signature ability, Tablets of Ruin. This ability automatically reduces the Attack stat of all other active Pokémon on the field by 25%.

Because of this, Wo-Chien can comfortably absorb physical hits that its base stats suggest it shouldn't. It forces physical attackers to rethink their strategy or risk losing momentum to its utility moves.

To maximize Wo-Chien's potential in PU, players rely on passive damage and disruption. The standard defensive set equips Leftovers or Heavy-Duty Boots to mitigate entry hazard chip damage.

The core movepool revolves around Leech Seed and Protect. This combination allows Wo-Chien to stall out opponents while slowly recovering its own health.

Alternatively, an offensive pivot set uses Choice Specs or an Assault Vest. This set relies on Leaf Storm for burst damage and Dark Pulse for consistent STAB.

You can also run an Eject Pack alongside Leaf Storm. This allows Wo-Chien to drop a massive attack, trigger the Special Attack drop, and immediately pivot out of danger.

Giga Drain is another option for the offensive set. It provides a way to stay healthy while applying pressure, though it lacks the raw power of Leaf Storm.

Wo-Chien excels when paired with teammates that cover its glaring weaknesses. Galarian Slowbro and Florges are exceptional partners in the PU tier.

Galarian Slowbro easily absorbs the Bug and Fighting-type attacks aimed at Wo-Chien. In return, Wo-Chien handles Ground-type threats for Slowbro.

Other excellent teammates include Cramorant and Rhydon. Cramorant provides hazard removal and a Ground immunity, while Rhydon offers a solid physical backbone.

Heracross also pairs well by threatening the Dark and Steel-types that try to wall Wo-Chien. Together, they form a robust core that dictates the pace of the match.

In terms of matchups, Wo-Chien thrives against passive walls. Ruination halves the target's HP, breaking down bulky opponents regardless of their defensive stats.

The biggest hurdle for Wo-Chien is its disastrous Grass/Dark typing. This combination yields a 4x weakness to Bug-type moves, making it immediate setup fodder for U-turn users.

Any fast Pokémon with U-turn can hit Wo-Chien for massive damage while maintaining switch advantage. Furthermore, it struggles heavily against Fighting-types, which bypass its Tablets of Ruin bulk with high-base-power STAB moves.

Florges stands out as a premier counter in the PU tier. Florges completely walls Wo-Chien's STAB attacks, shrugs off Knock Off, and threatens massive damage back.

Because Wo-Chien lacks reliable burst recovery, it is extremely prone to being worn down. Once its Leftovers are removed, it struggles to stay healthy throughout a long match.

Do not draft Wo-Chien if your team lacks a solid response to U-turn spam. It is a momentum sink against teams built around frequent pivoting.

You should also avoid it if you need a dedicated win condition. Wo-Chien is a facilitator and a staller, not a late-game sweeper.

If you need a reliable, bulky special wall in PU, consider Florges instead. Florges offers superior typing, reliable recovery, and cleric support, making it far less passive.
