Is Zacian Good?

Yes, Zacian is exceptionally good for in-game story progression and Tera Raid battles in Scarlet and Violet, but it lacks viability in standard serious competitive formats. For Scarlet and Violet playthroughs and post-game content, Zacian sits comfortably at the top of the in-game tier list. It functions exclusively as a hyper-offensive physical sweeper.

You bring this Pokémon into a battle to hit hard and fast, ending encounters before the AI can react. Its base stats are heavily skewed toward Attack and Speed, leaving little room for defensive utility roles.

The Fairy and Steel typing is arguably the best defensive combination in the franchise. It grants immunity to Poison and Dragon attacks while resisting a massive portion of the standard type chart.

However, do not expect to bring Zacian into serious ranked PvP. It lacks presence in standard competitive formats and should be treated strictly as a tool for clearing story content and offline challenges.

Where Zacian truly shines in the current Generation 9 landscape is within high-level Tera Raid battles. Its raw damage output makes farming Herba Mystica and upgrade materials significantly faster.

To maximize its potential in these PvE environments, you need a straightforward, damage-focused approach. The AI rarely uses complex strategies, allowing you to focus purely on stat-boosting and attacking.

Recommended PvE Raid Setup

• Hold Item: Rusted Sword (mandatory for Crowned form).
• Ability: Intrepid Sword.
• Key Moves: Behemoth Blade, Play Rough, Swords Dance, Sacred Sword.
• EV Spread: Maximize Attack and HP for raid survivability.

Behemoth Blade is your primary tool here. It deals massive consistent damage, especially after a Swords Dance setup.

Play Rough provides essential Fairy-type coverage against Dragon and Dark-type raid bosses. Sacred Sword ignores the target's stat changes, which is a lifesaver when a raid boss starts boosting its Defense.

If you are bringing Zacian forward from older games into Scarlet and Violet, you must understand the mechanical changes it suffered. Game Freak actively nerfed its core mechanics to balance its overwhelming presence.

The most significant change targets its signature ability, Intrepid Sword. Previously, this ability boosted Attack every time Zacian entered the field.

As of Generation 9, Intrepid Sword only activates once per battle. If you switch Zacian out and bring it back in, you will not get a second Attack boost.

Additionally, its base Attack stat in the Crowned form was reduced. While it remains a powerhouse for story mode, these nerfs make it far less flexible in prolonged battles where switching is necessary.

During a standard playthrough or post-game exploration, Zacian completely walls several common enemy types. Dragon, Dark, and Fighting-type NPCs stand almost no chance against its typing and speed.

It excels against late-game bosses who rely on Dragon-type heavy hitters. You can safely pivot Zacian into an Outrage or Draco Meteor, take zero damage, and retaliate with a boosted Play Rough.

Ideal Teammates

• Flying-types: To switch into Ground-type attacks aimed at Zacian.
• Water-types: To absorb and counter Fire-type threats.
• Screen Setters: Pokémon with Reflect or Light Screen to patch up its average Special Defense.

Because Zacian is entirely self-sufficient offensively, you only need teammates that cover its two primary weaknesses. A solid Water/Flying type like Gyarados makes for a perfect partner during the main campaign.

Despite its legendary status, Zacian is not invincible. Its biggest flaw is the absolute reliance on the Rusted Sword to achieve its Crowned form.

Because the item slot is permanently occupied, you cannot equip a Choice Band, Life Orb, or Heavy-Duty Boots. This lack of item flexibility makes its damage output predictable and leaves it vulnerable to entry hazards if you ever use it outside of standard single-player battles.

Defensively, its Special Defense is notably lower than its physical bulk. Strong special attackers using Fire or Ground moves can easily score a one-hit knockout if they manage to outspeed it.

Furthermore, the reliance on physical contact moves makes it susceptible to abilities like Flame Body or Rough Skin, which can slowly chip away at its health during long boss fights.

Do not use Zacian if you are looking to climb the serious competitive ranked ladder. As noted, it lacks viability in standard PvP formats and is often restricted or simply outclassed by more flexible meta threats.

You should also avoid bringing it to Tera Raids where the boss has a Fire or Ground Tera-type, or if the boss frequently uses Will-O-Wisp. A burned Zacian loses its offensive pressure entirely.

Recommended Alternatives

• Tinkaton: Shares the excellent Fairy/Steel typing but offers much better utility with moves like Knock Off and Thunder Wave for standard playthroughs.
• Flutter Mane: A vastly superior Fairy-type for modern competitive formats and special-attacking raid builds.
• Gholdengo: The premier Steel-type for both PvE farming and PvP, offering better immunities and item flexibility.

If you need utility or special damage, leave Zacian in the PC. It is a one-trick pony, albeit a very strong one.

With Pokémon Legends: Z-A on the horizon for 2025, players are already planning their transfer rosters. If Zacian is permitted early via Pokémon HOME, it will undoubtedly break the game's difficulty curve.

However, Legends games often alter battle mechanics, such as the Agile and Strong style system seen in Arceus. If a similar system returns, Zacian's high base Speed could allow it to string together multiple Agile style attacks.

Until we know the exact mechanical shifts in Z-A, Zacian remains a safe investment to keep leveled and hyper-trained in your HOME boxes. Its raw stats will always find a use in single-player campaigns.
