Is Zarude Good?

Yes, but it is highly situational. In Scarlet and Violet OU, Zarude is a niche physical attacker with a 0.7% usage rate. It leverages excellent bulk, Speed, and STAB Knock Off to pressure opponents, but its 4x weakness to Bug makes it massive U-turn bait against top-tier threats.

Zarude hits hard with Knock Off and Power Whip but struggles to survive in a metagame dominated by fast pivots and bulky Fighting-types.

Zarude currently sits in the Scarlet and Violet OU tier, though it hangs on the fringes with a mere 0.7% usage rate. This low presence directly reflects its highly situational nature in the current competitive metagame.

It functions primarily as an offensive pivot or a physical setup sweeper. Its base stats provide a solid foundation, offering enough natural bulk to survive neutral hits while maintaining high Attack and Speed to pressure the opponent.

However, its Grass/Dark typing is a massive double-edged sword. While it provides excellent offensive STAB coverage, it saddles Zarude with numerous weaknesses, most notably a devastating 4x vulnerability to Bug-type attacks.

Because U-turn is ubiquitous in OU, Zarude constantly risks taking massive damage just by being on the field. You have to play it carefully, constantly reading the opponent's momentum moves to avoid giving up free KOs.

To get the most out of Zarude, you need to capitalize on its offensive movepool. The most viable approach involves either setting up to break walls or acting as a fast revenge killer.

The Setup Sweeper Build

This set aims to break through defensive cores in the mid-to-late game.

• Moves: Swords Dance or Bulk Up, Knock Off, Power Whip, Trailblaze or Close Combat.
• Items: Heavy-Duty Boots or Life Orb.
• Ability: Leaf Guard.

Swords Dance provides a massive Attack boost, turning Power Whip into a devastating nuke. Bulk Up is a slower alternative that patches up its physical Defense while scaling its damage.

Knock Off is absolutely mandatory. It removes crucial items like Leftovers and Heavy-Duty Boots from switch-ins. Trailblaze can be used to boost Speed, ensuring Zarude outpaces faster threats after a single use.

The Choice Scarf Pivot

Alternatively, equipping a Choice Scarf turns Zarude into a fast revenge killer. This variant relies on its natural Speed and STAB moves to clean up weakened teams late in the game.

Close Combat is vital on this set to hit Dark and Steel types that resist its primary STABs. Heavy-Duty Boots can also be swapped in if you prefer a pivot that ignores entry hazards, though you sacrifice the immediate speed control.

Zarude cannot function alone. It demands specific team support to cover its glaring defensive holes and maximize its offensive pressure.

It pairs exceptionally well with Ground-type hazard removers like Great Tusk. Great Tusk can clear Stealth Rock and Spikes while aggressively checking the Fighting and Bug types that threaten Zarude.

Sun teams also offer a unique niche for Zarude. When paired with Ninetales, Zarude's Leaf Guard ability finally activates, granting it complete immunity to debilitating status conditions like burn and toxic.

In this sun environment, Walking Wake becomes an incredible offensive partner. Walking Wake abuses the harsh sunlight with its Water/Dragon typing, breaking down the physical walls that Zarude struggles against.

Defensively, Cresselia provides excellent support. It can absorb the Fighting-type attacks aimed at Zarude and provide safe entry via Lunar Dance. Ceruledge also forms a strong offensive core, absorbing Bug and Fire attacks while pressuring the opponent's Fairy types.

Despite its offensive strengths, Zarude is easily walled and countered by several top-tier threats in the SV OU metagame.

Zamazenta is perhaps its hardest counter. With massive physical bulk and a typing that resists Knock Off, Zamazenta easily tanks any hit and threatens an immediate OHKO with its Fighting-type STAB.

Dondozo also completely shuts down physical setup variants. It ignores Swords Dance boosts thanks to Unaware and can stall Zarude out, easily shrugging off hits if it Terastallizes to remove its Grass weakness.

Fast special attackers are a nightmare for Zarude. Iron Moth outspeeds non-Choice Scarf variants and easily scores an OHKO with its Fire or Poison STAB moves.

Similarly, Enamorus heavily pressures Zarude with its Fairy-type attacks. Even Darkrai, despite sharing the Dark typing, can outspeed and heavily damage Zarude before it can retaliate. Finally, Dragonite can easily absorb a Knock Off or Power Whip and use Zarude as setup fodder.

While its competitive viability is strictly niche, Zarude is an absolute monster for standard in-game playthroughs and PvE content.

In a casual setting, its high Attack and Speed allow it to sweep through most NPC trainers without taking a hit. You rarely need to worry about complex strategies; simply clicking Power Whip or Knock Off is usually enough to clear routes.

Its signature move, Jungle Healing, is incredibly useful in long gauntlets. It restores HP and cures status conditions for both Zarude and its ally, making it excellent for double battles.

Equipping a Sitrus Berry or Leftovers gives it enough passive recovery to sustain itself through multiple encounters without needing constant trips to the Pokémon Center. Synthesis is also a great option for immediate burst healing.

Looking ahead to future titles like Pokémon Legends: Z-A, if Zarude is transferable, its strong physical profile and self-sustain will likely make it a top-tier choice for story progression and boss fights.

In the early game, Zarude should primarily function as a scout and a disruptor. Lead with it to apply immediate pressure with Knock Off.

Removing Heavy-Duty Boots from opposing walls early on makes your hazard setters much more threatening. Do not commit to a Swords Dance or Bulk Up sweep too early, as you will likely be forced out by a faster threat.

Save your setup for the late game when counters like Zamazenta and Dondozo have been severely weakened or eliminated.

Once the opponent's fast threats like Enamorus and Iron Moth are dealt with, Zarude can safely use Trailblaze to boost its Speed. At +1 Speed and +2 Attack, very few Pokémon can survive a STAB Power Whip.

Always monitor the opponent's remaining roster for priority users. Dragonite, for instance, can easily halt a sweep with Extreme Speed if Zarude has taken too much chip damage.

Do not draft Zarude if your team lacks a solid switch-in for Bug-type attacks. The prevalence of U-turn means Zarude will constantly bleed momentum if you cannot punish the opponent for clicking it.

Avoid using it if you need a dedicated physical wall. While its bulk is decent, its typing leaves it vulnerable to too many common attacking types to act as a reliable defensive anchor.

Furthermore, if you are not running a Sun team or do not specifically need Jungle Healing, Leaf Guard is a completely dead ability that offers zero value.

If you need a fast Grass/Dark attacker but want more immediate speed and pivoting utility, consider faster Dark-type attackers or Grass-type pivots that have abilities providing immediate value upon switching in.
