The Taunt Evolution Mechanic Explained
Clobbopus requires a specific move-based trigger to evolve into
Grapploct. You must level up the Pokémon while it has the Dark-type move Taunt in its active four-slot moveset.
By default,
Clobbopus learns Taunt naturally at Level 35. If you keep it in your active party and let it reach this level, the game prompts you to learn the move. Accept it, overwrite an old move, and the evolution sequence begins immediately after the battle concludes.
Players wanting
Grapploct earlier can bypass this level requirement using Technical Records or Machines. In Pokémon Sword and Shield, apply TR37. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, use TM87. Once
Clobbopus learns Taunt via these items, a single Rare Candy or battle will trigger the evolution regardless of its current level.
Competitive Verdict: Is Grapploct Worth the Effort?
Grapploct earns a harsh 4.5/10 in standard competitive play. It functions almost exclusively as a niche trapper and physical wallbreaker in lower tiers like PU or ZU.
Its signature move, Octolock, prevents the target from switching while dropping their Defense and Special Defense by one stage each turn. This allows
Grapploct to trap passive defensive walls like
Toxapex,
Blissey, or
Dondozo, stall them out, and break through their bulk with physical strikes.
However,
Grapploct suffers from a base Speed of 42. It takes hits before it can act, and its pure Fighting typing leaves it vulnerable to common Flying, Psychic, and Fairy attacks. Without reliable recovery outside of Drain Punch, it gets easily revenge-killed by faster sweepers the moment its trapping target faints.
Optimal Builds and Movesets
If you decide to evolve
Clobbopus, maximizing its Hidden Ability, Technician, is the most viable path. Technician amplifies the power of moves with a base power of 60 or below by 50%.
Run an Adamant nature with maximum Attack and HP EVs. Equip an Assault Vest to patch up its Special Defense, or Leftovers if you plan to utilize Octolock for extended trapping sequences.
- Power-Up Punch: Boosted by Technician to 60 BP, providing a guaranteed Attack raise while dealing solid Fighting-type STAB damage.
- Aqua Jet: An essential Egg Move. Technician pushes this priority Water-type attack to 60 BP, compensating for
Grapploct’s abysmal Speed tier. - Drain Punch: Your primary STAB option for longevity, keeping
Grapploct healthy during prolonged exchanges. - Ice Punch or Sucker Punch: Essential coverage to hit Ghost, Flying, or Psychic types that resist Fighting moves.
Who Should Use Grapploct (Pros & Cons)
Grapploct fits best on bulky offense or semi-stall teams that need a dedicated answer to opposing stall cores. If your team struggles to break through regenerator pivots or unaware walls, Octolock provides a guaranteed method to force stat drops and secure a knockout.
Pros:
- Octolock is an unblockable trapping tool against slower, passive Pokémon.
- Technician-boosted Aqua Jet provides surprising priority damage against Fire, Rock, and Ground types.
- Access to reliable STAB recovery via Drain Punch.
Cons:
- Extremely slow, meaning it will take damage before executing its setup strategy.
- Pure Fighting typing is defensively mediocre, offering little utility outside of Dark, Bug, and Rock resistances.
- Completely shut down by Ghost types, which are immune to Octolock trapping and Fighting-type STAB.
Avoid using
Grapploct if you need a fast physical sweeper. Options like
Hawlucha or
Gallade perform that role far better. Reserve
Grapploct specifically for trapping and breaking walls.
Grapploct vs. Alternative Fighting-Type Wallbreakers
When evaluating
Grapploct for a team slot, it competes directly with other pure Fighting-types like
Machamp, Sirfetch'd, and
Conkeldurr. These alternatives generally outclass
Grapploct in raw damage output and immediate wallbreaking potential.
Conkeldurr boasts a massive base Attack stat and utilizes Guts to absorb status conditions, making it a superior choice for standard offensive roles. Sirfetch'd provides immediate burst damage with First Impression and Scrappy, allowing it to hit Ghost-types with Fighting moves.
Grapploct’s sole advantage over these titans is Octolock. If your strategy does not rely on trapping and systematically dismantling a specific defensive wall,
Grapploct will underperform compared to
Conkeldurr or Sirfetch'd. You select
Grapploct strictly for its utility as a trapper.
Evolution Troubleshooting and Common Mistakes
Players often encounter issues when trying to evolve
Clobbopus if they misunderstand the move-based trigger. Holding an Everstone will completely block the evolution, even if the Pokémon levels up while knowing Taunt. Always check the held item slot before grinding levels.
If you accidentally decline learning Taunt at Level 35, the evolution will not trigger. You must take
Clobbopus to the Move Reminder at any Pokémon Center or via the summary screen. Relearn Taunt for free, then level up
Clobbopus one more time via battle or Rare Candy.
Using the Let’s Go auto-battle feature in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will not trigger evolutions.
Clobbopus must gain the level-up through a traditional manual battle or by consuming an Exp. Candy to initiate the
Grapploct evolution screen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Clobbopus
At what level does Clobbopus evolve?
Clobbopus does not evolve at a specific level. It evolves when it levels up while knowing the move Taunt. It learns Taunt naturally at Level 35, but can evolve earlier if taught the move via a TM or TR.
Can I evolve Clobbopus using auto-battles?
No. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, leveling up via the Let's Go auto-battle feature will not trigger any evolution. You must level up Clobbopus in a standard manual battle or by using an Exp. Candy.
What happens if I forget to teach Clobbopus Taunt?
If you decline Taunt at Level 35, Clobbopus will remain in its base form. You can visit the Move Reminder menu from the Pokémon's summary screen to relearn Taunt, then level it up once more to evolve.
Is Grapploct a Water type?
Despite its octopus design and access to Water-type moves like Aqua Jet and Liquidation, Grapploct is a pure Fighting-type Pokémon. It does not receive a Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB) on Water attacks.
