Evolution Methods for Both Regional Forms
Evolving
Darumaka depends entirely on its regional form. The original Fire-type Unovan
Darumaka evolves into Unovan
Darmanitan simply by reaching level 35. You do not need any specific items, friendship levels, or time of day.
Galarian
Darumaka, introduced in Pokémon Sword and Shield, ditches the level requirement. This Ice-type variant evolves into Galarian
Darmanitan when exposed to an Ice Stone. You can trigger this evolution at level 1, though waiting to learn specific moves like Icicle Crash at level 36 can save you a Heart Scale or TR.

Unovan Darmanitan Competitive Verdict (7/10)
Unovan
Darmanitan operates as a pure physical wallbreaker. With a base 140 Attack stat and the Sheer Force ability, it removes secondary effects from moves like Flare Blitz and Rock Slide in exchange for a 30% power boost. Combine this with a Choice Band or Life Orb, and it easily 2HKOs physically defensive staples like
Toxapex or
Slowbro on a neutral hit.
However, this raw power comes with severe drawbacks. Flare Blitz recoil, combined with a weakness to Stealth Rock, drastically cuts its longevity on the field. Base 95 Speed leaves it outpaced by common offensive threats like
Garchomp and
Dragapult, forcing it into a hit-and-run playstyle.
- Pros: Unmatched raw Fire-type physical damage; U-turn provides excellent momentum; decent base 105 HP absorbs one neutral hit.
- Cons: Suicidal recoil damage; highly vulnerable to entry hazards; awkward Speed tier.
Galarian Darmanitan Competitive Verdict (9.5/10)
Galarian
Darmanitan is a completely different beast, functioning as a top-tier physical sweeper and revenge killer. Its signature ability, Gorilla Tactics, boosts its Attack by 50% but locks it into the first move selected. Stacking this with a Choice Scarf gives it a 1.5x multiplier to both Attack and Speed.
This combination proved too centralizing for standard Smogon OU play, resulting in a quick ban to the Ubers tier. A Choice Scarf Galarian
Darmanitan outspeeds the entire unboosted metagame, spamming STAB Icicle Crash, Flare Blitz for Steel-types, and U-turn to pivot out of bad matchups.
- Pros: Gorilla Tactics breaks the standard damage math; perfect offensive movepool (Icicle Crash, Flare Blitz, Earthquake, U-turn); instantly forces switches.
- Cons: Pure Ice typing offers terrible defensive utility; Stealth Rock weakness persists; locked into moves, requiring heavy prediction against Protect users.
The Zen Mode Gimmick Explained
Both forms possess a Hidden Ability called Zen Mode, which changes their form, stats, and typing when their HP drops below 50% at the end of a turn. Unovan Zen Mode shifts from a physical Fire-type to a slow, bulky Fire/Psychic special attacker. This requires a completely split EV spread and is universally considered unviable in competitive formats.
Galarian Zen Mode is significantly more dangerous. When its HP falls below half, it transforms into an Ice/Fire type, gaining massive boosts to Attack (base 160) and Speed (base 135). Players often use Substitute and Belly Drum alongside a Salac Berry to intentionally trigger this form.
Despite the high ceiling of Galarian Zen Mode, standard Gorilla Tactics remains the optimal choice for consistency. Relying on dropping below 50% HP in a metagame filled with priority moves like Mach Punch and Sucker Punch leaves Zen Mode
Darmanitan too vulnerable to revenge killing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Darumaka
Can you breed a Unovan Darumaka in Pokémon Sword and Shield?
Yes, but the parent Unovan Darmanitan or Darumaka must hold an Everstone during breeding. Without the Everstone, the Egg will hatch into a Galarian Darumaka, regardless of the parent's original region.
Where do I find an Ice Stone for Galarian Darumaka?
In Pokémon Sword and Shield, you can find an Ice Stone on Route 9, specifically in the water near the outer walls of Spikemuth. The Digging Duo in the Wild Area can also randomly excavate them.
Does Zen Mode Darmanitan revert to its standard form if healed?
Yes. If a Zen Mode Darmanitan receives healing that pushes its HP back above 50%, it will revert to its standard form at the end of that turn, losing its altered typing and stats.
Which nature is best for Darmanitan?
Jolly is the optimal nature for both Unovan and Galarian Darmanitan. Maximizing Speed is critical for base 95 Speed Pokémon to avoid being outsped and knocked out before they can utilize their massive Attack stats.
