How to Evolve Dratini

Dratini evolves into Dragonair simply by reaching level 30. To complete the line, Dragonair evolves into Dragonite at level 55. No evolutionary stones, trading, or friendship mechanics are required. You only need to accumulate Experience Points through battles, Exp. Candies, or Rare Candies.

Evolving Dratini is a straightforward leveling process, though it requires a significant time investment due to its slow growth rate. As a pseudo-legendary line, the EXP requirements are noticeably steeper than those of early-game encounters.

Dragonite is an exceptional physical attacker for story campaigns. While the grind to level 55 is tedious, its massive attack stat and deep movepool make it a reliable sweeper for late-game Gyms and the Elite Four.

Modern Pokémon titles provide massive shortcuts to bypass the tedious level 55 grind. In both Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, passive party EXP is always active, but you should actively farm EXP items to speed up the process.

1. Keep Dratini in your active party while exploring the overworld to soak up passive EXP.
2. Participate in high-star Tera Raid Battles (Scarlet/Violet) to farm Exp. Candies L and XL.
3. Feed the accumulated Exp. Candies directly to Dratini until it hits level 30.
4. Allow the evolution animation to play out to obtain Dragonair.
5. Repeat the candy feeding process until Dragonair reaches level 55 to secure Dragonite.

Using Rare Candies is optimal only for the final stretch from level 50 to 55. The EXP curve steepens drastically at the end, making flat level-ups far more valuable than raw EXP points.

The mobile game strips away levels entirely, relying on the standard Candy system. Dratini is a rare spawn, making candy accumulation the primary bottleneck for mobile players.

1. Catch Dratini to earn 3 Dratini Candy per catch.
2. Use Pinap Berries during encounters to double the catch yield to 6 candies.
3. Transfer duplicate Dratini to Professor Willow for 1 extra candy each.
4. Set Dratini as your Buddy Pokémon to earn 1 candy every 5 kilometers walked.
5. Spend 25 Dratini Candy to evolve it into Dragonair.
6. Spend 100 Dratini Candy to evolve Dragonair into Dragonite.

If you have Rare Candies from Raid Battles, you can convert them directly into Dratini Candy to skip the walking requirement entirely.

Even with a simple level-up requirement, players occasionally hit roadblocks. If your Dratini or Dragonair passes the required level without evolving, check these common issues.

• Holding an Everstone: If Dratini is holding this item, the evolution trigger is disabled. Remove the Everstone from its held items menu and level it up one more time.
• Accidental B-Button Press: Pressing the B button during the glowing evolution screen cancels the process. You must level up the Pokémon again to re-trigger the animation.
• Auto-Battle EXP Limits: In Scarlet and Violet, Pokémon will not evolve if they level up via the Let's Go auto-battle feature. You must trigger the level-up through a standard turn-based battle or by using an EXP item.

Level cap obedience issues tied to Gym Badges do not prevent evolution. Even if a traded Dratini ignores your commands in battle, it will still evolve normally upon reaching level 30.
