The Level 30 Evolution Trigger and EXP Math
Disclaimer: Pokedex.me is an unofficial Pokémon fan-site.
Flaaffy evolves into
Ampharos strictly by reaching level 30. There are no evolution stones, friendship thresholds, or time-of-day mechanics involved. The evolution screen triggers immediately after the battle or item usage that pushes
Flaaffy to level 30.
Flaaffy is in the Medium Slow experience group. This means it requires exactly 24,300 EXP points to reach level 30. Equipping a Lucky Egg boosts experience yields from wild battles and trainer encounters by 50%, significantly reducing the grinding time required.
In modern titles like Scarlet and Violet, the mandatory Exp. Share distributes experience to
Flaaffy even if it remains in your party without entering combat. Using EXP Candies or a Rare Candy to push
Flaaffy from level 29 to 30 triggers the evolution immediately. If you cancel the evolution by pressing 'B',
Flaaffy will attempt to evolve again at level 31.
Ampharos Competitive Verdict: 6.5/10 Bulky Pivot
Ampharos completely breaks the standard Electric-type mold. Unlike
Jolteon or
Raikou,
Ampharos functions as a slow wallbreaker and bulky pivot. We rate it a 6.5/10 for standard playthroughs and lower-tier competitive formats.
With a base 115 Special Attack and a 90/85/90 defensive stat spread, it takes neutral hits effectively and retaliates with heavy damage. However, a base 55 Speed means it will take damage before moving in almost every matchup. You must build your team around this lack of speed.
- Pros: Excellent Special Attack, access to Volt Switch for slow pivoting, reliable bulk that allows it to survive non-STAB Earthquake attacks.
- Cons: Outsped by 80% of the metagame, highly predictable Electric/Fighting movepool, vulnerable to common Ground-type physical attackers.
Ampharos is strictly for players running bulky offense or balance teams who need a slow pivot to bring in fragile sweepers safely. Hyper-offense players who rely on outspeeding threats to maintain momentum should avoid it entirely in favor of
Magnezone or Rotom-Wash.
Movepool Management: Do Not Delay Evolution
Many Pokémon benefit from delayed evolution to access powerful moves earlier, but
Flaaffy does not. Evolve it at level 30 immediately.
Flaaffy learns Discharge at level 29, just before evolving. Upon evolving at level 30,
Ampharos learns Thunder Punch, and the learnsets remain identical in pacing afterward.
Ampharos relies heavily on TMs to function competitively. Thunderbolt is mandatory for consistent STAB damage, as Discharge's 80 base power falls short against bulkier targets. Volt Switch enables its primary competitive role, allowing
Ampharos to absorb a hit and immediately switch out to a favorable matchup.
Focus Blast provides essential coverage against Rock and Steel types, though its 70% accuracy makes it a liability in high-stakes ladder matches. Hidden Power Ice (in Generations 2 through 7) or Tera Ice (in Generation 9) is strictly required. Without Ice-type coverage, Ground-types completely block Volt Switch and wall
Ampharos indefinitely.
The Mega Ampharos Factor (Generations 6 and 7)
Holding the Ampharosite allows
Ampharos to Mega Evolve, fundamentally changing its mechanical identity. It gains the secondary Dragon typing and the Mold Breaker ability. Mega
Ampharos boasts a massive base 165 Special Attack, turning it into a dedicated wallbreaker.
Mold Breaker is the primary reason to use Mega
Ampharos. This ability allows its Electric moves to hit Pokémon with Volt Absorb (like
Lanturn) or Motor Drive (like
Electivire), bypassing standard abilities that grant immunities. It also ignores Sturdy, allowing for guaranteed one-hit knockouts against full-health
Skarmory or
Forretress.
The trade-off is a speed drop to a dismal base 45. This makes Mega
Ampharos an exclusive fit for Trick Room teams, where its low speed allows it to move first. Outside of Trick Room, the added Dragon typing brings new weaknesses to Fairy, Ice, and Dragon attacks, making its slow speed heavily punishable by common metagame threats like
Garchomp or
Clefable.
Optimal Leveling Routes Across Generations
In Johto (Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, SoulSilver), the route south of Blackthorn City offers high-level Water and Flying types.
Flaaffy can easily farm
Gyarados and
Tentacruel here using Discharge to bridge the final gap to level 30.
In Kalos (X and Y), the Battle Chateau provides repeatable trainer battles. Using the Silver Writ of Invitation increases trainer levels, allowing
Flaaffy to gain rapid experience against audited opponents. This is much faster than farming wild encounters on Route 12.
In Paldea (Scarlet and Violet), farming Tera Raid Battles yields Exp. Candies M and L. Feeding just a few of these to
Flaaffy bypasses wild encounters entirely, completing the 24,300 EXP requirement in seconds. Alternatively, using the Let's Go auto-battle feature against Water-types in the West Province (Area Two) provides steady, risk-free farming without draining move PP.
