The Two-Step Evolution Path
Geodude requires a distinct two-step process to reach its final form. The first stage relies strictly on experience points. Geodude evolves into
Graveler upon reaching level 25. Players achieve this threshold through standard trainer battles, wild encounters, Rare Candies, or EXP Candies.
The second stage introduces a mechanical hurdle.
Graveler evolves into
Golem exclusively when traded to another player. The evolution sequence triggers immediately after the trade animation concludes. No specific held items are required to initiate this trade evolution.
Players must coordinate a return trade to use the newly evolved
Golem on their original save file. Holding an Everstone during the trade actively prevents the evolution sequence. Ensure the
Graveler holds no items to avoid accidental progression blocks.
The Legends: Arceus Exception
Pokémon Legends:
Arceus removed multiplayer trade restrictions for all Pokémon. In the Hisui region,
Graveler evolves into
Golem using a consumable item called the Linking Cord. Players apply the item directly from their satchel, triggering the evolution instantly.
Linking Cords drop randomly from space-time distortions across the Hisui map. Players can also purchase them directly at the Trading Post in Jubilife Village for 1,000 Merit Points. Completing Request 64, titled "Getting to Know Ghosts," guarantees one Linking Cord as a fixed reward.
This solo-evolution mechanic remains completely exclusive to Legends:
Arceus. Transferring a Hisuian
Graveler to Pokémon HOME and moving it into Scarlet or Violet reverts the evolution requirement back to the standard multiplayer trade.
Kantonian Golem Competitive Verdict (4/10)
Pokedex.me is an unofficial fan site, but our competitive analysis remains strictly objective. Kantonian
Golem operates primarily as a suicide lead or physical wall in lower competitive tiers like PU and NU. We rate its modern viability a 4/10.
Its primary strategic role relies heavily on the Sturdy ability.
Golem guarantees setting up Stealth Rock, surviving any single fatal hit from full HP. Following the hazard setup, it uses Explosion to deal massive physical damage and prevent the opponent from clearing the hazards with Rapid Spin.
- Pros: Excellent base 120 Attack and 130 Defense; Sturdy guarantees hazard setup; STAB Earthquake hits hard against grounded targets.
- Cons: Base 45 Speed makes it universally outsped; crippling 4x weaknesses to Water and Grass attacks; heavily outclassed by
Great Tusk and
Ting-Lu in higher tiers.
Golem fits hyper-offense teams needing a reliable hazard setter. It fails completely on balanced or stall teams due to its lack of reliable recovery and extreme vulnerability to common special attackers.
Alolan Geodude Evolution and Competitive Role (5/10)
Alolan
Geodude shares the exact same mechanical requirements: level 25 for Alolan
Graveler, and a multiplayer trade for Alolan
Golem. The regional variant swaps the Ground typing for Electric, fundamentally altering its competitive profile and damage output.
Alolan
Golem functions as a slow offensive wallbreaker or pivot. Its hidden ability, Galvanize, turns Normal-type moves into Electric-type moves and boosts their base power by 20%. This interaction makes its Explosion the strongest physical Electric-type attack in the game.
- Pros: Galvanize-boosted STAB Return and Explosion; Volt Switch provides slow pivoting to bring frail sweepers in safely; resists common Flying and Normal attacks.
- Cons: 4x weakness to Ground-type attacks; identical base 45 Speed; heavily reliant on prediction to avoid losing momentum against Ground-type switch-ins.
We rate Alolan
Golem a 5/10. It performs marginally better than its Kantonian counterpart due to the pivoting utility of Volt Switch, but still struggles against the omnipresence of Earthquake in standard competitive play.
Optimal Movesets for Golem
Running Kantonian
Golem requires a precise moveset to maximize its suicide lead potential. The standard competitive loadout includes Stealth Rock, Earthquake, Stone Edge, and Explosion. A Custap Berry serves as the optimal held item for this specific build.
When Sturdy activates and drops
Golem to 1 HP, the Custap Berry allows it to move first in the priority bracket on the following turn. This guarantees an Explosion before the opponent can secure the knockout. Maximum Effort Values (EVs) in Attack and Speed with an Adamant nature optimize the final damage output.
For Alolan
Golem, equipping an Assault Vest or Choice Band maximizes its wallbreaking capabilities. The moveset relies entirely on Return, Stone Edge, Earthquake, and Volt Switch. Maximum HP and Attack EVs allow it to tank neutral hits and retaliate with heavy Galvanize-boosted damage.
Trade Logistics and Safety Protocols
Trading
Graveler online carries inherent risks for solo players. Using the Global Trade System (GTS) often results in losing the Pokémon entirely, as random players rarely trade back the evolved form. Direct link trades remain the only secure method for evolution.
Players utilizing community Discord servers or Reddit forums should establish collateral before initiating the trade. Trading a shiny or legendary Pokémon as temporary insurance ensures the other party returns the newly evolved
Golem. Always confirm the trade partner's In-Game Name (IGN) before locking in the link code.
If playing on emulators or older hardware without Wi-Fi access, players must physically connect two consoles using a link cable. Alternatively, players using ROMs utilize external tools like PKHeX to trigger the trade evolution flag manually.

Frequently Asked Questions About Evolving Geodude
Can you evolve Graveler without trading in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl?
No. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, trading remains the only legitimate method to evolve Graveler into Golem. There are no Linking Cords or alternative evolution items available in these Generation 8 remakes.
What level does Alolan Geodude evolve?
Alolan Geodude evolves into Alolan Graveler exactly at level 25. This matches the level requirement of the standard Kantonian Geodude. Experience yield and leveling mechanics remain identical across both regional forms.
Does Graveler need to hold an item while trading to evolve?
No. Graveler evolves purely through the trade process itself. Holding any item will not affect the outcome, except for an Everstone, which actively prevents the evolution sequence from triggering.
Why didn't my Graveler evolve after trading?
If Graveler did not evolve after a successful trade, it was likely holding an Everstone. The Everstone is specifically programmed to halt all trade evolutions. Remove the item from Graveler and initiate the trade again.
