How to Evolve Gligar

The Evolution Method: Razor Fang and Nighttime

Evolving Gligar is a unique process that was introduced in Generation IV, two generations after Gligar itself first appeared. This evolution transforms the Fly Scorpion Pokémon into the fearsome Gliscor, a staple in many competitive teams thanks to its excellent typing and abilities.

To evolve Gligar, you need to fulfill two specific conditions simultaneously:

  1. Give Gligar a Razor Fang to hold. This is a special evolutionary item that is essential for the process. Without it, Gligar will not evolve, no matter how many levels it gains.
  2. Level up Gligar during the night. The time of day is crucial. Most Pokémon games define 'night' as the period from 8:00 PM to 3:59 AM. Leveling up Gligar via battle, a Rare Candy, or any other method within this time window while it's holding the Razor Fang will trigger its evolution into Gliscor.

Our Evolution Chain widget below visualizes this simple, yet specific, two-stage line.

Gligar's Evolution Essentials
  • Gligar evolves into Gliscor, a powerful Ground/Flying-type Pokémon.
  • The evolution requires Gligar to hold a specific item: the Razor Fang.
  • To trigger the evolution, you must level up Gligar during the in-game nighttime.

Where to Find the Razor Fang

The most challenging part of evolving Gligar is often finding the Razor Fang. Its location varies from game to game. Here’s a breakdown of where you can find this essential item:

  • Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum: Found on Route 224 and available for purchase at the Battle Park or Battle Frontier for Battle Points (BP).
  • HeartGold and SoulSilver: Can be purchased at the Battle Frontier for BP.
  • Black and White / Black 2 and White 2: Found in the Abundant Shrine. In B2W2, it's also on Route 13 and can be bought at the Pokémon World Tournament (PWT) or Battle Subway.
  • Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: Found on Route 214 and Route 224, in the Grand Underground, or can be purchased at the Battle Park.
  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus: Can be purchased from Simona's stall in Jubilife Village for Merit Points or found as a rare item in space-time distortions.
  • Scarlet and Violet (The Teal Mask DLC): Gligar and the Razor Fang are available in the land of Kitakami. The item can be found as a sparkling item in the Timeless Woods or occasionally be won at the Porto Marinada auction.

In games where Gligar is not available in the wild, you may need to trade it over before you can evolve it using a locally-sourced Razor Fang.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Gligar evolve in Pokémon Gold, Silver, or Crystal?

No. Gligar was introduced in Generation II, but its evolution, Gliscor, and the required Razor Fang item were not created until Generation IV (Diamond and Pearl). Therefore, it is impossible to evolve Gligar in any game prior to Generation IV.

Does it matter what level Gligar is when I try to evolve it?

Not at all! Gligar can evolve at any level, as long as it levels up while holding the Razor Fang at night. You could evolve a level 2 Gligar if you meet these conditions.
