How to Evolve Gligar

To evolve Gligar, give it a Razor Fang to hold and level it up exactly at night. In Legends-style games, simply use the Razor Fang on Gligar from your satchel during nighttime. The evolution triggers immediately once these two conditions overlap.

Gligar requires a specific item and time of day to evolve. Missing either condition prevents the process entirely.

• Required Item: Razor Fang.
• Required Time: In-game night.
• Trigger: Leveling up (mainline games) or item application (Legends).

Many players prefer keeping Gligar unevolved for competitive play. Equipped with an Eviolite, Gligar becomes a premier physical wall in the NU tier, utilizing Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Toxic to wear down opponents before pivoting with U-turn.

The Legends format removes the level-up requirement entirely. You apply the item directly from your inventory, making the process much faster.

1. Obtain a Razor Fang from the local trading post or Merit Point exchange.
2. Wait for the sky to turn completely dark. You can rest at a base camp until nightfall to force the time change.
3. Open your satchel and select the Razor Fang.
4. Apply it directly to Gligar in your party.

The evolution animation will start immediately. This method is identical to the one used in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

In the Paldea region and the Teal Mask DLC, the traditional held-item mechanic returns. You must manage the passive day/night cycle.

1. Find a Razor Fang in the Timeless Woods or purchase it from the regional Pokédex reward menu after catching 110 Kitakami Pokémon.
2. Give the Razor Fang to Gligar to hold.
3. Wait for nightfall in Paldea. The in-game day/night cycle lasts 72 real-world minutes; night lasts exactly 34 minutes.
4. Trigger a level up using a Rare Candy, an EXP Candy, or by winning a battle.

Do not use the Let's Go auto-battle feature to level up. Auto-battles block all evolution triggers.

The mobile version simplifies the time mechanic but adds a resource grind. Time of day does not matter here.

1. Gather 100 Gligar Candy by catching, transferring, or walking with Gligar as your buddy.
2. Obtain a Sinnoh Stone from PvP battles, Research Breakthroughs, or Team GO Rocket leaders.
3. Select Gligar in your Pokémon storage and tap Evolve.

Players frequently encounter roadblocks when trying to evolve Gligar. Here are the common failures and their fixes.

• Holding the wrong item: The Razor Claw does not work. Gligar specifically needs the Razor Fang.
• Wrong time of day: Evening or dusk does not count. The sky must be completely dark. Check the in-game map icon in Scarlet/Violet to confirm the moon symbol is active.
• Leveling via Auto-Battle: Defeating wild Pokémon using the R button (Let's Go mode) prevents evolution. Engage in a standard turn-based battle or use a candy.

If you plan to use Gligar in the NU tier alongside partners like Houndstone or Duraludon, do not evolve it. Its Immunity ability combined with Knock Off and hazard-setting moves makes the base form superior against threats that rely on status conditions.

Watch out for counters like Tornadus, Basculegion, and Tsareena, which easily break through an unevolved Gligar even with an Eviolite.
