Evolution Levels and EXP Mechanics
Disclaimer: Pokedex.me is an unofficial fan-site. Grookey evolves strictly through accumulated experience points. Hitting level 16 initiates the first evolution sequence, turning the starter into
Thwackey. Pushing that
Thwackey to level 35 triggers the final evolution into
Rillaboom.
Players can accelerate this leveling process using EXP Candies obtained from Tera Raid Battles in Scarlet and Violet, or Max Raid Battles in Sword and Shield. Holding a Lucky Egg boosts experience yield by 50% during wild encounters and trainer battles.
In Generation 9, using the Let's Go auto-battle feature yields reduced EXP but saves real-world time. Defeating
Chansey or
Blissey in North Province (Area Three) provides massive EXP yields for rapid leveling. No trading, friendship mechanics, or evolution stones factor into this specific evolution line.
Competitive Verdict: Is Evolving Grookey Worth It?
Once fully evolved,
Rillaboom secures a 9/10 competitive rating. It functions as a top-tier physical pivot and wallbreaker in both VGC and Singles formats. Base 125 Attack combined with Grassy Terrain turns it into an immediate offensive threat.
Its base 85 Speed sits in a crowded middle speed tier, but gaining access to priority moves bypasses this limitation entirely.
Rillaboom dictates the pace of a match through sheer offensive pressure and terrain manipulation.
Compared to other Grass-type starters like
Meowscarada or
Venusaur,
Rillaboom offers superior utility and bulk. It forces switches effortlessly, allowing players to gain momentum by predicting the opponent's defensive pivots.
Pros, Cons, and Ideal Team Fits
Evaluating the final evolution reveals clear mechanical strengths and exploitable weaknesses that dictate team composition.
- Pros: Unmatched speed control via Fake Out, priority STAB with Grassy Glide, and momentum generation through U-turn.
- Cons: Severe vulnerability to common Fire, Flying, and Ice attacks. Complete reliance on Grassy Terrain to function optimally.
Who it's for: Bulky offense and hyper-offense teams needing a reliable pivot and terrain setter.
Sneasler pairs perfectly with
Rillaboom, consuming a Grassy Seed to activate Unburden and double its Speed.
Who it's not for: Stall builds or teams heavily reliant on grounded Earthquake users. Grassy Terrain halves the damage of Earthquake, Magnitude, and Bulldoze, actively hindering teammates like
Garchomp unless they run High Horsepower instead.
The Grassy Surge Requirement
The standard Overgrow ability provides negligible value in competitive play. Viability hinges entirely on the Hidden Ability, Grassy Surge. This ability automatically sets Grassy Terrain for five turns upon
Rillaboom entering the field.
Grassy Terrain boosts Grass-type attacks by 30% and restores 1/16th of maximum HP to all grounded Pokémon at the end of each turn. This passive healing offsets hazard damage from Stealth Rock or Spikes.
Players must use an Ability Patch on their evolved starter to swap Overgrow for Grassy Surge. If breeding, a female
Rillaboom with Grassy Surge has a 60% chance to pass the Hidden Ability down to newly hatched
Grookey.
Post-Evolution Move and Item Synergies
Post-evolution move selection defines
Rillaboom's utility. Fake Out breaks Focus Sashes and stalls opposing field conditions like Tailwind or Trick Room. Grassy Glide receives a +1 priority bracket strictly while Grassy Terrain remains active on the field.
Wood Hammer serves as a nuclear wallbreaking option, heavily damaging even resistant targets despite the recoil. Knock Off removes crucial opponent items like Heavy-Duty Boots or Leftovers, punishing defensive switch-ins like
Corviknight or
Zapdos.
Choice Band maximizes Wood Hammer's damage output, guaranteeing OHKOs on neutral targets with base 100 HP and Defense. Assault Vest trades raw power for special bulk, allowing
Rillaboom to survive
Flutter Mane's Moonblast or
Gholdengo's Make It Rain. Miracle Seed offers a middle ground, boosting Grass moves by 20% without locking the user into a single attack.

Frequently Asked Questions About Evolving Grookey
Can you evolve Grookey before the first gym?
In Sword and Shield, Milo's Grass gym scales to level 20. Since Grookey evolves at level 16, players can easily enter the first gym battle with a Thwackey by defeating wild Pokémon in the Wild Area.
Does Grookey need a Leaf Stone to evolve?
No. The entire Grookey evolution line relies strictly on leveling up. Leaf Stones are reserved for Pokémon like Gloom or Exeggcute and have no effect on this Galar starter.
How do you get a Grookey with Grassy Surge?
Grookey caught or bred normally will have Overgrow. To obtain Grassy Surge, you must either breed a female Pokémon already possessing the Hidden Ability or apply an Ability Patch to your Grookey.
Can you cancel Grookey's evolution?
Yes. Pressing the 'B' button during the evolution animation prevents Grookey from becoming Thwackey. Giving Grookey an Everstone to hold also permanently blocks the evolution trigger upon leveling up.
