Honedge evolution method
The Essentials: Two-Stage Evolution Path
Evolving
Honedge requires a mix of standard leveling and item application. The process is strictly linear and does not branch based on gender or game version. You must complete the first stage before the second stage becomes available.
- Stage 1:
Honedge to
Doublade requires reaching exactly level 35. You can achieve this through standard battle experience, Rare Candies, or Exp. Candies. - Stage 2:
Doublade to
Aegislash requires a Dusk Stone. You select this evolution stone from your bag and apply it directly to
Doublade.
Once you use the Dusk Stone, the item is permanently consumed.
Aegislash represents the final stage of this evolutionary line and cannot evolve further.
In-Game Verdict: Is Evolving Honedge Worth It?
For a standard story playthrough, fully evolving
Honedge into
Aegislash yields mixed results depending on your playstyle.
Aegislash operates on the unique Stance Change ability. It enters battle in Shield Form with massive defensive stats, then swaps to Blade Form with massive offensive stats when you select an attacking move.
This mechanic makes
Aegislash incredibly resilient against NPC trainers. You can safely absorb a hit in Shield Form, strike back hard in Blade Form, and then use the move King's Shield on the next turn to revert to Shield Form. This loop trivializes many boss battles.
However, this constant form-swapping slows down basic random encounters. If you prefer fast, one-hit KO sweepers for grinding routes,
Aegislash requires too much setup. Additionally, some players prefer to halt the evolution at
Doublade. By giving
Doublade an Eviolite to hold, its physical defense skyrockets, making it a pure physical wall without the need to manage Stance Change.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A Evolution Steps
With
Honedge returning to its native Kalos setting in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the evolution mechanics follow the manual trigger system established in previous Legends titles. Pokémon do not evolve automatically at the end of battles in this format.
- Capture a
Honedge within the Lumiose City urban sectors. - Keep
Honedge in your active party to gather experience until the notification indicates it is ready to evolve at level 35. - Open your satchel, navigate to your party menu, select
Honedge, and manually confirm the evolution into
Doublade. - Obtain a Dusk Stone. These are typically acquired by exchanging Merit Points at the trading post or by finding them in space-time distortions or their Lumiose City equivalents.
- Open your satchel, select the Dusk Stone, and apply it to
Doublade to finalize the evolution into
Aegislash.
Since held items are generally absent from the Legends format, the Eviolite
Doublade strategy is not viable here. Fully evolving to
Aegislash is the optimal choice for maximum stat output.
Pokémon Sword & Shield Evolution Steps
In the Generation 8 titles, the traditional automatic evolution system applies.
Honedge is readily available in the Wild Area, particularly around the Hammerlocke Hills during foggy weather.
- Place
Honedge in your party and utilize the mandatory Exp. Share to passively level it up. - Once
Honedge hits level 35, allow the automatic evolution screen to play out without pressing the B button. - Travel to the Lake of Outrage in the Wild Area. You need the
Rotom Bike water upgrade to cross the lake. - Check behind the large stone pillars arranged in a circle. A Dusk Stone spawns here periodically. Alternatively, pay Watts to the Digging Duo in the Bridge Field for a random chance to unearth one.
- Select the Dusk Stone from the Other Items pocket in your bag and use it on
Doublade.
If you accidentally cancel the level 35 evolution by pressing B,
Honedge will attempt to evolve again every time it levels up thereafter.
Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Compatibility Status
Honedge,
Doublade, and
Aegislash are completely absent from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. They do not appear in the base Paldea Pokédex, the Teal Mask DLC, or the Indigo Disk DLC.
Furthermore, the
Honedge line is not programmed into the Generation 9 game code. You cannot transfer them into Scarlet or Violet via Pokémon HOME. Any attempt to move a
Honedge from Sword, Shield, or HOME into these games will be blocked by a red restriction icon.
Pokémon GO Evolution Mechanics
As of the current update cycles, the
Honedge line remains unreleased in Pokémon GO. When Niantic introduces this Kalos native, the evolution path will rely strictly on the Candy system rather than levels.
Based on standard three-stage evolution patterns for rare Pokémon, expect
Honedge to require 25
Honedge Candies to evolve into
Doublade. The second stage, evolving
Doublade into
Aegislash, will likely demand 100
Honedge Candies. Given the mainline requirement of a Dusk Stone, Niantic may also require a specific evolution item, such as a Unova Stone or a generic Evolution Item, alongside the 100 Candies to trigger the final stage.
Troubleshooting: Why Won't Honedge Evolve?
Players occasionally encounter roadblocks when trying to complete this evolution line. The most common issue during the first stage is an attached Everstone. If you received
Honedge through a trade and it holds this item, the level 35 evolution trigger is entirely disabled. Remove the item to proceed.
Another frequent issue involves move pools. In older generations, evolving
Doublade into
Aegislash too early meant missing out on
Doublade's level-up moves, such as Sacred Sword. Players would panic, thinking their
Aegislash was permanently stuck with a poor moveset.
Modern games resolve this via the Move Relearner. If you evolve
Doublade immediately upon acquiring a Dusk Stone, you can simply visit the Move Reminder menu in the Pokémon Center (or the party menu in recent titles) to teach
Aegislash any moves it missed. There is no longer a penalty for evolving
Doublade immediately.
Finally, ensure you are using the correct stone. A Dawn Stone, Moon Stone, or Shiny Stone will not work. The prompt will read 'Incompatible' if you attempt to use anything other than a Dusk Stone on
Doublade.

Frequently Asked Questions About Honedge Evolutions
At what level does Honedge evolve into Doublade?
Honedge evolves into Doublade exactly at level 35. You can reach this level through normal battles, using Rare Candies, or feeding it Exp. Candies. There is no other requirement for this first stage.
Can I evolve Honedge in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?
No. The entire Honedge evolution line is missing from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. They are not in the regional Pokédexes and cannot be transferred into the game via Pokémon HOME.
Where do I find the item to evolve Doublade?
Doublade requires a Dusk Stone. In Pokémon Sword and Shield, you can find a guaranteed Dusk Stone at the Lake of Outrage or by paying the Digging Duo in the Wild Area.
Why didn't my Honedge evolve at level 35?
If Honedge reached level 35 and did not evolve, it is likely holding an Everstone. Remove the Everstone from its held items slot and level it up one more time to trigger the evolution.
