How to Evolve Igglybuff

To evolve Igglybuff into Jigglypuff, you must raise its Friendship level to 160 (or 220 in games prior to Generation 8) and level it up once. You can quickly boost Friendship by giving Igglybuff a Soothe Bell, feeding it stat-boosting Vitamins, or using generation-specific features like Picnics.

Unlike stone-based or trade evolutions, Friendship evolutions require active participation or resource investment. The game does not display the exact Friendship value, forcing players to rely on specific NPCs known as Friendship Checkers to gauge their progress.

Keep Igglybuff out of a fainted state during this process. Allowing it to faint in battle drops its Friendship by 1 point (or more if the opponent is 30 levels higher), actively delaying your evolution.

The fastest way to reach the required Friendship threshold is through consumables. Feeding Igglybuff Vitamins (such as HP Up, Carbos, or Iron) yields flat Friendship increases. If Igglybuff's Friendship is below 100, each Vitamin provides +5 points.

EV-reducing berries (like Pomeg, Kelpsy, or Qualot) are even more effective. These berries grant +10 Friendship points when the stat is below 100, and +5 points when between 100 and 200. Feeding Igglybuff roughly 20 of these berries will instantly max its Friendship to the evolution threshold.

• Soothe Bell: Multiplies all Friendship gains by 1.5x. Always equip this item before starting the grind.
• Luxury Ball: If you catch a wild Igglybuff in this Poké Ball, it gains an extra +1 Friendship point for every positive event.
• Walking: You have a 50% chance to gain +1 Friendship for every 128 steps taken with Igglybuff in your active party.

Depending on which game you are playing, you have access to different interactive methods to bypass the Vitamin cost. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, setting up a Picnic and washing Igglybuff grants +3 Friendship per wash. Making sandwiches also provides significant boosts depending on the ingredients used.

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, Pokémon Camp serves a similar purpose. Playing with Igglybuff using the Poké Toy and cooking high-tier Curry (Copperajah class or Charizard class) will easily max out its Friendship in less than 15 minutes.

For players in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, taking Igglybuff to the Ribbon Syndicate in the Resort Area or visiting the massage girl in Veilstone City provides a daily, massive Friendship spike. These daily events stack with the Soothe Bell multiplier.

From a competitive standpoint, investing time into evolving Igglybuff yields terrible returns. Wigglytuff earns a harsh 3/10 rating in competitive formats. While its base 140 HP looks impressive on paper, it is completely undermined by a base 45 Defense and 50 Special Defense.

Wigglytuff attempts to function as a niche cleric or Stealth Rock setter in lower tiers (ZU or PU). However, it takes massive percentage damage from neutral hits, preventing it from reliably passing Wishes or setting up screens. Its base 45 Speed ensures it almost always takes a hit before moving.

• Pros: Massive HP pool; the Competitive ability deters Defog and Intimidate users.
• Cons: Abysmal defensive stats; severely outsped by the entire metagame; lacks reliable instant recovery outside of Wish.

Wigglytuff is strictly for Pokédex completionists. In any serious competitive environment, Clefable completely outclasses it. Clefable possesses superior defenses, the phenomenal Magic Guard or Unaware abilities, and a better defensive typing since Normal/Fairy adds a Fighting weakness to Wigglytuff.

For a standard story playthrough, the Igglybuff line fares slightly better. Evolving Jigglypuff into Wigglytuff requires a Moon Stone, which is often available early-to-mid game. Doing so gives you a fully evolved Pokémon with a massive movepool before the third Gym in most regions.

Wigglytuff can learn Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Flamethrower, and Dazzling Gleam via TM. This incredible coverage allows it to hit almost every major boss for super-effective damage. However, you must evolve Jigglypuff only after it learns the moves you want, as Wigglytuff's level-up learnset is entirely empty.
