How to Evolve Inkay

To evolve Inkay, level it up to 30 or higher while physically holding your console or mobile device upside down. On the Nintendo Switch, you must play in handheld mode with Joy-Cons attached. Docked mode and Pro Controllers disable the gyroscope detection required for this evolution.

Evolving Inkay relies on a unique hardware interaction rather than items or trading. Malamar is highly effective for standard story playthroughs.

The evolution trigger relies on the Nintendo Switch's internal gyroscope. This applies equally to upcoming titles like Pokémon Legends: Z-A and current generation games like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

1. Detach the Switch from the dock and attach both Joy-Cons to the sides of the screen.
2. Ensure Inkay is at least level 29 in your active party.
3. Trigger a level-up using an Exp. Candy, Rare Candy, or by completing a battle.
4. Physically turn the entire console upside down immediately after the experience bar fills.
5. Hold the console inverted until the evolution screen appears and Malamar is registered.

Using candies from the bag menu is the safest method. It prevents you from missing the narrow window between a battle ending and the level-up sequence starting.

The mobile version adapts the gyroscope mechanic directly to your smartphone. You do not need to walk or complete special buddy tasks.

1. Collect 50 Inkay Candy via catches, transfers, or Pinap Berries.
2. Open Inkay's summary screen in your Pokémon storage.
3. Turn your smartphone completely upside down.
4. Wait for the evolution button to turn green and display a checkmark.
5. Tap the green button while keeping the phone inverted.

If the button remains faded, your phone's auto-rotate feature might be interfering, or the gyroscope needs recalibration.

This evolution frequently fails due to hardware setups that bypass the gyroscope. Here are the most common blockers and their direct fixes.

• Playing Docked or Tabletop: The game only reads the gyroscope inside the main console screen, not your controller. Fix: Switch to pure handheld mode with Joy-Cons physically attached to the rails.
• Using a Pro Controller: Even in handheld mode, a synced Pro Controller overrides the console's motion sensors. Fix: Disconnect the Pro Controller entirely from the Switch system settings before leveling up.
• Flipping Too Late: The console must be upside down at the exact moment the level-up text box appears. Fix: Turn the console upside down before dealing the final blow in battle, or before pressing the button to confirm an Exp. Candy.
