Evolving Larvitar
The Essentials: Larvitar's Evolution Line
Evolving Larvitar follows a strictly level-based progression system. You do not need to hunt for evolution stones, trade with other players, or wait for a specific time of day.
- Base Form:
Larvitar - First Evolution:
Pupitar (Triggers upon reaching Level 30) - Final Evolution:
Tyranitar (Triggers upon reaching Level 55)
This evolutionary line belongs to the Slow experience group. Reaching level 55 requires a massive 207,968 total Experience Points. Relying solely on trainer battles during the main story will leave you stuck with a
Pupitar for a significant portion of your playthrough.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A Evolution Guide
In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Larvitar retains its standard level 30 and level 55 evolution milestones. However, the urban environment of Lumiose City changes how you accumulate the necessary Experience Points.
- Catch a wild
Larvitar in the designated urban redevelopment zones or underground sectors of Lumiose City. - Keep
Larvitar in your active party to benefit from the game's universal EXP Share system while completing City Redevelopment quests. - Feed
Larvitar EXP Candies obtained from clearing spatial rifts or defeating alpha-equivalent Pokémon roaming the city outskirts. - When
Larvitar hits level 30, navigate to your satchel, select the flashing Poké Ball icon next to
Pupitar, and manually trigger the evolution. - Repeat this manual trigger at level 55 for
Tyranitar.
Since
Tyranitar is capable of Mega Evolution, acquiring one early in Legends: Z-A is highly recommended for tackling late-game boss encounters. Secure the Tyranitarite mega stone to maximize its utility once fully evolved.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet (Paldea) Fast Leveling
In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Larvitar is a Scarlet-exclusive spawn. Violet players must trade or use the Union Circle to catch one. Reaching level 55 in Paldea is heavily streamlined through specific farming methods.
- Travel to North Province (Area Three) or the depths of Area Zero.
- Consume a sandwich granting Encounter Power: Normal Lv. 2 (using ingredients like Tofu, Rice, and Mayonnaise).
- Defeat the resulting massive spawns of
Chansey and
Blissey using physical attackers to gain thousands of EXP per battle. - Alternatively, farm 5-Star and 6-Star Tera Raid Battles across the Paldea region.
- Apply the rewarded EXP Candy L and EXP Candy XL directly to
Larvitar or
Pupitar to bypass the grinding process entirely.
Equipping a Lucky Egg on
Larvitar boosts experience yields from standard battles by 50%. You receive a Lucky Egg from Jacq at the academy after registering 50 Pokémon in your Pokédex.
Pokémon Sword and Shield (Galar) Methods
For players navigating the Galar region, Larvitar is a Shield-exclusive Pokémon. Sword players must rely on trading or Pokémon HOME transfers to obtain one.
- Search the Lake of Outrage in the Wild Area during Overcast or Intense Sun weather conditions to find wild
Larvitar. - Participate in Max Raid Battles at the Dusty Bowl or Giant's Seat dens. Defeating raid bosses rewards you with EXP Candies proportional to the raid's star difficulty.
- Feed these candies to
Larvitar to quickly bridge the gap between level 30 and level 55. - Alternatively, assign
Larvitar to Poké Jobs via the Rotomi terminal in any Pokémon Center.
Selecting the Whole Day duration for Poké Jobs yields massive experience, especially if
Larvitar holds a Lucky Egg. Using the Poké Jobs time-skip exploit allows you to evolve
Larvitar into
Tyranitar in a matter of minutes without battling.
Pokémon GO Candy Requirements
The mobile mechanics in Pokémon GO completely replace traditional leveling. Evolving Larvitar requires a specific currency tied directly to the species.
- Accumulate 25
Larvitar Candies to evolve
Larvitar into
Pupitar. - Accumulate an additional 100
Larvitar Candies to evolve
Pupitar into
Tyranitar.
To farm these candies efficiently, always use a Pinap Berry or Silver Pinap Berry before throwing your Poké Ball at a wild
Larvitar. This doubles the catch reward to 6 candies.
Set
Larvitar as your Buddy Pokémon. It requires walking 5 kilometers to generate a single candy. Hatching 12km Strange Eggs obtained from Team GO Rocket Leaders also yields a high amount of
Larvitar candies alongside a guaranteed strong IV hatch.
Once you secure a
Tyranitar, you unlock the ability to Mega Evolve it. This requires 300
Tyranitar Mega Energy for the initial evolution. You farm this energy by defeating Mega
Tyranitar in Mega Raids or completing specific Field Research tasks.
In-Game Playthrough Verdict
Despite its legendary status among casual players,
Tyranitar requires a massive time investment that barely pays off before the post-game. We rate the Larvitar line a 6/10 for standard story playthroughs.
As a bulky physical wallbreaker,
Tyranitar boasts an incredible base 134 Attack stat. Its Sand Stream ability automatically summons a sandstorm, boosting its Special Defense by 50% due to its Rock typing. This makes it an excellent pivot against special attackers.
To maximize
Tyranitar's potential during the story, teach it Dragon Dance. A single setup turn fixes its miserable Speed stat while pushing its Attack to unstoppable levels. Pair this with STAB moves like Crunch and Stone Edge, and coverage moves like Earthquake.
However, its Rock/Dark typing saddles it with seven weaknesses, including a crippling 4x weakness to Fighting-type moves. Its low base 61 Speed means it will take a hit before attacking in almost every late-game battle. It is strictly outclassed in serious competitive formats, but remains a heavy-hitting option for completing the Pokédex.
Troubleshooting: Why Isn't Larvitar Evolving?
Players frequently encounter situations where Larvitar or
Pupitar reaches the correct level but fails to evolve. These blockers are tied to specific game mechanics.
- The Let's Go Auto-Battle Trap: In Scarlet and Violet, Pokémon cannot evolve if they level up via the Let's Go auto-battle feature. You must trigger the level-up through a traditional battle, catching a Pokémon, or using an EXP item.
- The Everstone Block: Check your Pokémon's held items. If
Larvitar is holding an Everstone, the evolution sequence is forcibly disabled. Remove the item and level up once more. - Accidental B-Button Cancels: Pressing the B button during the evolution animation cancels the process. If you did this, simply level the Pokémon up one more time to re-trigger the animation.
If you received a high-level
Larvitar via trade, ensure you have enough Gym Badges. Traded Pokémon above your current obedience cap will still evolve, but they will ignore your commands in battle.

Frequently Asked Questions About Larvitar
What level does Larvitar evolve into Pupitar?
Larvitar evolves into Pupitar exactly at level 30. You do not need any evolutionary stones or items. Simply reach this level through standard battles, auto-battles, or by feeding it EXP Candies to trigger the evolution screen.
How do you evolve Pupitar into Tyranitar?
Pupitar evolves into Tyranitar upon reaching level 55. Because this is a very high level requirement, players highly recommend farming 5-Star Tera Raids or Max Raid Battles to acquire EXP Candies, bypassing the slow traditional grinding process entirely.
Why isn't my Larvitar evolving at level 30?
If your Larvitar reached level 30 but did not evolve, it likely leveled up via the Let's Go auto-battle feature in Scarlet and Violet. Pokémon cannot evolve through auto-battles. Level it up once normally in a standard battle or use a Rare Candy to fix this.
How many candies to evolve Larvitar in Pokémon GO?
You need a total of 125 Larvitar Candies to fully evolve the Pokémon in GO. It costs 25 candies to evolve Larvitar into Pupitar, and another 100 candies to evolve Pupitar into Tyranitar. Use Pinap Berries during catches to speed this up.
