Evolving Linoone
The Essentials: Form Differences
The biggest hurdle players face when trying to evolve
Linoone is misunderstanding its regional forms. Not every
Linoone has the capacity to evolve.
- Hoennian
Linoone: The classic brown-and-white Normal-type reaches its final stage when
Zigzagoon hits level 20. No further evolution exists. - Galarian
Linoone: The black-and-white Dark/Normal-type variant evolves into
Obstagoon starting at level 35, but only at night.
For in-game playthroughs,
Obstagoon serves as a bulky physical attacker with excellent utility moves. However, it lacks the raw stats and speed required for serious competitive play, making it primarily a story-mode asset rather than a meta staple.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Scarlet/Violet Status
If you are exploring the Paldea region, you cannot evolve
Linoone. The entire
Zigzagoon line is completely absent from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. You cannot catch them in the wild, nor can you transfer them via Pokémon HOME.
For the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A, mechanics will depend on which regional forms are included. If Galarian
Linoone is available, the standard time-based mechanic applies. You will need to rely on the game's dynamic day/night cycle.
Wait for the overworld sky to turn completely dark before triggering the level-up. Using a Rare Candy or an Exp. Candy during the daytime will simply result in a higher-level
Linoone with no evolution prompt.
Evolving Galarian Linoone in Pokémon GO
The mobile game streamlines the process by removing the nighttime requirement entirely. You only need to focus on resource gathering.
- Catch Galarian
Zigzagoon or
Linoone to accumulate 100
Zigzagoon Candy. - Open your Pokémon storage and select your Galarian
Linoone. - Tap the Evolve button to obtain
Obstagoon.
Using Pinap Berries during encounters with the Galarian
Zigzagoon line will drastically speed up your candy farming.
Troubleshooting: Why Won't My Linoone Evolve?
If your
Linoone is passing level 35 and nothing is happening, you are likely dealing with one of two common blockers. The most frequent mistake is form confusion. Check your Pokémon's typing on its summary screen.
If it is a pure Normal-type, you have the Hoennian form. It will never evolve, regardless of its level or the time of day. You must catch or trade for the Dark/Normal-type Galarian variant.
The second issue is the in-game clock. Evolving Galarian
Linoone requires the game engine to recognize it as nighttime. In games with real-time clocks tied to the console, this usually means leveling up after 8:00 PM. In games with dynamic cycles, you must wait visually for nightfall in the overworld before feeding it a Rare Candy.

Common Questions About Linoone's Evolution
Why isn't my Linoone evolving at level 35?
You likely have the standard Hoennian Linoone, which does not evolve. Check its colors and typing. Only the black-and-white Galarian Linoone (Dark/Normal) can evolve into Obstagoon. If you have the Galarian form, ensure it is nighttime in your game.
Can I evolve Linoone in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?
No. Neither the Zigzagoon evolutionary line nor its Galarian variants are programmed into Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. You cannot transfer them into Paldea using Pokémon HOME.
What time counts as night for Galarian Linoone's evolution?
Nighttime strictly depends on the specific game's internal clock. In Sword and Shield's Wild Area, it matches your console's real-world clock after 8:00 PM. In games with dynamic cycles, wait for the overworld sky to become completely dark.
Does standard Linoone have a Mega Evolution in Legends: Z-A?
There is currently no confirmed Mega Evolution for standard Linoone. It remains a two-stage evolutionary line capping out at its base form, making the Galarian variant the only way to reach a third stage.
