Litleo Evolution Method
The Essentials: Litleo Evolution Mechanics
Evolving
Litleo is a straightforward leveling process. Unlike many Fire-types that rely on evolutionary stones,
Litleo simply needs battle experience.
- Target Evolution:
Pyroar - Method: Level up
- Requirement: Level 35
- Item Required: None
While the evolution method is simple, players often get confused by
Pyroar's appearance.
Pyroar features extreme gender dimorphism. The male form sports a massive, fiery mane, while the female form has a long, sleek crest. Despite these visual differences, both genders evolve at exactly level 35.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A: Evolving Litleo
As a Kalos native,
Litleo returns in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The evolution trigger remains tied to level 35, but the execution follows the manual evolution mechanics established in Legends:
Arceus.
- Keep
Litleo in your active party while exploring Lumiose City. - Feed it Exp. Candies or defeat wild Pokémon until it reaches level 35.
- Open your party menu and look for the glowing Poké Ball icon next to
Litleo's name. - Select
Litleo and press the Evolve button to manually trigger the transformation into
Pyroar.
Since Legends games do not force evolutions after battle, you can leave
Litleo at level 35+ indefinitely until you are ready to evolve it.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: Evolving Litleo
Litleo is abundantly available early in the Paldea region, specifically in the East Province (Area One) and South Province. Getting it to level 35 is incredibly fast using modern resource farming.
- Catch a
Litleo and add it to your party. - Complete 3-star or 4-star Tera Raid Battles to farm Exp. Candy M and Exp. Candy L.
- Open your bag and feed the candies to
Litleo to instantly boost its level. - Once it hits level 35, allow the evolution animation to play out without pressing the B button.
If you prefer traditional grinding, keep
Litleo in the lead party slot and battle wild Pokémon in the Asado Desert or Glaseado Mountain foothills.
Pokémon GO: Evolving Litleo
In Pokémon GO, leveling up is entirely replaced by the candy system. You will need to farm specific resources to add
Pyroar to your Pokédex.
- Encounter wild
Litleo and feed them a Pinap Berry before throwing your Poké Ball to double the candy yield. - Transfer duplicate
Litleo to Professor Willow to accumulate exactly 50
Litleo Candy. - Navigate to your strongest
Litleo's summary screen. - Tap the Evolve button to spend the 50 candies and obtain
Pyroar.
Since the male and female forms register differently in the Pokédex, completionists will need to spend 100
Litleo Candy total to evolve both a male and a female variant.
Troubleshooting: Why Litleo Isn't Evolving
If your
Litleo has surpassed level 35 and remains unevolved, one of a few specific mechanics is actively blocking the process. Here is how to fix the most common issues.
- Let's Go Auto-Battles: In Scarlet and Violet, Pokémon will never evolve if they level up while using the "Let's Go" auto-battle feature. You must level up
Litleo in a standard, turn-based battle or feed it an Exp. Candy or Rare Candy to trigger the evolution. - Holding an Everstone: Check
Litleo's held item. If it is holding an Everstone, the evolution sequence is disabled. Remove the item and level up
Litleo one more time. - Wrong Form Expectations: Many players think their
Litleo didn't evolve "correctly" because it doesn't have the giant mane. If your
Pyroar has a sleek ponytail of fire, the evolution worked perfectly—you just caught a female
Litleo. Male
Litleo only have a 12.5% spawn rate.
In-Game Verdict: Is Pyroar Worth It?
For an in-game story playthrough,
Pyroar is a solid 6/10. It boasts a high base Speed (106) and a respectable Special Attack (109), allowing it to outspeed and sweep many early-to-mid game NPC trainers. Its Fire/Normal typing gives it a useful immunity to Ghost-type attacks.
However,
Pyroar falls off drastically in the late game. Its defensive bulk is terrible, meaning it rarely survives a strong super-effective hit. Furthermore, its movepool is incredibly shallow, relying almost entirely on Flamethrower and Hyper Voice, leaving it walled by Rock and Water types.
Do not bring
Pyroar into serious competitive play or high-level Tera Raids. It lacks the utility of pivot Pokémon, the breaking power of true wallbreakers, and the setup moves required to function as a late-game sweeper. Use it to clear the story gyms, then box it for stronger Fire-types like
Arcanine or
Skeledirge.

Frequently Asked Questions About Litleo
Why does my Pyroar look different than the one with the big mane?
Pyroar has distinct gender differences. The heavy-maned version is the male form, while the female form has a long, sleek crest. Male Litleo only spawn 12.5% of the time, making the maned version significantly rarer.
Can Litleo evolve through Auto-Battles in Scarlet and Violet?
No. Pokémon cannot evolve if they level up via the Let's Go auto-battle feature. You must level up Litleo in a traditional turn-based battle or use an Exp. Candy to trigger the evolution sequence.
Where is the best place to find Exp. Candies for Litleo?
In Scarlet and Violet, completing 3-star and 4-star Tera Raid Battles is the fastest method. These raids drop multiple Exp. Candy M and L items, pushing Litleo to level 35 in minutes.
Does Litleo need a Fire Stone to evolve?
Litleo does not require a Fire Stone or any other evolutionary item. It evolves naturally simply by reaching level 35 through standard gameplay.
