How to Evolve Magikarp

Magikarp evolves into Gyarados simply by reaching level 20. Since Magikarp has abysmal stats and only knows Splash initially, keep it in your active party to soak up passive experience via the modern Exp. Share, or feed it Exp. Candies obtained from raids to bypass the grinding phase entirely.

Evolving Magikarp requires patience, but the payoff is immediate. Here is the core mapping for the process.

Gyarados is a top-tier choice for story playthroughs. Its Intimidate ability immediately drops the opponent's physical attack, making it an excellent lead. You gain early access to a massive Attack stat and strong physical moves like Waterfall and Crunch.

However, it is a poor choice for serious competitive play. In the current Smogon SV meta, power creep from Paradox and Legendary Pokémon leaves Gyarados outclassed. It suffers from a glaring 4x weakness to Electric attacks and lacks the speed to sweep without multiple Dragon Dance setups.

In the Lumiose City environment of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, leveling up is streamlined. You do not need to force Magikarp into active combat.

1. Place Magikarp in your active party.
2. Complete urban quests or battle trainers in the city sectors to trigger the passive Exp. Share.
3. Alternatively, feed it Exp. Candies earned from city-based raids or research tasks.
4. Once it hits Level 20, the evolution sequence will trigger automatically.

Scarlet and Violet offer multiple shortcuts to bypass Magikarp's useless early phase. Auto-battling is the most efficient method if you lack items.

1. Catch a Magikarp in any early-game river or ocean biome.
2. Keep it in your party and use the Let's Go feature (R button) with your lead Pokémon to defeat wild spawns rapidly.
3. For instant results, open your bag and feed it Exp. Candies farmed from Tera Raids.
4. Watch the evolution screen as soon as it reaches Level 20.

The mobile game entirely abandons the level requirement. Instead, it demands a massive resource grind that requires dedicated farming.

1. Catch every Magikarp you see using a Pinap Berry to double the candy yield.
2. Set Magikarp as your Buddy Pokémon. It will find one candy for every 1km you walk.
3. Accumulate exactly 400 Magikarp Candies.
4. Open the Pokémon's profile and tap the Evolve button.

Players occasionally hit roadblocks where Magikarp passes level 20 but remains unchanged. The fixes are usually simple inventory or input adjustments.

• Holding an Everstone: Check Magikarp's summary screen. If it holds an Everstone, the evolution trigger is completely disabled. Remove the item and level it up once more.
• Pressing the B Button: Pressing 'B' during the evolution animation cancels the process. You must level up the Pokémon again and let the animation play out completely.
• Level 100 Magikarp: If you caught or traded for a Level 100 Magikarp, it cannot gain more levels. In modern games, simply feed it a Rare Candy to force the evolution sequence.
