How to Evolve Murkrow

Murkrow requires a Dusk Stone to trigger its evolution into Honchkrow. There is no level threshold, friendship requirement, or time-of-day condition attached to this process. You simply select the Dusk Stone from your bag and apply it directly to Murkrow.

This evolution method has remained consistent since Honchkrow's debut in Generation 4. Because stone evolutions are irreversible, you must commit a finite resource to complete the process. The item is consumed immediately upon use, so ensure you have the correct Murkrow selected.

Finding a Dusk Stone depends entirely on the game version you are playing. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, players can pick up a fixed Dusk Stone behind the Gym building in Montenevera. They also appear randomly as auction items in Porto Marinada.

In Sword and Shield, the Digging Duo in the Wild Area provides a repeatable, albeit RNG-dependent, source for Dusk Stones. A guaranteed stone spawns in the Lake of Outrage zone once you unlock the Rotom Bike water upgrade.

For Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl players, the earliest accessible Dusk Stone sits inside the Galactic Warehouse in Veilstone City, requiring the Storage Key. A second stone is located later in the game within Victory Road.

Evolving Murkrow is not always the optimal choice. In VGC and doubles formats, unevolved Murkrow is a premier support Pokémon. Its Hidden Ability, Prankster, grants +1 priority to all status moves.

By holding an Eviolite, Murkrow gains a 1.5x multiplier to its Defense and Special Defense, making it significantly bulkier than Honchkrow. This allows it to reliably set up Tailwind, clear stat changes with Haze, or shut down opposing supports with Taunt.
