How to Evolve Pidgey

Pidgey evolves into Pidgeotto automatically upon reaching Level 18 through battle experience, Exp. Candies, or Rare Candies. No evolutionary stones, trading, or friendship mechanics are required. In Pokémon GO, the evolution costs exactly 12 Pidgey Candies. In Legends series games, you must manually trigger the evolution from your menu once Level 18 is reached.

Evolving Pidgey is one of the most straightforward progression paths in the franchise. The evolution line operates on a standard two-stage leveling curve, requiring zero external items or complex mechanics. You simply need to accumulate enough experience points through battles or consumable items.

In-Game Verdict (Playthrough Rating: 4/10): Pidgey is a classic early-game crutch that rapidly loses its utility as you progress. While its early access to STAB Flying-type moves handles Bug and Grass-type gyms effectively, its base Attack stat of 45 (and Pidgeotto's 60) fails to secure crucial one-hit knockouts by the mid-game. Unless you have access to Mega Pidgeot, regional birds like Staraptor or Corviknight completely outclass the Pidgey line in both speed and damage output. Keep Pidgeotto for early route clearing, but plan to pivot to a stronger physical attacker before facing late-game challenges.

With the upcoming release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the evolution mechanics shift away from the traditional automatic cutscenes. Following the system established in Legends: Arceus, Pidgey will not evolve on its own immediately after a battle concludes. You must initiate the process manually, giving you total control over when the evolution occurs.

This manual system prevents accidental evolutions and removes the need for an Everstone if you prefer keeping Pidgey in its base form for specific research tasks. Here is the exact sequence to evolve Pidgey in the Legends format:

1. Battle wild Pokémon or use Exp. Candies until Pidgey reaches Level 18.
2. Open your main satchel and navigate to your current party screen.
3. Locate Pidgey's icon; a glowing yellow Poké Ball symbol will appear next to its name, indicating it is ready.
4. Select Pidgey and press the Evolve command from the drop-down menu.
5. Confirm the action to trigger the evolution sequence into Pidgeotto.

Legends: Z-A is also expected to reintroduce Mega Evolution to the Kalos region. Keep in mind that you must fully evolve Pidgeotto into Pidgeot at Level 36 and locate the Pidgeotite mega stone before you can access Mega Pidgeot in battle.

Do not waste time searching for Pidgey in the Paldea region. Pidgey, Pidgeotto, and Pidgeot are entirely absent from the base Pokémon Scarlet and Violet games. They are not included in the regional Pokédex, nor do they appear in the Teal Mask or Indigo Disk DLC expansions.

Furthermore, the Pidgey line is hard-coded out of the Generation 9 data entirely. This means you cannot transfer a Pidgey from Pokémon HOME into Scarlet or Violet. If you attempt to move one from a previous save file, the game will display a red restriction icon over the Pokémon.

Here is the optimal loop for evolving Pidgey in GO:

1. Catch every wild Pidgey you encounter using a Pinap Berry to guarantee 6 Candies per catch.
2. Transfer any Pidgey with low IVs to Professor Willow to earn 1 additional Candy per transfer.
3. Once you accumulate 50+ Pidgey and at least 600 Candies, activate a Lucky Egg from your item bag.

Do not spend Stardust powering up Pidgey before evolving it. The CP multiplier will apply naturally during the evolution, and Stardust is far too valuable to waste on a non-meta Flying-type defender.

If your Pidgey has surpassed Level 18 and remains in its base form, a specific mechanic is blocking the sequence. The game will never permanently lock you out of evolving Pidgey, but you must identify and remove the obstacle. Here are the three most common roadblocks and how to fix them.

• Holding an Everstone: If Pidgey is holding the Everstone item, the evolution sequence is hard-disabled. Open the summary screen, remove the held item, and level Pidgey up one more time (to Level 19) to trigger the evolution.
• Accidental B-Button Presses: Pressing the 'B' button on your controller while the evolution animation is playing will instantly cancel the process. The game registers this as you choosing to keep Pidgey in its current state. Simply level it up again and keep your hands off the controller during the animation.
• Daycare Leveling Quirk: In older generations (prior to Gen 8), Pokémon do not evolve while gaining levels passively inside the Pokémon Daycare or Nursery. If you withdraw a Level 25 Pidgey from the Daycare, you must level it up manually in battle or with a Rare Candy to Level 26 to force the prompt.
