Evolving Pidgey
Pidgey evolves into
Pidgeotto automatically upon reaching Level 18 through battle experience, Exp. Candies, or Rare Candies. No evolutionary stones, trading, or friendship mechanics are required. In Pokémon GO, the evolution costs exactly 12
Pidgey Candies. In Legends series games, you must manually trigger the evolution from your menu once Level 18 is reached.
The Essentials & In-Game Verdict
Evolving
Pidgey is one of the most straightforward progression paths in the franchise. The evolution line operates on a standard two-stage leveling curve, requiring zero external items or complex mechanics. You simply need to accumulate enough experience points through battles or consumable items.
- Target Stage 1:
Pidgeotto (Requires Level 18) - Target Stage 2:
Pidgeot (Requires Level 36) - Mega Evolution: Mega
Pidgeot (Requires Pidgeotite, available in select games)
In-Game Verdict (Playthrough Rating: 4/10):
Pidgey is a classic early-game crutch that rapidly loses its utility as you progress. While its early access to STAB Flying-type moves handles Bug and Grass-type gyms effectively, its base Attack stat of 45 (and
Pidgeotto's 60) fails to secure crucial one-hit knockouts by the mid-game. Unless you have access to Mega
Pidgeot, regional birds like
Staraptor or
Corviknight completely outclass the
Pidgey line in both speed and damage output. Keep
Pidgeotto for early route clearing, but plan to pivot to a stronger physical attacker before facing late-game challenges.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A Evolution Mechanics
With the upcoming release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the evolution mechanics shift away from the traditional automatic cutscenes. Following the system established in Legends:
Arceus,
Pidgey will not evolve on its own immediately after a battle concludes. You must initiate the process manually, giving you total control over when the evolution occurs.
This manual system prevents accidental evolutions and removes the need for an Everstone if you prefer keeping
Pidgey in its base form for specific research tasks. Here is the exact sequence to evolve
Pidgey in the Legends format:
- Battle wild Pokémon or use Exp. Candies until
Pidgey reaches Level 18. - Open your main satchel and navigate to your current party screen.
- Locate
Pidgey's icon; a glowing yellow Poké Ball symbol will appear next to its name, indicating it is ready. - Select
Pidgey and press the Evolve command from the drop-down menu. - Confirm the action to trigger the evolution sequence into
Pidgeotto.
Legends: Z-A is also expected to reintroduce Mega Evolution to the Kalos region. Keep in mind that you must fully evolve
Pidgeotto into
Pidgeot at Level 36 and locate the Pidgeotite mega stone before you can access Mega
Pidgeot in battle.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: Availability Check
Do not waste time searching for
Pidgey in the Paldea region.
Pidgey,
Pidgeotto, and
Pidgeot are entirely absent from the base Pokémon Scarlet and Violet games. They are not included in the regional Pokédex, nor do they appear in the Teal Mask or Indigo Disk DLC expansions.
Furthermore, the
Pidgey line is hard-coded out of the Generation 9 data entirely. This means you cannot transfer a
Pidgey from Pokémon HOME into Scarlet or Violet. If you attempt to move one from a previous save file, the game will display a red restriction icon over the Pokémon.
To use
Pidgey on the Nintendo Switch, you must play Pokémon: Let's Go,
Pikachu! /
Eevee!, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond / Shining Pearl, or wait for the release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A. In the BDSP and Let's Go environments, the standard Level 18 automatic evolution mechanic applies perfectly.
Pokémon GO: The 12 Candy Strategy
In Pokémon GO, level requirements do not exist. Instead,
Pidgey requires exactly 12
Pidgey Candies to evolve into
Pidgeotto. This exceptionally low cost ties
Pidgey with
Caterpie and
Weedle as the cheapest evolutions in the entire mobile game.
Because the candy requirement is so low,
Pidgey is widely considered one of the best Pokémon for mass XP farming. Players hoard dozens of
Pidgey and hundreds of candies, wait for a Double XP spotlight hour, and activate a Lucky Egg to double the evolution experience yield. Here is the optimal loop for evolving
Pidgey in GO:
- Catch every wild
Pidgey you encounter using a Pinap Berry to guarantee 6 Candies per catch. - Transfer any
Pidgey with low IVs to Professor Willow to earn 1 additional Candy per transfer. - Once you accumulate 50+
Pidgey and at least 600 Candies, activate a Lucky Egg from your item bag. - Search "
Pidgey" in your storage and rapidly tap Evolve on each one, ignoring the
Pidgeotto stage entirely.
Do not spend Stardust powering up
Pidgey before evolving it. The CP multiplier will apply naturally during the evolution, and Stardust is far too valuable to waste on a non-meta Flying-type defender.
Troubleshooting: Why Pidgey Won't Evolve
If your
Pidgey has surpassed Level 18 and remains in its base form, a specific mechanic is blocking the sequence. The game will never permanently lock you out of evolving
Pidgey, but you must identify and remove the obstacle. Here are the three most common roadblocks and how to fix them.
- Holding an Everstone: If
Pidgey is holding the Everstone item, the evolution sequence is hard-disabled. Open the summary screen, remove the held item, and level
Pidgey up one more time (to Level 19) to trigger the evolution. - Accidental B-Button Presses: Pressing the 'B' button on your controller while the evolution animation is playing will instantly cancel the process. The game registers this as you choosing to keep
Pidgey in its current state. Simply level it up again and keep your hands off the controller during the animation. - Daycare Leveling Quirk: In older generations (prior to Gen 8), Pokémon do not evolve while gaining levels passively inside the Pokémon Daycare or Nursery. If you withdraw a Level 25
Pidgey from the Daycare, you must level it up manually in battle or with a Rare Candy to Level 26 to force the prompt.
Optimal Early-Game Leveling Paths
Getting
Pidgey to Level 18 in traditional playthroughs requires minimal grinding if you leverage its early movepool correctly.
Pidgey learns Gust at Level 9 and Quick Attack at Level 13. These two STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) moves provide enough reliable damage to sweep early Bug Catchers and Youngsters.
Keep
Pidgey in the lead spot of your party to soak up direct experience. If you are playing a modern title with a global Exp. Share, you can safely place
Pidgey in the back of your party while your starter Pokémon handles difficult Rock or Electric-type opponents.
Pidgey will still receive 50% of the experience yield without risking a knockout.
Avoid using
Pidgey against
Geodude or
Onix in early caves.
Pidgey's Normal/Flying typing renders its primary attacks heavily resisted by Rock-types, turning what should be a quick leveling session into a massive drain on your Potions. Swap it out and let the Exp. Share do the heavy lifting in those environments.

Frequently Asked Questions
At what level does Pidgey evolve into Pidgeotto?
Pidgey evolves into Pidgeotto exactly at Level 18. You can reach this level through standard battles, using Exp. Candies, or feeding it a Rare Candy. No other conditions are required.
How do I evolve Pidgey in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?
You cannot evolve Pidgey in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. The Pidgey evolutionary line is not programmed into the Generation 9 games, including the DLCs, and cannot be transferred via Pokémon HOME.
Why didn't my Pidgey evolve at Level 18?
Your Pidgey is likely holding an Everstone, or you accidentally pressed the 'B' button during the evolution animation. Remove the Everstone, level Pidgey up to Level 19, and the evolution screen will trigger again.
How many candies does Pidgey need in Pokémon GO?
Pidgey requires only 12 Pidgey Candies to evolve into Pidgeotto in Pokémon GO. This exceptionally low cost makes it one of the best Pokémon to stockpile for mass-evolution XP farming with a Lucky Egg.
