How to Evolve Popplio

Brionne then evolves into Primarina at level 34. Neither stage requires evolution stones, high friendship, or specific time-of-day conditions. The progression is entirely linear.

Players holding an Everstone on Popplio or Brionne must remove it to trigger the evolution screen upon leveling up. If an evolution is canceled by pressing B, the Pokémon will attempt to evolve again at the next level up.

We rate the Popplio line's final form an 8.5/10 for competitive play. Primarina operates as a premier bulky special wallbreaker in standard formats. Its base 126 Special Attack allows it to punch holes in opposing teams without relying on setup moves.

The Water/Fairy dual typing grants an immunity to Dragon-type attacks and key resistances to Fighting, Dark, Bug, Ice, Water, and Fire. Players typically run Choice Specs to maximize immediate damage output or an Assault Vest to leverage its base 116 Special Defense.

Primarina excels at forcing switches against special attackers and punishing the incoming Pokémon with high-base-power STAB moves like Moonblast and Hydro Pump.

Evaluating Primarina requires understanding its exact stat distribution and movepool limitations. It is highly effective in specific team structures but crumbles if mispositioned.

• Pro: Massive Special Attack stat paired with an unresisted STAB combination hits most of the metagame for neutral or super-effective damage.
• Pro: Access to Flip Turn provides slow pivoting, allowing you to bring fragile teammates onto the field safely after Primarina absorbs a hit.
• Con: Base 60 Speed means Primarina almost always moves second outside of Trick Room, forcing it to take damage before acting.
• Con: A low base 74 Defense makes it highly susceptible to strong physical attackers. Priority moves like Rillaboom's Grassy Glide will OHKO it regardless of defensive investment.

Popplio spawns with Torrent as its standard ability, boosting Water-type damage by 50% when HP drops below one-third. While useful for clutch knockouts, competitive players heavily prefer its Hidden Ability, Liquid Voice.

Liquid Voice converts all sound-based moves into Water-type attacks. This turns Hyper Voice into a 90-Base Power Water STAB that perfectly bypasses the opponent's Substitute.

Using Liquid Voice Hyper Voice avoids the severe drawback of Primarina's signature move, Sparkling Aria, which heals the target's burn status upon impact. This synergy makes Liquid Voice the optimal choice for consistent spread damage in VGC doubles.

Primarina requires specific defensive support to function optimally and mitigate its physical frailty. Steel-types like Corviknight or Ferrothorn excel at absorbing the Poison and Grass-type attacks aimed at Primarina.

In return, Primarina easily takes the Fire and Fighting hits directed at those Steel-types. Slow pivot support from Incineroar or Landorus-Therian helps bring Primarina onto the field without taking unnecessary chip damage.

Trick Room setters completely invert Primarina's speed disadvantage. Pairing Primarina with Porygon2 or Cresselia turns it from a slow wallbreaker into a fast, sweeping threat that moves first for four turns.
