How to Evolve Rolycoly

Rolycoly evolves into Carkol upon reaching level 18. To achieve its final form, Coalossal, you must continue leveling Carkol until it reaches level 34. This is a standard experience-based progression requiring no evolution stones, trading, or specific environmental conditions across all core series games.

Evolving Rolycoly follows the most traditional mechanic in the franchise: accumulating experience points. You do not need to hunt for specific items or wait for a specific time of day.

The progression relies strictly on hitting two distinct level milestones during your playthrough. Here is the direct mapping of the evolution line:

• Level 18: Rolycoly evolves into Carkol.
• Level 34: Carkol evolves into Coalossal.

Any experience gained through trainer battles, wild encounters, or catching other Pokémon contributes to these milestones. Using items like Rare Candies or EXP Candies will also instantly trigger the evolution if the item pushes the Pokémon to or past the required level.

In modern formats like the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A and the previous Legends: Arceus, evolution is no longer an automatic sequence that interrupts your gameplay after a battle. You must initiate the process manually.

Once your Rolycoly hits level 18, the Poké Ball icon next to its name in your party menu will begin to glow. This indicates that the evolution conditions have been met.

1. Open your main Party Menu.
2. Select the glowing Rolycoly (or Carkol at level 34).
3. Choose the Evolve option from the dropdown list.
4. Confirm the action to watch the evolution animation.

This manual trigger system allows you to delay the evolution indefinitely without needing an Everstone. If you prefer to keep the Pokémon in its base form to learn specific moves earlier, simply ignore the glowing prompt until you are ready.

In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, reaching levels 18 and 34 is faster than in older generations thanks to the abundance of EXP Candies. However, the open-world mechanics introduce a specific trap that catches many players off guard.

The Let's Go feature allows your lead Pokémon to auto-battle wild encounters for quick experience. Evolutions will never trigger from an auto-battle level-up. If your Carkol hits level 34 while auto-battling, it will remain a Carkol.

To successfully evolve your Pokémon in the Paldea region, follow these steps:

1. Farm EXP Candies S and M by completing 2-star and 3-star Tera Raid Battles scattered across the map.
2. Feed the candies directly to your Rolycoly until it reaches level 17 (or level 33 for Carkol).
3. Engage in a standard, turn-based battle against a wild Pokémon and defeat it to gain the final chunk of EXP.
4. Alternatively, feed it one final Rare Candy to bypass the battle entirely and force the evolution screen.

If you accidentally surpass the level threshold during an auto-battle, do not panic. Simply level up the Pokémon one more time using a traditional battle or a candy, and the evolution sequence will activate.

In Pokémon GO, levels do not exist in the traditional sense. Instead, you must gather a specific amount of species-specific candy to progress through the evolution line.

The resource cost is standard for a three-stage evolution family. You will need a total of 125 candies to go from base form to final form.

• Rolycoly to Carkol: Costs exactly 25 Rolycoly Candies.
• Carkol to Coalossal: Costs exactly 100 Rolycoly Candies.

To expedite this process, always use a Pinap Berry or Silver Pinap Berry before throwing your Poké Ball at a wild Rolycoly. This doubles the catch reward from 3 to 6 candies.

If wild spawns are rare in your current biome, assign Rolycoly as your Buddy Pokémon. It requires exactly 3 kilometers of walking distance to generate one candy. Trading duplicate catches with a friend before transferring them to Professor Willow can also yield extra candies, especially if the traded Pokémon were caught far apart.

Players occasionally hit level 18 or 34 and find themselves stuck in the base form. This usually comes down to one of three easily fixable mechanical blocks.

First, check the Pokémon's held item. If your Rolycoly is holding an Everstone, the evolution sequence is hard-coded to fail. Remove the Everstone and level the Pokémon up one more time to fix the issue.

Second, as mentioned for Scarlet and Violet, ensure the level-up did not occur during a Let's Go auto-battle. The game suppresses the evolution screen to keep you in the open-world flow. Trigger a manual battle to resolve this.

Finally, avoid touching the B button during the evolution animation. Pressing B manually cancels the process. If you did this by accident, you must grind another level or use a Rare Candy to prompt the screen to appear again.

While Coalossal is absent from competitive Smogon SV tiers due to severe structural flaws, its value in a standard story playthrough is heavily debated. We rate it a 6/10 for in-game progression.

On the positive side, Coalossal boasts massive physical bulk. Its base Defense and HP allow it to shrug off neutral physical hits effortlessly. More importantly, it frequently carries the Flame Body ability. Having a Flame Body Pokémon in your party halves the number of steps required to hatch Eggs, making Coalossal an elite utility choice for breeders.

However, its combat drawbacks are severe. Its Rock/Fire typing leaves it with crippling 4x weaknesses to both Water and Ground—two of the most common offensive types in the franchise. Combine this with abysmal Speed, and Coalossal will almost always take a devastating hit before it can attack.

Use Coalossal as a physical wall in the early-to-mid game, but be prepared to pivot to faster, more resilient options for late-game Elite Four challenges. Keep it permanently in your box for post-game egg hatching.
