How to Evolve Sealeo

To evolve Sealeo into Walrein, you must raise it to level 44. No evolutionary stones, trading mechanics, or friendship levels are required. Once Sealeo reaches level 44 through standard battling, consuming EXP Candies, or using a Rare Candy, the evolution sequence will trigger automatically.

Evolving Sealeo relies purely on the standard experience system. You do not need to hunt for specific evolutionary items or find a trading partner.

In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, leveling mechanics follow the streamlined approach of recent titles. While navigating the urban redevelopment of Lumiose City, you will encounter various opportunities to farm experience quickly.

If you catch a lower-level Spheal and evolve it into Sealeo at level 32, you still have a 12-level grind ahead. Follow these steps to expedite the process in the Kalos region.

1. Engage in high-level alpha encounters or repeatable trainer battles within the designated urban zones.
2. Collect EXP Candies from completing side-quests and urban research tasks.
3. Feed the EXP Candies directly to Sealeo from your satchel until it reaches level 44.
4. If the game utilizes manual evolution triggers like previous Legends titles, open your party menu, select Sealeo, and press Evolve.

Always prioritize using candies on Pokémon that require high-level evolutions rather than spreading them thinly across your entire party.

Sealeo is not available in the base Paldea region. It was introduced via The Indigo Disk DLC and spawns exclusively in the Terarium's Polar Biome. This location drastically changes how you handle its evolution.

Wild Sealeo in the Polar Biome typically spawn between levels 60 and 65. Because these levels far exceed the base requirement of 44, the traditional grinding process is completely bypassed.

1. Travel to the Polar Biome in the Terarium and locate a wild Sealeo swimming in the icy waters.
2. Catch the Sealeo using a Net Ball or Dive Ball for the highest catch rate multiplier.
3. Check its level. It will likely be in the low 60s.
4. Give Sealeo exactly one Rare Candy or one EXP Candy XL to raise its level by one.
5. The evolution sequence into Walrein will trigger immediately after the level-up text.

If you do not have candies, simply place Sealeo at the front of your party and defeat a single high-level wild Pokémon in a traditional turn-based battle. Do not use the Let's Go auto-battle feature for this step.

Evolving Sealeo in Pokémon GO abandons levels entirely in favor of the candy system. You will need exactly 100 Spheal Candies to evolve Sealeo into Walrein.

Since Spheal is a common spawn during Winter events and frequently appears in rainy or snowy weather, gathering these candies is straightforward if you optimize your catches.

1. Locate wild Spheal or Sealeo on the map.
2. Feed the wild Pokémon a Pinap Berry or Silver Pinap Berry before throwing your Poké Ball.
3. Catch the Pokémon to receive double the standard candy yield (6 candies for Spheal, 10 for Sealeo).
4. Transfer any duplicate Spheal to Professor Willow for 1 extra candy per transfer.
5. Once you hit 100 candies, open Sealeo's summary page and tap Evolve.

If you are struggling to find wild spawns outside of winter events, set Sealeo as your Buddy Pokémon. You will earn 1 Spheal Candy for every 3 kilometers walked. Using Poffins will halve this distance to 1.5 kilometers per candy.

Players occasionally hit level 44 and find that Sealeo remains in its current form. This is almost always due to a specific held item or a modern game mechanic suppressing the evolution trigger.

The Let's Go Auto-Battle Block: In Scarlet & Violet, Pokémon will not evolve if they reach their required level while using the Let's Go auto-battle feature. The game intentionally disables the evolution screen to keep the overworld gameplay seamless. To fix this, simply level Sealeo up one more time using a traditional battle or an EXP Candy.

The Everstone Trap: Check Sealeo's summary screen to ensure it is not holding an Everstone. This item explicitly prevents evolution. If it was caught holding one or accidentally handed the item, remove it and level Sealeo up once more.

Accidental Button Presses: Pressing the B button during the evolution animation will cancel the process. If you accidentally skipped the evolution, you must level Sealeo up again to re-trigger the sequence.

Walrein is a massive, bulky Water/Ice type designed to absorb damage rather than deal it quickly. For a standard story playthrough, it earns a solid 7/10. Its high base HP and decent defensive stats allow it to survive hits that would easily knock out frailer teammates.

Its Ice typing provides excellent offensive STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) against late-game Dragon, Flying, and Grass types. The Thick Fat ability is highly recommended, as it halves the damage taken from Fire and Ice attacks, effectively giving Walrein crucial resistances.

However, Walrein suffers from incredibly low Speed. You must accept that it will almost always take a hit before attacking. Additionally, its defensive typing leaves it vulnerable to common Fighting, Rock, and Electric moves.

In serious competitive formats, Walrein is entirely unviable. Power creep has introduced faster, harder-hitting wallbreakers, and Walrein lacks a reliable recovery move like Slack Off or Recover. It is forced to rely on Rest, which kills its momentum. Keep Walrein strictly for your story team and casual raid battles.
