Evolution Mechanics and EXP Optimization
Servine evolves into
Serperior upon reaching level 36. Cancel the evolution by pressing B if you need
Servine to learn Leaf Blade early at level 32, though
Serperior learns it at level 38 anyway.
Leveling up quickly depends on your generation. In Black and White, grinding
Audino on Route 10 yields massive experience points. In Scarlet and Violet's Indigo Disk DLC, utilizing EXP Candies L and XL from Tera Raids is the most efficient method.
Holding a Lucky Egg increases experience yield by 50%. You do not need evolution stones, high friendship, or trading to complete this evolution line.
Competitive Verdict: 8.5/10 Setup Sweeper
Serperior earns an 8.5/10 rating in single battles. It operates exclusively as a fast setup sweeper or a SubSeed (Substitute + Leech Seed) pivot. Its viability hinges entirely on its Hidden Ability, Contrary.
Contrary reverses stat changes. When
Serperior uses Leaf Storm, a base 130 power Grass-type move that normally drops Special Attack by two stages, it instead gains a +2 Special Attack boost. This turns a heavy-hitting attack into a devastating setup tool.
Fixing Serperior's Coverage Gaps
Serperior suffers from a notoriously shallow movepool. Grass-type STAB is resisted by seven different types, making raw Leaf Storm spam ineffective against teams with healthy Steel, Fire, or Flying-types.
In Generation 9, Terastallization solves this issue. Tera Fire combined with Tera Blast OHKOs
Corviknight and
Scizor after a single Leaf Storm boost. Tera Stellar provides a one-time massive damage output while retaining Grass-type defensive resistances.
In older formats (Gen 6 and 7), Hidden Power Fire or Rock was mandatory. Without these specific coverage options,
Serperior is forced to rely on Dragon Pulse, which fails to damage Fairy-types and barely scratches bulky Steel-types like
Heatran.
Optimal EV Spread and Held Items
Maximizing Speed is non-negotiable. A Timid Nature with 252 EVs in Speed and 252 EVs in Special Attack ensures
Serperior ties or outspeeds critical threats. The remaining 4 EVs go into Defense to slightly optimize taking priority physical hits.
Held item selection dictates
Serperior's specific role on the field.
- Leftovers: Mandatory for SubSeed sets. It provides passive recovery to offset Substitute health costs.
- Life Orb: Secures OHKOs on neutral targets at +2 Special Attack, but the recoil severely limits
Serperior's longevity. - Miracle Seed: Boosts Leaf Storm damage without the Life Orb recoil, ideal for cleaning late-game.
Always pair
Serperior with entry hazard support. Stealth Rock chips down Flying and Fire-types, pushing them into Leaf Storm knockout range.
Teambuilding Synergy and Counters
Serperior fits best on Hyper Offense and Bulky Offense teams. It requires teammates that can eliminate fast priority users.
Dragonite's Extreme Speed and
Scizor's Bullet Punch will bypass
Serperior's high Speed stat and strike its mediocre defenses.
Wallbreakers like Urshifu-Rapid-Strike or
Chien-Pao make excellent partners. They dismantle the special walls that can absorb a +2 Leaf Storm. VoltTurn pivots like Rotom-Wash can safely bring
Serperior onto the field against bulky Water or Ground-types.
Avoid drafting
Serperior if your team already stacks Grass or Bug-types. Compounding weaknesses to Fire and Flying will leave your squad vulnerable to common sweepers like
Volcarona or
Roaring Moon.

Servine Evolution & Mechanics FAQ
Does Servine need a Leaf Stone to evolve?
No, Servine does not require a Leaf Stone or any other evolution item. It evolves into Serperior strictly by reaching level 36 through battle experience or EXP Candies.
How do you get a Contrary Servine?
Contrary is a Hidden Ability. You must catch a Snivy or Servine from a Tera Raid Battle in Gen 9, transfer one from older events using Pokémon HOME, or use an Ability Patch on a standard Overgrow Servine.
What level does Snivy evolve into Servine?
Snivy evolves into Servine at level 17. This is slightly later than most starter Pokémon, which typically reach their middle evolution stage at level 14 or 16.
Is Eviolite Servine viable in competitive play?
Eviolite Servine is highly outclassed. While Eviolite boosts its defenses, Servine lacks the offensive presence of Serperior and the utility movepool required to function as a dedicated wall in higher competitive tiers.
