Shelgon Evolution Method
The Essentials & Playthrough Verdict
Evolving
Shelgon requires patience but follows the simplest mechanic in the series.
- Target:
Salamence - Method: Reach Level 50
- Item Required: None
Salamence remains a top-tier choice for completing the main story in any game. Its massive Attack stat and Intimidate ability allow it to steamroll NPC trainers. However, do not bring it into serious competitive formats right now.
Salamence currently lacks the speed and defensive utility to survive the modern competitive power creep, leaving it entirely outclassed by newer Dragon-types in ranked matches.
Leveling Shelgon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the evolution threshold remains level 50. Since traditional gym grinding is replaced by urban exploration in Lumiose City, you need efficient EXP farming to reach this high requirement.
- Keep
Shelgon in your active party while completing urban development requests. - Feed
Shelgon Exp. Candies earned from alpha encounters or city district challenges. - Trigger the evolution manually from the party menu once the level 50 requirement is met.
Unlike older titles, the evolution screen does not interrupt gameplay automatically. You must select
Shelgon in your satchel to initiate the sequence.
Fast Evolution in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet
Reaching level 50 in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet takes minutes if you farm the right activities. Grinding wild Pokémon is inefficient compared to utilizing raid rewards.
- Open the Poké Portal and participate in 5-Star or 6-Star Tera Raid Battles.
- Farm Exp. Candy L and Exp. Candy XL from the raid rewards.
- Feed the candies directly to
Shelgon until it hits level 50.
If you prefer battling, equip
Shelgon with a Lucky Egg. Fight high-level
Chansey or
Blissey in Area Zero or the North Province to accelerate the process.
Evolving Shelgon in Pokémon GO
The mobile mechanics bypass levels entirely. You need a stockpile of species-specific candy to secure a
Salamence.
- Collect 100
Bagon Candy. - Select
Shelgon from your Pokémon storage and tap Evolve.
Set
Shelgon as your Buddy Pokémon to earn one candy every 5 kilometers walked. Use Pinap Berries whenever you encounter a wild
Bagon to double the catch candy payout.
Troubleshooting: Why Won't Shelgon Evolve?
Hitting level 50 does not always guarantee a
Salamence. Several mechanics can block the evolution process entirely.
- Auto-Battling (Scarlet/Violet): Pokémon cannot evolve when leveling up via the Let's Go auto-battle feature. Send
Shelgon out in a standard turn-based battle or use a candy for the final level. - Holding an Everstone: Check
Shelgon's held item. If it holds an Everstone, the evolution is suppressed. Remove the item and level up once more. - Accidental Cancellation: Pressing the B button during the evolution animation stops it. You will need to reach level 51 to trigger the screen again.

Common Questions About Shelgon's Evolution
Can you evolve Shelgon before level 50?
No. Shelgon is hardcoded to evolve at level 50. The only way to get an under-leveled Salamence is by catching one directly in specific Tera Raids or SOS battles in older games.
Does Shelgon need high friendship to evolve?
Friendship has no impact on Shelgon. The evolution relies strictly on experience points and hitting the level 50 milestone.
Where is the best place to level Shelgon in Scarlet and Violet?
Area Zero is the optimal location for traditional leveling. Equip a Lucky Egg and battle the high-level wild spawns, or stick to farming 5-Star Tera Raids for Exp. Candies.
Why didn't my Shelgon evolve at level 50?
You likely leveled up using the Let's Go auto-battle mechanic, or Shelgon is holding an Everstone. Pokémon will not evolve via auto-battles. Use a Rare Candy or fight a standard turn-based battle to trigger it.
