How to Evolve Slugma

Slugma evolves into Magcargo simply by reaching level 38. No evolutionary stones, trading, or specific times of day are required. Once Slugma hits level 38 through battle experience or Rare Candies, the evolution sequence triggers automatically in traditional mainline games.

Slugma evolves into Magcargo purely through leveling. You do not need to hunt for Fire Stones or trade with friends.

From a playthrough perspective, Magcargo serves as a niche physical wall. It gains the Rock typing upon evolution, which unfortunately saddles it with severe double weaknesses to Water and Ground attacks. Because of its abysmal base Speed, it will almost always take a hit before moving.

Keep it away from competitive play. Relegate Magcargo to early or mid-game story battles where its high Defense can effectively absorb physical Normal or Flying-type hits.

The mechanics for evolving Slugma in Lumiose City remain tied to its traditional level threshold. Use the urban environment to grind experience efficiently.

1. Keep Slugma in your active party while exploring the city sectors.
2. Engage in battles or use Exp. Candies to push Slugma's experience bar.
3. Reach Level 38 to prompt the evolution ready indicator.
4. Navigate to your party menu and manually trigger the evolution, as the Legends format requires player confirmation.

Paldea offers multiple ways to accelerate the leveling process. Auto-battling is the fastest passive method, but requires a manual finish.

1. Put Slugma in the lead party slot.
2. Press R to send Slugma out for Let's Go auto-battles against lower-level wild Pokémon.
3. Feed Slugma Exp. Candies M or L obtained from Tera Raids to close the gap.
4. Trigger a standard battle to gain the final experience points to hit Level 38.
5. Allow the animation to play without pressing B.

Mobile players bypass levels entirely. You only need to stockpile the correct candy resources.

1. Catch multiple Slugma or use Pinap Berries to double the catch candy yield.
2. Accumulate exactly 50 Slugma Candy.
3. Open Slugma's summary screen and tap the Evolve button.

If your Slugma has passed level 38 and remains unevolved, a few common mechanical blocks are likely responsible.

• Holding an Everstone: Check Slugma's held item slot. If it holds an Everstone, the evolution trigger is completely disabled. Remove the item and level up once more.
• Accidental Button Presses: Pressing B during the evolution animation cancels the process in mainline games. Wait for the next level up and keep your hands off the controller.
• Auto-Battle Cap (Scarlet/Violet): Pokémon cannot evolve directly from experience gained via the Let's Go auto-battle feature. You must gain that final level through a traditional battle or by consuming a Rare Candy.
