Spheal Evolution
The Essentials: Spheal's Evolution Line
Spheal follows a traditional three-stage evolution line based entirely on leveling up. You do not need to hunt for specific items or find trade partners.
- Stage 1:
Spheal evolves into
Sealeo at level 32. - Stage 2:
Sealeo evolves into
Walrein at level 44.
Walrein functions as a massive HP sponge during story playthroughs. Its Water/Ice typing provides excellent offensive coverage against Dragon and Ground types found late in most campaigns.
However,
Walrein suffers from low speed and common weaknesses to Electric, Grass, Fighting, and Rock attacks. Because of these defensive liabilities and a lack of reliable recovery moves,
Walrein holds no viable niche in modern competitive formats. Keep it on your team for the main story, but swap it out for specialized walls if you plan to play competitively.
Evolving Spheal in Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Arceus
Modern titles like Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Pokémon Legends:
Arceus change how evolution triggers. Reaching the required level does not force an automatic evolution screen.
- Keep
Spheal in your party and battle wild Pokémon to reach level 32. - Open your satchel and navigate to your party menu.
- Select
Spheal, whose Poké Ball icon will be glowing yellow. - Choose the Evolve option to trigger the transformation into
Sealeo.
Repeat this exact manual process when
Sealeo reaches level 44 to obtain
Walrein. Using Exp. Candies or Rare Candies from your inventory will also push
Spheal to the required thresholds instantly.
Evolving Spheal in Pokémon GO
In the mobile environment, leveling is replaced by the Candy system. You must catch multiple
Spheal or use Pinap Berries to farm enough resources.
- Collect 25
Spheal Candy to evolve
Spheal into
Sealeo. - Collect an additional 100
Spheal Candy to evolve
Sealeo into
Walrein.
Walrein previously dominated the Great League and Ultra League with the Community Day exclusive move Icicle Spear. While it has seen slight nerfs, it remains a highly disruptive pivot in PvP formats.
Troubleshooting: Why Won't Spheal Evolve?
If your
Spheal has passed level 32 and remains unevolved, a few common blockers might be interfering.
- Holding an Everstone: Check
Spheal's held item. If it holds an Everstone, the evolution sequence is disabled. Remove the item and level up once more. - Accidental B-Press: Pressing the B button during the evolution animation cancels the process. You must level up
Spheal again to re-trigger it. - Scarlet and Violet Absence:
Spheal is not programmed into the base game or DLC of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. You cannot transfer
Spheal into Paldea via Pokémon HOME, meaning you cannot evolve it in the Generation 9 ecosystem.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spheal
Can I evolve Spheal in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?
No. Spheal is completely absent from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, including the Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC. You cannot transfer it into these games using Pokémon HOME.
Does Spheal need a Water Stone to evolve?
Spheal does not require a Water Stone or any other evolutionary item. It evolves into Sealeo naturally at level 32, and then into Walrein at level 44.
How long does it take to evolve Spheal?
Reaching level 32 takes roughly 2 to 3 hours of standard gameplay if Spheal is kept in your active party. Using Exp. Candies from Tera Raids or Max Raid Battles can reduce this to seconds.
Why didn't my Spheal evolve at level 32?
Your Spheal is likely holding an Everstone, or you accidentally pressed the B button during the evolution screen. Remove the Everstone and level it up to 33 to trigger the evolution again.
