How to Evolve Staravia

Staravia evolves into Staraptor strictly by reaching Level 34. There are no special items, friendship requirements, or time-of-day conditions needed. Once Staravia hits Level 34 through battle experience, Rare Candies, or EXP Candies, the evolution sequence triggers automatically in mainline games or becomes available in the menu for Legends titles.

The upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A and the existing Pokémon Legends: Arceus utilize a manual evolution system. Leveling up your Staravia during field exploration or trainer battles will not force the evolution screen to appear automatically.

You must manually authorize the evolution from your satchel. This mechanic prevents unwanted evolutions from interrupting your gameplay flow while sneaking or catching multiple Pokémon in rapid succession.

1. Keep Staravia in your active party and gain experience by catching Pokémon, gathering resources, or battling.
2. Once Staravia reaches Level 34, a notification will appear on the left side of your screen stating the Pokémon is ready to evolve.
3. Open your main menu and navigate to your party list.
4. Highlight Staravia. The Poké Ball icon next to its name will be glowing yellow.
5. Press the X button (or select "Evolve" from the dropdown menu) to initiate the evolution into Staraptor.

If you prefer to skip the grind, feed Staravia EXP Candies obtained from defeating Alpha Pokémon. Evolution recalculates the Pokémon's base stats, making Staraptor instantly more effective in combat without needing to adjust Grit levels beforehand.

In Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, Staravia follows the traditional automatic evolution rules, but the open-world mechanics introduce a specific trap. Using the Let's Go feature for auto-battling will completely block the evolution trigger.

If Staravia hits Level 34 while fighting wild Pokémon autonomously, it will simply level up and remain a Staravia. You must trigger the final level-up through a traditional method.

1. Gain experience until Staravia is close to Level 34.
2. Engage in a traditional turn-based battle against a wild Pokémon or an NPC trainer to cross the Level 34 threshold.
3. Alternatively, open your bag and use an EXP Candy M or a Rare Candy to push Staravia to Level 34 directly from the menu.
4. Watch the evolution animation play out automatically.

To farm experience rapidly in Paldea, head to North Province (Area Three). Eat a sandwich that grants Encounter Power: Normal (such as a basic Ham Sandwich with Mayonnaise). This forces Chansey to spawn in massive numbers. Defeating a few Chansey in traditional turn-based combat will easily push Staravia past Level 34 in under ten minutes.

In Pokémon GO, levels do not exist in the traditional sense. Staravia requires a fixed amount of species-specific candy to evolve into Staraptor.

You need exactly 100 Starly Candy to complete this evolution. Since Staravia is the second stage of a three-part line, the candy cost is moderately high, requiring dedicated farming.

1. Catch every Starly and Staravia you encounter in the wild.
2. Feed a Pinap Berry or Silver Pinap Berry to the wild Pokémon before throwing your Poké Ball to double the catch candy yield (6 candies per Starly).
3. Transfer low-IV Starly to Professor Willow to earn 1 additional candy per transfer.
4. Set Staravia as your Buddy Pokémon. The Starly family requires only 1 kilometer of walking to earn a candy, making it one of the fastest buddy grinds in the game.
5. Once you accumulate 100 Starly Candy, open Staravia's profile screen and tap the "Evolve" button.

Players occasionally hit roadblocks where Staravia reaches or exceeds Level 34 but remains in its current form. This is rarely a bug and almost always tied to specific game mechanics.

• The Let's Go Mechanic (Scarlet/Violet): As mentioned, leveling up via auto-battles suppresses the evolution trigger. Feed Staravia one EXP Candy or fight one manual battle to fix this.
• Holding an Everstone: Check Staravia's held item. If it is holding an Everstone, the evolution sequence is hard-locked. Remove the item and level up the Pokémon one more time.
• Accidental Button Presses: Pressing the B button during the evolution animation cancels the process. If you did this by mistake, you must gain another level to trigger the screen again.
• Fainting in Combat: In older generations (prior to Gen 6), if Staravia levels up to 34 by gaining experience from a fainted opponent, but faints later in that exact same battle, it will not evolve. Revive it and level it up to 35.

Staraptor earns an 8.5/10 rating for story mode playthroughs. It is widely considered one of the best early-route birds in the franchise's history, offering immense immediate power the moment it evolves at Level 34.

Its primary strength lies in its ability, Intimidate. Dropping the opponent's Attack stat by one stage upon entering the field makes Staraptor an excellent pivot. It softens physical blows for your entire team, making it highly valuable during Gym Leader battles and Elite Four gauntlets.

Offensively, Staraptor operates as a fast physical wallbreaker. Access to Close Combat completely flips the script on the Rock and Ice-type Pokémon that usually threaten Flying-types. Combined with STAB Brave Bird, very few story-mode opponents can survive a single hit.

However, Staraptor is incredibly frail. Its defenses are poor, and the recoil damage from Brave Bird means it often knocks itself out during longer fights. While it dominates single-player campaigns, Staraptor holds zero viability in current serious competitive formats (Smogon SV tiers) due to intense power creep and superior alternatives like Corviknight or Dragonite.
