How to Evolve Turtwig

Turtwig evolves into Grotle by reaching level 18. No evolutionary stones, specific times of day, or trading mechanics are required. Once it hits this level through battle experience or Rare Candies, the evolution animation triggers automatically in traditional games or becomes available in the menu in Legends titles.

Evolving Turtwig relies on the most fundamental mechanic in the franchise: gaining experience. You only need to reach a specific level threshold.

Before evolving, consider its competitive value in the LC tier. Turtwig operates as a highly effective setup sweeper. Utilizing shellsmash with a whiteherb or loadeddice turns its bulletseed and earthpower into massive threats. It thrives alongside partners like Timburr and Diglett-Alola, who handle opposing Fire-type or Flying-type attackers.

In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, evolutions do not trigger automatically after battles. You must initiate the sequence manually once the requirement is met.

1. Keep Turtwig in your party to soak up passive experience, or use it actively in battles.
2. Reach level 18.
3. Open your main menu and look for the glowing Poké Ball icon next to Turtwig's name.
4. Select the Pokémon and press the prompt to evolve it into Grotle.

This manual system completely prevents accidental evolutions. You never have to worry about pressing B to cancel the animation.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet return to the traditional automatic evolution animation, but introduce a major caveat with the Let's Go feature.

1. Farm experience through standard trainer battles or wild encounters until hitting level 18.
2. Use Exp. Candies for a quick level-up if you want to skip grinding.
3. Let the post-battle screen resolve, and the evolution animation will begin automatically.

Do not use the auto-battle system for the final level-up. Evolutions are completely disabled during Let's Go mode, forcing you to level up again manually.

Players frequently encounter roadblocks when trying to trigger the evolution. The most common issue is the auto-battle lock in Scarlet and Violet. If Turtwig hits level 18 via Let's Go, simply feed it one Rare Candy or win a standard turn-based battle.

Held items also cause immediate failures. If you equipped an Everstone to maintain its LC tier viability for an eviolite defensive build, the Pokémon is hard-coded to remain in its base form. Remove the item from the summary screen to proceed.

Finally, accidental button inputs ruin the process. Pressing the B button during the evolution screen instantly cancels the transformation. You will need to trigger another level-up to try again.
